I worked for a school district's afterschool program for several years. Compared to the way I was raised, I found many of the kids to be undisciplined and disrespectful. I suspected that their behavior was encouraged by a lack of adequate guidance. I did the best I could, but there were a lot of policies by which I was constrained. When I interviewed for the position, I was told that the concept of punishment was frowned upon. I soon learned that they didn't even believe in consequences. Based on my upbringing, I knew that the parents were a big part of the problem. Some of the things the kids were getting away with would have happened only once in my household. The father is a bully, and he is raising his child to be the same. There is no reason a kid that large should be pushing anyone, let alone a girl. I'm guessing that this isn't this kid's first incident, but it's probably the first time he has seen anyone suffer consequences for their bad acts. It warmed the cockles of my heart to see those parents get arrested.

Parents are very different now. When I was in school, if your parents had to come up to the school because you acted up, it was a wrap for you. Discipline was delt out right then and there and you became the best behaved child in that teacher's class.

Sadly, the child's actions are a direct response to his home environment. This family and the home live needs deep investigation. Father is a bullying brut. Both parents deserve prison time. The child may need a GAL. He deserves a loving, balanced home, obviously something he doesn't have.
