  • The streets of Bangkok have become the site of some of the biggest anti-government protests in years, with tens of thousands of protesters massing to demand an end to military-backed rule and a shift to a true democracy.
It’s the latest round of pro-democracy protests since the military seized control in a 2014 coup, but this time is different-the protesters are young, their movement is popular, and they’re not afraid to cross some of the country’s most taboo topics-criticizing the monarchy directly.
VICE News went inside the protest movement to meet those leading the charge, and risking up to 15 years in jail in the process.

@@TheCookiePredator I live in the US. The left is far more totalitarian than the right in my personal experience. The ideas they espouse censor all thought or even words that contradict a chosen narrative. They regulate speech, thought and action. If you say or do anything that goes against a narrative, even if you're asking for clarification, this will be taken as a sign of disobedience and you must be punished until you change your ways. They have established this mindset on college campuses throughout the country. People who hint at conservative viewpoints - even if they mostly align with the left - are ostracized. It stems from post-modernist thinking and their solution is a Marxist paradigm that is to be implemented. These beliefs have manifested in identity politics and the forced resignation of ideological opponents in positions of power in universities. Professors and deans are forced to resign and schools are threatened into changes in policy that are more "tolerant." But this is the thing, everything the left fights for in modern times, in action they will commit the things they say they are against. The most extreme version of this is Antifa. It's actually hilarious how ironically fascist it is. In every stratum of society that the left acts in mirrors the way people acted during communist revolutions. I don't think you're taking their ideology seriously enough.

The king flew back to Thailand for the Buddhist ceremony at the early of Pandemic before flew back to German when the infection rate was more worse than Thailand, He got diplomatic passport he also got own jet plan so he can fly to wherever he want at anytime but he still stay in one of the most infected country in the world ( at that time or even now it not any better) with his son who study there while it’d been zero cases of covid19 in Thailand for more than 3 month and zero death for more than 5 months the latest one just got sick abroad he got cured but back to pass away in Thailand, we also count him as the local dead by covid19, in most of the countries especially in Europe and America they lost count already. For the country with 65 million population, Thailand have only 59 dead so far, most of them got it from abroad so if your brain still well function let me tell you like this the King able to buy thousand of ventilators during the time that most of the countries need money alone cant buy such thing but he can, those be donated to hospitals throughout the country by his order, the company that he hold the share are also the company that provided most of the medical equipments to hospital and did the most charity in the country I dont know where do you come from but im so sorry for your parent to have a kid like you I you better show your stupidity here with you fake identity because in real life you are worthless.

@Crestfire You don't know anything about history. The US and UK literally fought against North Korea in the 1950s. North and South Korea never signed a peace treaty so they are both technically still at war. So what you said is a flat out lie. The US has maintained a strong alliance with South Korea in case they go to war, but that has the potential to spark a global conflict because of North Korea's ties to China. I think everyone hopes it ends peacefully.
@tariq The US fought in proxy wars with the Soviet Union all over the world because of the belief in DEMOCRATIC capitalism over communism and socialism. The US fought in Vietnam with the south against the communist government in the north. The US fought in Somalia in the 90s for democracy. Even in Iraq, they got rid of Saddam Hussein, who was the absolute worst leader in the entire world in his time. He was an authoritarian dictator who killed 250,000 of his own people in a fascistic way. He made families clap while watching their relatives executed, that's what it was like. Hussein invaded Kuwait under bogus charges too! So by your logic Iraq has had bad leadership and you should be glad he's gone! Kuwait would not exist if not for the west. The US fought the Taliban in Afghanistan too. Is there oil in Afghanistan? The US fought in Kosovo and stopped a genocide of Muslims in Europe. Was there oil there? And no one cares! They just say the west is evil bla bla bla.
Interfering at this stage in Thailand would not be taken lightly by world leaders, it would be interpreted as interfering in domestic policy of a sovereign country. Thailand is not in civil war or destabilized to the point where it needs help from outside powers. If it ever got to that point the US would intervene. And don't forget not all Thais want changes either.
If any other country was the world's superpower things would be much worse than the paradigm we're dealing with now. And I don't think the US is perfect either. But it's way better than what your country would do for the world.

absolutely love thailand, love the language, love the people, and love the food. i stayed in bangkok for a year when i was 23, 7 years ago, and it was such an amazing place. i got lost really often though, even just exploring nearby places on foot. the only time i really got to explore the whole city was when i had my thai friend with me who was born in america but raised speaking thai, and he had been to visit many times before. i absolutely loved it so so much. but even back then, 2013-2014 i think, there were still protests i saw in a lot of places. i was always warned not to go near them though, because if i got caught, i may spend a decade or more in thai prison, which is absolutely not something i wanted anything to do with. i may visit again one day, so i won't say anything controversial with this account under my own name. but i really truly did love it there, so so so much. i just had a few rules to follow, like never put your foot on a coin or paper currency, because it has the thai monarch's name on it. and certain other rules like that. but overall, those rules were relatively easy to follow if i just stayed mindful, and respectful of a different culture accepting me into their city.
i hope everyone stays safe, and this can all be resolved peacefully. that's the most i'm comfortable saying.

I wish the protesters are more clear of their objective(s) and strategy. They want PM to resign, but what if the PM is voted in by the parliament again? Some ask for parliament to be dissolved, but the new election will still use the same constitution that they despite so badly. They are asking for a new constitution to be written, but who is going to write it? The current parliament or a different committee? And what about the executive branch during the rewritten of the new constitution? Who is going to rule now that appointed PM is not being supported?
I personally do not wish for PM to resign, for he was voted in democratically by using the rule of the new constitution approved by the people. However, if the protesters are unhappy with the new rule, I call that they try to appeal democratically through the parliament, and set a timeline that the new rule will be implemented for the next election in 3 years. That is the only how to hold the system alive, or else we will be stuck in this cycle of mob politic forever.

The main issue is that Thailand King have too much power in the Coup constitution and constantly interfere with the politics. Controlling almost everything in Thailand's independent power with Thai Royal Army by his side from Germany which is currently his residence. There is a lot more to say. However, the most important thing is that the world needs to know what is going on in Thailand. If anybody have a question, I would be more than happy to answer and hope you will spread the word. It makes me so sad to see this happen in Thailand. I live in a neighbouring country, and i was born in Thailand, so i hold the country somewhat close to my heart.
I'm rooting for you all. Good luck, and stay strong. ❤

So we can conclude that Democracy is not the best. And the process of getting one is the worst. It's a worldwide phenomena. Peaceful protests, turned angry, military/ police intervention, arrests, deaths, more protests. Countries throwing sanctions at the government for human rights violation, the economy collapsing, and sometimes a military coup, its messed up. Its good that people are raising their voice against everything wrong, but seeing what happened in dozens of other countries worldwide, there should honestly be a better and more effective way. Good luck Thailand! Protect your beautiful country.

I hope the situation in Thailand gets better. Every person deserves hope and a chance to live a life of true happiness.

Hi, I come from the United States. Our constitution was based on leaving a monarchy too but we have major flaws.
While living in the monarchy, a few rich white guys like Hamilton wrote the constitution, the Federalist papers, and so on. That's what carried us into a new government.
Haha I bet game designers would make great elected officials.
