  • Batteries love a warm day so it’s the perfect opportunity to test the Renault Megane E-tech’s rapid charging speed. I’d read it can charge from 10-80% in just 30 minutes, but can it really?
    If you want to see the whole exciting action from 10-80% on the charger screen, sped up to 2000% and set to a sexy synth soundtrack, here it is: • Charging speed test: 1...

    We own a megane too since april and i can definitively say that while it isn't a longlong journey car, it is definitely the perfect daily commuter. Yes charging curve is not so great, but i suspect it was done like that to preserve battery life instead of preferring charging speeds, though you can definitely do long journey with a little more trade off time compared to some pricier cars.
    on the other hand, commuting is where it shines, with spring and summer time temperatures you can definitely go down to 12-13 kwh/100km (5.17-4.77 mi/kwh) driving with speeds under 70km/h and with a heat pump version, that's the real deal of efficiency for me and what electric cars should be about!

    I got my Polestar P2 last Wednesday and I live on a terrace street with no access to at home charging. As a baptism of fire, I’ve already driven from north Northants to Cardiff and back. So far, public charging has been an absolute dream. Especially Ionity. Granted my sample size is only 1 week however I average 80 miles per day. I absolutely love it.

      We are in a similar position with living in Victorian terracing and owning an ID.3. I can charge on economy 7 if I sit out with the car so I have got myself up a couple of times at 4a.m. for 3 hours of cheap juice.
      We also have some BP Pulse kerbside chargers in the middle of Rugby where we can leave the car all day on a Sunday if we wanted to charging at 30 pence / kWh. Not a bad price really.

    The main take home message here is that in 30 minutes, you’ve added 156 miles of range (with your 3.8 miles/kWh efficiency figure), and therefore about 2 hours 10 min of driving at 70mph. So largely enough for most people.😊

    Nice video Andrew. We started with a 100 mile Zoe, nice little car to drive. We still like our 4 year old Kona, easy driving at 5.1 and 310m at the moment. It has had a new main batt about a year ago. After 5 years I think I would still go for the new 2024 Kona, bit bigger which solves its problems. Saw Robert at Harrogate when he cut the ribbon. I said I had always wanted to meet a rich and important celebrity. He said we can try and find you one but you were not there ! We originally from Kent, now Suffolk and charge at that Ionity place when visiting family at Rhodes Minnis. Drove the EV6 AWD at Harrogate, now that is a car ! Alan

Also I believe your car has voice control, which we use for everything and never have to touch the screen, as it is so good. I chose the Megane over the Nero ev because of the towing capability and charging speeds.

Thankfully we have a 7KW charger at home and with Octopus, charging after 11:30pm has been a god send as it is so cheap and we just top it up to 80% when it gets down to about 40%. Super easy car to drive and it with Google integration it is just great. Still a lot to learn! I tested the Megane at launch and can say it was a great drive. But I was struggling a little for space and kept knocking my head on the roofline getting in and out (problem with being very tall). Whilst 220miles in 30+mins is totally adequate for many , over the coming years this will just get better with newer cars. For certain I am never going back to Petrol or Diesel.

    Re Kia Niro efficiency. My commonest journeys are round trips in East Sussex, both from 170m to 30m altitude. One 22 miles round trip the other 35 miles. Obviously dramatic difference in efficiency downhill away to uphill home but average on both is currently 4.5m/kWh in normal driving with varying regen, air cooled seats and about 1/3 time with air con on. The GOM showing average 280-290 miles at 100%. Octopus Go recently dropped off peak to 9.5p/kWh so most of our driving is costing 2.1p/mile.

    Problem with Onto is that the incuded charging encourages drivers to charge exclusively on public charging and they then block the chargers at peak periods trying to get to 100% no matter how long the queue.

    • @MrEV

      That's definitely an issue. Onto now offer subscriptions without charging included so hopefully that stops the charger hogging a little.

    How does that car NOT have a "heat pump" but DOES have air conditioning?
    Air conditioning IS a heat pump. To get a heat pump, you literally just run the coolant in the other direction, no?
    Am I missing something? This whole "charge £1k for a heat pump" thing seems like a complete rip off.

      @@MrEV I'm now thinking that the AC needs to always be available to cool the battery to prevent damage and the humans just get the excess when they request cooling.
      So maybe it does need to have AC to always be available, even if the cabin needs to be warmed.
      This is the only thing that makes sense to me as obviously the AC can't produce hot and cold at the same time. Hence the need for a separate system.
      I wonder if there is a opportunity to tap into excess heat from the battery. Unsure if current EVs do this (I'm still on a ICE car at the moment)

    Not sure an EV is a particularly good investment at the moment, what with the continuing expensive public charging, the huge depreciation on EV's over the past 6 months, limited charging network, time added to journeys when you need to charge and worse, very few charging points have any weather protection. I switched from an EV to a Honda Jazz ehev, late last year and regularly see 60-100mpg and don't feel I have any of the EV negatives. Maybe time for a test to experience an alternative option and report on the difference.

    • @MrEV

      It'd be interesting, but I just don't enjoy driving ICE cars as much. I can see how the EV experience right now can be a struggle for some people but for me, charging at home 95% of the time and rarely having issues public charging, I'm happy to put up with any occasional problems while infrastructure catches up.
      Anyone buying a used EV right now can get a really good deal but I agree the depreciation on new ones is bad now - although probably about the same as it's always been for ICE?

  • @bimlico
    @bimlico Рік тому

    Omg, the hassle of owning an EV. You have 2 chargers at home, neither of which work properly. You seem to have to download dozens of apps, to accommodate different chargers. Most of which seem to be out of order at regular intervals. And it takes ages to recharge a car. Oh and it's better to have a warm battery than cold. Ffs. I have a very efficient 520d. I don't have to do any of the above. The car does over 50mpg and has a range of over 1,100 kms. I've never seen a garage where ALL the pumps are broken, and I can refill my car in 2 mins. EVs - no thank you.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  Рік тому

      The home charging issue is just with the Megane; not any other EV I've had. And waking up to a charged car (for 2p per mile) easily makes up for the occasional public charge!
      That said, when I had the IONIQ 5 that was an absolute dream for public charging as it's so much faster. (The same would be true with the Kia EV6 and IONIQ 6.) They also pre-heat the battery now so the cold weather doesn't affect the charging speed as much.
      I'm going to be driving to Italy again this summer. I really wish I had the IONIQ 5 again for that!
