  • Black-tailed Godwits are migratory marvels, embarking on journeys from as far as Iceland, Europe, Siberia, and parts of central Asia to winter in the Indian Subcontinent, Australia, West Africa, and parts of Western Europe. In this footage, observe their gregarious nature as they engage in foraging for food.
These medium-sized waders are known for their long, slightly uptilted bills, with a distinctive pink base. During breeding plumage, their heads and breasts sport a bright rusty hue, contrasting with the dark barring on the belly. In nonbreeding plumage, they exhibit a more subdued grayish appearance, distinguishing them from their Bar-tailed Godwit counterparts.
One of the most striking features of the Black-tailed Godwit is its long beak and legs, accentuated by black and white stripes on their wings. As you watch them in flight, the bold white wing stripe, white rump, and the characteristic black tail that sets them apart.
Fascinatingly, female Black-tailed Godwits are larger and heavier than males, sporting noticeably longer beaks. This unique characteristic aids in reducing competition between the sexes for food resources, showcasing the intricacies of their evolutionary adaptations
