I find Terry's character to be one of the more interesting in this series. At the start of the series she's a loving mother trying to keep her extremely dysfunctional family together and there isn't really much to her character. But once she leaves it and the shackles of having to look after her family and care about Jessie are gone she lets out her wild side with the month or so of going out dancing and drinking and lets out her greedy side after years and years of having to only care about others, especially Jessie. Her coming back with the shorter hair and new clothes is a little show don't tell for the audience. Showing she's not the same person she was at the start of the series anymore.
Then she comes back around by SAVE YOURSELF!

That was Jesse’s whole point when creating her character, he wanted her to no longer be the same mother that he once knew, she changes just like Jesse does throughout the series. The physical changes are a way to show the character changing.

This part of the series really helped me a lot Bro! My parents separated and divorced when I was six. My sister was only a year old. She barely knew what a family was supposed to feel like. I did, I had bad separation anxiety during the time. We were evicted from our apartment. My sis and I lived with my Aunt, Uncle and three cousins for awhile. I'm 22 going on 23 and it still kills me inside everyday that they divorced. I'd give anything in this world to have those days back...
