  • Did you learn to regulate your emotions as a child? Broadcaster turned child therapist Kate Silverton says our ability to regulate our emotions has been found to be the best indicator of future happiness.
In this chat with Fearne, Kate definitively explains why it’s never too late to change your relationship with your kids regardless of how much you think you’ve already messed up.
Kate talks through why it’s not about changing our children, it’s about changing their environment. Similarly, it’s not that you’re bad at parenting, it’s that you’re being expected to parent while under often more stress and with less community support.
Fearne and Kate also chat about why all of these conversations are relevant even if you’re not a parent, because all these things - soothing anxiety, acknowledging emotions, cultivating resilience - also relate to our relationships with our own parents, and ourselves...
Plus, Kate gives her take on how best to help children with neurodiversity, and how screens are really affecting our brains.
Kate’s book, There’s Still No Such Thing As Naughty, is out on the March 28th.

Thank you so so much. As a retired NHS Lead Therapist who worked many years in the system, with also personal experience....I so agree with you wholeheartedly. So often diagnoses or labels are used to get resources for teachers. (Not of their fault, but how the system works). They are not helpful to a child who requires their 'needs' to be met & not given a label. It's about meeting NEEDS. Plus, I have met many children & young adults who are struggling to regulate due to immature Sensory Processing which needs to be developed & can be developed The impact of therapy, done right can be profound and I speak from experience. So, so hope that your work can have a massive impact on a system that needs massive updating. THANKYOU for raising this.

Problem is there is no support.
Even when you have a “label” you still don’t get support and understanding

Also as an adult with sensory issues no amount of therapy has helped this.

@@thatgirl81111 that saddens me as my son reaped huge benefits & as a retired therapist trained in SI we had many positive outcomes. I wish you only the best for your future.

The labels are for you to approach differently not yo label anyone...bit bad attitudes don't get boxes as such because your the people so self assured you sit with part perceptive judgement. Is anyone actually PhD or life long experienced with studies? Me
6 Yr study Inc. Forensic psychology diagnosed adult with life of questioning ... recommended adhd, nervous system us the answer for adhd & environment bit again
Adhd is NOT NEURO DIVERGANCE never has been your using it to undermine genuine cases and that bitter temperament from the start. You don't get cancelled we're grown ups I won't slam the foor either but I will speak.

Brilliant interview! ADHD is a DSM5 money grabber for the Big P. Finally. A researcher who cares about what is happening for the child! ❤

      Absolutely Caroline.
Also where I live, it's a monetary diagnosis for parents, aswell as the drug companies and schools teaching.

      Yes I’m intrigued.
Adults who are late diagnosed have struggled most of their lives.

Unless Kate is a psychiatrist then she shouldn’t be questioning ADHD diagnosis.. it is massively under diagnosed , and Gabor Mate’s ideas around adhd being caused by trauma .. this woman isn’t qualified and this is misinformation.
