MILAN - Basilica of Santa Maria della Passione

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Passione is one of the most beautiful monuments of the late Renaissance in Milan. The first part to be built, in 1486, was the terminal one, consisting of an octagonal lantern to which eight chapels were connected, alternatively with a semicircular or rectangular plan. From 1573, at the request of Carlo Borromeo, the building was transformed into a longitudinal layout, more suitable for preaching. Thus the naves were added, by Martino Bassi and the Baroque facade (17th century). The monumental complex of the grandstand, culminating in the dome covered by an octagonal drum, is attributed to Giovanni Battagio from Lodi. Just like the tribune of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which was built in the same years by Bramante to place the funerary monuments of Ludovico il Moro and Beatrice d'Este under the dome, the tribune of the Passion also initially had a funerary purpose, as the mausoleum of the brothers Daniele and Francesco Birago was originally located in the middle of the grandstand, today transferred to a side chapel. Daniele Birago, Sforza ducal councilor and archbishop of Mytilene, was the main financier of the first phase of the basilica's work. The main altar of the left transept houses the Last Supper, a masterpiece of Gaudenzio Ferrari's maturity, the most famous work kept in the basilica. The main altar in the apse was rebuilt in the seventeenth century, when the altarpiece with the deposition today in the right transept was moved. It is a Baroque work, consisting of a frontal decorated with semi-precious stones and polychrome marble, surmounted by a small temple decorated with onyx medallions painted by Cerano and Giulio Cesare Procaccini.

Brilliant Massimo! Back to the land of real BEAUTY... There must be quite a lot of fascinating basilicas and churches in Milan... I've never visited there, but fancy Pope Francis denying the largest diocese in Italy a Cardinal's hat!!
