My fav scene was the restaurant one:
Mr. Kim goes to a restaurant on his way to Seoul and orders noodles.
Hears a chit chat among the restaurant folks.
Reads whats on the news paper and finds it all untrue and a flash of guilt sparks in his heart.
He still wishes to go back, tries to sing a song out loud but as he was about to reach an intersection the human inside him awakens. He starts crying, questioning his existence, purpose, contemplates the action, cries more, and picks a side.
What a heroic, majestic, giant portrayal of a human experience.
Elegant, beautiful, poetic, crafted to the core. Phenomenal acting. Extraordinary scene. It will remain with me.

The fact that this is a true story makes me cry, us citizens who weren't even in Gwangju thought the ones who were suffering was the soldiers because of a lie that has been spread "student protesters became violent about the situation and started to kill soldiers"
Even when the people were having a hard time there in Gwangju they still helped each other, taxi drivers helped the ones who's injured even if it means that they'll get killed by soldiers if they are seen taking the injured people to the hospital, doctors tried to save the people who were shot and harmed.
If Mr. Kim, Hinzpeter, the taxi drivers, and the reporters weren't there...people wouldn't have known the truth about what's happening in Gwangju. It's sad that Hinzpeter wants to see Mr. Kim again but they never got the chance as Mr. Kim died before the reporter, Hinzpeter.

A *bloody massacre* committed by the *People's "Liberation" Army* in a square in front of the palatial gates named Tiananmen, which means *"Gates of Heavenly Peace."* What irony, isn't it? Either they should rename their army to the People's Massacre Army, or keep the name but put a disclaimer that they really mean *"liberation" from life.* Life, that is, under an authoritarian fascist dictatorship who always defends its politics by labelling all critcism as "slander from foreigners that want to enslave China." As if they haven't already enslaved the Chinese people both in mind and body, deliberately shackling them with ignorance, bigotry, and ultranationalism.

It is May 18 in Korea again and once again lets never forget what happened!! Gwangju students and citizens are are true heros !! It is a horrifying idea that in 1980s this happened. But through teamwork and outstanding perseverance / bravery they all fought for their democracy.

For those who watched this movie and wonders why the Sergeant Kim lets them go after learning their true identity, I hope I can explain to you.
So, this movie was based on the actual true story, when Sergeant Kim looks onto the trunk and finds the license plate, he lets them go in hope for them to end the dictatorship. And this really did happened, according to the actual reporter who was featured by Thomas Kretschmann onto this film.
