Vehicle UV PROTECTION- What the car industry does NOT tell you
You should wear sunscreen even though you are somewhat protected in the vehicle. Tinting your window can help reduce UVA rays. UVA is the wavelength associated with dermal ageing, namely breaking collagen and elastin. This leads to wrinkles, loss of skin tone and altered skin texture.
Most people, including myself do not realise the marked variation regarding the standards, or rather the absence of regulation in the motor industry regarding transmission of ultraviolet radiation. Sunscreens ideally should be applied before driving- especially if the side glass is not tinted. If you drive more than 2 hours per week and do not have window tinting, perhaps vehicle tinting can be an adjunctive measure to your skin care strategy.
I hope this video helps you understand the amount of background UV that you maybe exposed to whist sitting in traffic. I your own a convertible, your skin is well and truely F@#ked. Sorry for the profanity.
Cheers,
Dr Davin S. Lim, @cliniccutis
Brisbane, Australia.
Fantastic food for thought. Another consideration in the effort to protect our skin. Car manufacturers could be including high UVA protection off the finish line. They advertise protecting the finish on the car body but not the passengers.
I live in California and the window tints are the best investment I’ve made and it makes me happy more than it should😂😂 it’s so weird when I got to Korea and see almost every car has tinted windows but in California where there’s crazy sun a lot of the cars don’t.
Zack Zhang: Most of the tinted windows on cars in California, et al, are to reduce heat in the car and minimize damage to one’s dash, and do not include blockage of UV rays.
Llumar coating on windows. Blocks both. I have had the windshield and front side windows on my last 3 vehicles done. Great investment.
It only blocks up to 380nm. So unprotected from 381-400nm. Just FYI.
You are so great! You have a genuine passion to help people and that is reflected in the content you produce
This is great info. I burn easily. Sometimes the sun feels like it is physically burning me. Sometimes when I drive I cover my arm with a light colored towel. Thank you for this video.
OMG!You are awesome!
I wish every derm in US would spend so much time with their patients((thank you 🙏🏻
Can you please do a video on the risks of blue light rays please?
Will do in time. Davin Lim
🙏
I use Heliocare 360° Gel Oil-free SPF 50 UVA, UVB Sunscreen. It has hev melanin which can protect you from blue light and ectoin which can protect you from infrared light. Its UVB/UVA protection is more effective than most chemical sunscreens produced in the USA. The downside is that it has fragrance, but that does not bother me at all.
This is one of your best videos. Super informative in everyday language and probably the biggest ‘ah ha!’ Moment for clients when I ask them about sun exposure (I’m a Beauty Therapist). Thanks for contributing and educating us all!
It definitely rings a bell! Such a small details does impact our skin greatly! Another doctor that cares the well-being of us on UA-cam! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😄😄😄❤️❤️
Good point Dr. Lim: To ask your patients how they are exposed to the sun. Many people are misinformed and think "I wear sunscreen at the beach." - (applied once per day, and not reapplied after 60 minutes, toweling off, or when exposed to pool / sea chemicals, unfortunately) - and we have to accept that incidental sun exposure (walking to the office, taking the children to the park, as examples you mention) are the main ways we are exposed to the sun.
I have ceramic clear tint on my windshield and ceramic limo tint on the others. I didn’t burn in the California sun, nor did my car get hot at all. The dark tint is illegal, but the clear tint isn’t. It’s the best investment I have ever made.
what windshield tint brand and type do you use / recommend?
What brand , where did you go to get it done ?
All cars get hot inside no matter what tint you have. It just takes somewhat longer.
Perfect your approach !!
Congratulations, Dr. Lin !!!!
I have publicized your work here in Brazil.
I'm a gun and I admire your conduct.
This was a very good class. Perfect didactics. Flawless
Thank you and success to you !!!!!!!
Cheers, Davin
Wow!!! Thank you so much for giving clarity on this as I have always wondered if sun exposure through my car window matters. I have 72 year old eyes that need protection and I get precancerous spots on my hands and forearms in particular, that I have to deal with therefore, the UV car window protection is something I should invest in. I greatly appreciate you sharing your expertise with us. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! : )
EXplains why at 70 my left hand and arm looks 10 yrs older than my right...also I just had my first excision and lab test done on left side of face near eye where I think my glasses frame likely MAGNIFIED the sun's effect there...sorry you ..and UA-cam... were not around when I was a new USA driver...those sunny hour long am and PM commutes took their toll over the decades, who knew! The diff is there for all to see!
Great video!! I have often wondered about tint (I need mine re-done!) Thanks doc. Nobody else I watch has addressed this. I like the holistic approach you take with patients. 👍😎 If I could save up enough of my pennies, I'd fly to Australia to have you as my dermatologist!
I wondered about this! I get paranoid cus I’ve been using tretinoin
Also use this as a sunscreen "Heliocare 360° Gel Oil-free SPF 50 UVA, UVB Sunscreen." You won't regret it.
Thank you very much for the in depth information doctor! Such a good explanation is hard to find around when we're bombarded by non sense claims
I have always wondered what protection car and home window tinting provided.
Thank You 🙏
Have to laugh at myself as I've been applying sunscreen to the dashboard of my car in hopes to protect it from the sun.
🤣💋

Great video - I need to tint my motorcycle helmet! Question, say again the two tints you mentioned where a clear tint had 97_98% uva protection vs another tint having 80% protection? Thanks!
NOTE: The majority of skin damage is caused before the AGE OF 18. Put sunscreen on your children from age 6 months onward. Help them wear sunscreen daily, and use physical barriers. Use a foundation brush to apply the sunscreen to help them "paint" their skin. I help prevent UVA / UVB damage by wearing a chemical sunscreen, and a physical skin barrier in the form of a BALACAVA. A balacava is a ski mask, and neck mask combination while driving. I wear wrap around sunglasses as well.
can you link the balaclava you use? I'm interested, but don't want to look like a burglar.
no one talks about this!! i can always count on you to be in top of it 😁 if only all derms were so comprehensive!
Thank you! I live in San Francisco and always Wondered if a car tint would help. I appreciate the help.
Thank you Dr Lim! Your information is always helpful !
Thanks. My hands show evidence of UV exposure during many years of driving. The age spots on my hands are very difficult to lighten including with hydroquinone. I wish I'd used more spf on hands and face.
Great vid Davin but I miss the videos of you doing your laser work -- with the before and afters of course.
Now can you do a video and talk about sun protection clothing - the actual SPF fabric garments? I have a lot of these, mostly shirts and hoodies, but how good are they really? Lately I've been thinking that maybe I should be putting sunscreen on my arms even underneath these shirts ... am I right?
Who complains about their doctor asking thorough questions? I dream of such things! Lol.
Good video 👍
.................. to say nothing about the dangers to ones eyes too!
Can I apply retin A in the evening and then stay awake a few hours while being under artificial lights from my house (lamps, screens...)?
This is so important.. I just bought a car recently after 10 years in public transportation. I gathered every penny to have it tinted with the best materials out there. It's amazing how it feels different inside the car now.. I don't feel like I'm roasting half the time.. and I live in a hot country.. Israel. I think the amount of radiation we get from the sun in our cars is more meaningful than we think. I used a brand that is clear for the front windows, as it's illegal here to tint them. The whole thing cost me like a quarter the price of the car Lol.. it's very expensive. But worth every penny in my opinion.. I don't regret it.
what brand and type of tint did you use?
@@nishiki393 I have no idea:) I took it to a known specialist and trusted him. I think he said it's a German brand.
@@msinbalony darn, most of the tinters around me in California won't go below 70%
thanks for the reply, have a good day!
@@nishiki393 sure.. hope you find someone who'll do it.
@@msinbalony thanks, me too... and I think you got what I meant, but I should have said they won't go higher than 70% (higher = less tint, sometimes catches me out when I'm not paying enough attention)
Laminated glass can block 99% of both UVA and UVB.
If your car has acoustic front windows. It’s good 👍 otherwise, get it ceramic tinted
U r always on point! Love ur videos 😻 I’ve been watching ur acne scars video. I’ve a question for u! Is it possible that old box acne scars get deeper after CO2 fractional laser. I had 4 sessions n now they r worst than ever!
In Canada we just wear our parkas....
Great thank you Dr! Love your videos.
Thank for viewing. Davin
Thank you always Dr Lim. I always wear sunscreen in the car and just got the windows tinted :)
Reed Berger-Fleishman: Just getting your windows tinted doesn’t mean UV rays will be blocked. You have to purchase a special, more expensive product for that protection as it is not a standard feature in tinted windows.
@@jt8142 I know that thanks
What should I look for in these window tints? There are many on ebay. I have a UV allergy (runs in the family, raised bumps from sun in March in Canada) and just being in car for 35 minutes causes visible issues. Many thanks.
What happens with the cell phone light? does it hurt me too?
No, too weak
Dr Davin Lim thank you that, worried me a lot
Hello, I’m new to your channel... very informative content.... super great full... I have a question.... I don’t have cystic acne, but do have acne and rosacea.... I have tried many non comedogenic sunscreen and lotions and still breakout and itch.... which is frustrating because I have dry skin with oily t zone... any suggestions I’m newly 45 yrs so I am in the last year noticing changes/maturing skin and am not happy... in my family we live very long... my great grandma died at 113 and my great grandpa at 98... so from both sides... anyway we also age slowly and really well.... BUT we have skin cancer in our family and so for a long time have been searching for some protection and health for skin... both a great moisturizer and a great sunscreen.... I would love any suggestions
THANK YOU ~Dragonfly~
LRP Comfort is the best!!
Hi Dr Davin Lim, I generally avoid sun exposure nowadays, but when I was young, I was too exposed to it, so my arms a face are considerably darker than the rest of my body even if I have avoided sun for a good period of time now, Will picosure laser be effective to get my natural fair tone back? I'm guessing my natural tone is level 3, thank you !
I thought I was safe on my commute :(
thays why if i have to stand on public transport i stand in the middle . Or sit far away from the window .Ps i always slap sunscreen and wear a hoodie or blazer .
No one's body is safe from the dangers of the Communes
And i always slap the sunscreen and next year inveatment UV hoodiea /parka
That’s why I always cover my face from the sun if I get the window sit lol... I might look crazy but idc
Great topic.
But, how do we know if/which tint actually works? Could just be false advertising and marketing. Or, Is having a darker window enough to reduce some uv? Therefore, the benefits outweigh the risks (no tint at all)?
Possibly regulated - depends on the country
Prove it with photochromic lenses. That's why these lenses don't get dark inside the car.
When I drive and its early in the morning I wear a coolibar mask that has a protection factor.
What is the treatment of keloid resulting from acne ? injections Tramsinolone make them scar ?
I’ve been interested in tinting my side windows, at least the front two for a while so this video was very informative!
I noticed since I started driving I feel my pigmentation picked up a bit vs when I was catching buses and trains. Is it possible they have UVA protective tints on all their windows?
IG:summers.shelf
Can u review the moogoo line is it really worth it?
Is that picture of the man real or a dramatization.
Imma need to tint my car …
This is a stretch - do you know of any sunscreen formulations that would attenuate UV-A radiation but permit UV-B to pass through? I'd like to keep my skin free from photoaging, but I'd also like the benefits of endogenous vitamin D production via UV-B exposure :^)
What has happened to dr Davin’s teeth ???? He looks so different !!!
I tested this with a UV camera - amyvancheese on Instagram!
Amy van Bree I’m going to have to check that out!
