Timely video Doc! Been having an idling issue after warming up my 94 FXR Super Glide the past month. Bike starts, runs, acceleeates great. Idle doesn't come down (the past month). It's almost as if the choke cable is always engaged. Thanks for helping us with diagnosing issues. All my best
My VOES test is quicker. I just use a long needle nose plier, reach under the tank and pinch the vacuum line. Start the bike and let the idle stabilize, then release the pliers. The idle speed should jump up and smooth out. If not, further diagnostics is needed. Note on adjusting the VOES, always hold your thumb over or otherwise seal the end of the tower when testing the setpoint between adjustments.
Hi 👋, Great info, this why I am staying with older bikes, the info is out there for people to repair there own bike, when the lights go out on your new bike they are out,
Well, I found out on my Sportster. I was VOES. If in doubt, change it out. Mine didn't hold vacuum, and the bike ran like crap, everywhere but idle. Now it runs fine.
I had the same problem but with a 85 virago 1000 some one changed it to one carb I finely unhook the vacuum from the boost box what it was called it ran great I had the bike for 9 years I got 09 sportster 1200c now liked to found a video like this one back then would got me to thinking lol
Wonderful video. I think my voes is damaged . I have a 1998 sportster with 50.000 miles. The idle was good and in random mode it goes down of 100/200 rpm and when I open the gas the motorcycle was turn off. I have only a vacuum pump for 30" Hg, but I try to check however . Thank tou
@@pedlpower The force behind 90% of “better” machines has come from the race track and the competition between Mfrs to give the buyer what they want. So we’ll have to disagree.
I have a carbureted 2001 Indian Scout with an S&S motor (Harley clone). When I start it, the bike does not idle. It races instead. I don’t think it’s an air leak. Could it be the VOES?
The epa (while it has done good things) needs to be reigned in. I wouldn’t wholesale say they are bad. But they are constantly making it harder and harder. Why do they have “noise” emissions? How does that affect co2 production? How does that make an engine burn cleaner?
@@raybrensike42just think of the death toll of riders because “I didn’t see them”. Until people start paying better attention I’ll have a loud bike. Right next to them…I can see what they are watching on their phones. So until people drive safer…they can deal with the obnoxious motorcycles.
I have a 2015 road king with an idle issue, at 1st start up idles great , after it heats up it sounds like it has a cam like it's going to stall, plenty of power but idles very rough
Hey Doc, I'm new to your page and having the exact issue with the VOES. You said on the video, to find out if the VOES is causing the rough idle is take it off and start the bike. I did take off the VOES, but it wouldn't start. I covered the inlet brass nipple on the carb where the VOES is connected, but still won't start. Can you give me an idea, if i am missing a step or just my voes is going bad. Last thing, will the bike starts even without the VOES? Thanks in advance!
Silly question but is your bike a late model where the fuel valve vacuum hose is joined with the VOES hose? This would explain your no start cause no fuel….Doc
Just got a S&S super e carburetor and didn’t know if my bike was missing the VOES. Now I know to just leave the rubber cap on for the VOES on the super e alone. Thank you
Hi Doc, thanks for the intresting Video! Some years ago i bought a used 1997 Fatboy Evo and i dont have that thing on it. Do i get it right and my bike should have it or only sportster engines? Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany
Hey doc I have a 98 fxstc it feels like the drive train has alot of play in it when I'm riding I don't feel it when I'm accelerating or deaccelerating just when I'm maintaining my speed the compensator seems to be ok I haven't taken the primary cover off yet do u have any advice before I dive in
I don’t know your mileage so check the visual stuff. Belt, pulley mounting bolts, condition of sprocket teeth and transmission fluid level. Then go into the primary for inspection….Doc
I’ve been meaning to adjust my VOES after lighting heads and screaming eagle cams on my sportster. How do you figure to go to a lower or higher number? Thanks
It all depends on your right wrist. It is always an experiment. Get bike up to temperature. Fill with silicone. Adjust for the best idle. Sometimes you can fill with silicone. After turning the screw. Test ride and adjust before silicone hardens.
The amount of control required for an ICE to operate according to EPA guidelines is astounding. What if a switch was made to synthetic fuel? No need then for all the controls cause that fuel not carbon based. Make sense?
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson yes, it may be. In my biz (HVAC) we no longer have HFC or CFC refrigerants. Still have AC equipment however new refrigerants are beyond EPA recovery guidelines.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Hi Doc, thanks for the quick response! I asked simply because with the Ultima ignition module you can get timing without the VOES. That is, with VOES off.
