the difference is, that this is the words of the real Almighty god - Allah as revealed to mankind. It is the way we are to worship and praise the true and only lord of the worlds. These are not words made up by mankind, that is why it touches the heart and moves people more than any choir singing any hymn written by a human. May the true Lord guide us all to his path of enlightement and truth.
People who come late should follow the imaam on whichever raka'ah he's performing and they should continue on and finish the rest of the rakaah. That's recommeded. It's in the Sahih Hadith.
