    [HyunA(현아)]
진정한 썸머퀸의 귀환! 데뷔 10주년을 맞이한 그녀의 새로운 모습을 보여줄 믿고 들을 수 있는 미니앨범 6집 [Following]

    • @ishankohlii
      @ishankohlii 6 років тому +1118

It's about how the industry infantilizes and sexualizes underage girls. As she's marking down her age saying "You make me 24" "I feel like 21" she's losing a sense of her real age because she's constantly being told to show off her youthful innocence and act younger than she is so that people will give her attention and so that she can stay relevant in the industry. What's really sad is when she says "I must've really wanted it" cuz she's referring to the fact that she complies with the industry's desire for young idols because she wants to please her fans. Also, notice how the music dies out when she gets to 17 and 15 which are underage. you can see her visibly uncomfortable. There are so many more allusions to this message all over this song.

But the age gets lower 19, 17, 15, is basically a grown man dating someone under 18. From the research I've done about it and many different color coded lyrics, online lyrics, etc. To me it seems like she's pointing out that there are pedophiles in the kpop industry, etc. Because as the ages get youger, you see she gets uncomfortable (also the music is turning off after 17) looks unpleasant. Most lyrics say "I cant sleep because of you" or something along the lines of that. My assumption is that what he guys gonna do next to her, why she cant sleep. In conclusion pointing out just because they seek nice on the outside, doesnt mean they're like that behind closed doors.

For the people who really don’t understand what is going on in this music video there is a double meaning, and it can be interpreted in both ways.
The First meaning is stated by HyunA’s team which is,
“Her sixth mini album "Following" will show new aspects of her upon the 10th anniversary of her debut. The title song "BABE" of her 6th mini album is a cute and witty song about a couple with an older woman. In the song, she portrays a woman who becomes like a baby as she dates a man who is younger.”
This is only the first meaning so that she could get the second meaning into the song.
The Second meaning is more than the eye can see.
It starts off with the lyrics “Why do you keep staring? Why do you keep smiling? Like That, Like That. Why do you keep acting like that?”
This is supposed to represent someone that is over her in the kpop industry with the power to make her act like a “babe.”
More lyrics suggest this throughout the song such as, “Like this, huh? Like this, huh? Why do you keep doing that” “I’m burning up every day, you twist me up babe this is indeed me whining, but you think it’s cute” and “I can’t figure out how old I am in front of you did you put a spell on me.” These suggest that she is being forced to portray a “babe” and not act like her actual age.
But the thing that is the most significant throughout the song is the ages counting down. HyunA starts at the age of 26 and continuously goes down to the age 15 which is what she feels like, aka. when she debuted.
In the music video seen at 0:21 you can see the screen burning while HyunA is wearing all white which could be interpreted as her “innocence” or “purity” is being taken away from her.
In the music video at 0:30 we can see her go in the box looking like how she usually is, but when the box is opened she is dressed in unusual clothing and looks very unhappy, you can say she looks like a “babe.”
There are also important parts of the video such as the scene with the flowers, the scene where she stops dancing, the scene with the sand, and the scene where she is seen outer space which can be interpreted in many different ways.
(Archi S Comment) - When she was saying "pamper me" she is sitting in a bed of marigolds which mean cruelty and grief. This is supposed to represent how she is surrounded by cruelty and grief.
Another significant portion of the song is the ending where she sings in a robotic voice to seem as she is being “controlled” into doing these concepts that please the people of the kpop industry.
Overall the second meaning is trying to show that the leaders of the kpop industry treat their idols anyway they want to and force them to do concepts that they don’t like. Many groups are forced into doing cute concepts and act like schoolgirls when they are grown women. The song is trying to say that this is some type of “fetish” that some people have, and the kpop leaders and just catering to it. Many song do this, but this song just had a good way of hiding it.
Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day!
    - Chris

Ok but this video is actually powerful.
    1. In the beginning she is happy, but it's burned away to reveal behind the scenes of seductive women putting her in a box, definitely showing how her sexuality is boxed up and hidden. Then she emerges dressed as a child, albeit a little racy - kind of a direct punch in the face to K-pop needing female idols to be cute but also sexy - kind of a conundrum.
    2. She walks off set to reveal a world beautiful and wonderful, probably her sexuality or the concept of being an adult or her being herself. Something she can only get to if she walks away from the façade that is the industry making her younger (you make me 25, 24, I feel like 21.) Notice how everyone around her keeps dancing as if nothing is wrong; she's the only one who's aware that something is off with the industry and she's one of the few to speak out about it.
The message in this video is much more than just our queen Hyuna being adorable and bubbly. This is a masterpiece in disguise.
Edit: thanks for all the likes and feedback!

I think this song is about pedophilia. Most NEW kpop groups are getting younger and younger and alot of the time sexualized by their company in songs or performances. As Hyuna keeps rewinding her age and says she feels 15 is because that is when it started, when she started to get harassed. She says she feels younger and younger with this person and turns from the camera at 15 is because this person hurt her when she was a child hence the "I can't sleep" because she's so traumatized by whats been done to her that she can't sleep. At the same time she is constantly watched by this person and is scared of doing something wrong because she might be abused again, or as she said feel young again, when it all started.

She's fine. Myself, and several friends, have worked and with her on different videos over her solo career (RED, How's This). Most of shooting a MV is standing and waiting and doing the same thing over and over and over again. But most of the time just hanging out with other extras. From the times getting to face-to-face with her on set, she'd tell you she's tired. When you are the talent, there is hardly a minute that goes by that someone isn't handling them and directing. And homegirl is a professional. This is not a cry for help. This is a performer who is doing her job well. The sheer amount of mental and emotional resources needed to constantly shift into stage over and over, with consistency is not for quitters. You know her name, have mad love for her and respect her because she is someone deserved of respect in her craft. Support her by representing her brand. She got where she is in this world because she WANTED it more than the next girl and, like Madonna, was gonna get to the top her way. It's Hyuna. She's fine.

I've just saw the Gloom's reaction video about this MV and I'm also having bad feelings about some scenes.
At 0.28: Maybe I'm overinterpreting things but there is a woman closing the "box" where Hyuna is going. In addition, Hyuna is dressed in a sexy way but she looks young (natural black hair and she debuted super young so that could mean she was trapped in multiple terms: the image made by the company, the company itself...). I don't know why but it reminds me when people are talking about executives meetings idols and entertainers in private bars to obtain opportunities in the industry.
At 1.06: The box looks like a scene and with the cute outfit and everything she could be denouncing something (the obligation to act cute in the kpop industry: aegyo, super short school uniforms...).
At 2.40: Going more deeper in the interpretation, this game of colors (pink, orange, violet) could means she was on drugs like "in another" world. It feels like she's disconnected/unconscious of everything.

If you turn on subs, and watch Gloom's (Kassie) video of her theory of this video, then you would know that this song, is not just bubbly and fun.. It's also daRK!
Edit: so I did some research, and made a theory..
She probably met some guy who had been stalking her, (probably her work place) and they talked and talked, later then she dated him, at first it was all lovey dovey, they had a nice time, to the point where he made her feel young again. Then as the relation ship goes on, he starts getting obsessed with her, then sexually abuses her, to the point where she doesn't know herself. 2:14 she starts feeling young, but in a bad way, not the usual way, she doesn't like it but she loves him in an unhealthy way. 2:41 the light between her legs, represents innocence and her virginity, that's to the point where she's getting raped. She loses her mind to the point where she thinks that the guy is treating her nicely, and treating her like a baby. 3:15 is where she really loses her mind and when she says "Now I'm your baby girl" it gets distorted, just like her feelings, thoughts, and her relationship
    That's deep
Edit: @Bluesterry 10 pointed out that it's also about the Kpop industry, which is also true and changed literally everything!
Edit again: Thanks for the replys! Again I can take criticism and yes I'm starting to think I went overboard with the theory and it's complete bullshit, but oh well, and I'm question why I have 1.2K likes because I just wanted to comment my thought process

I came here after Gloom's vid, but I was just thinking.... wasn't she part of wonder girls when she was around 15-19 and she had to quit because her parents were worried about her repository issues? Now I don't know if she has asthma, but she'd dancing like crazy and doing squats on stage, which makes me skeptical about her health issues, and the real reason why her parents made her quit wonder girls was because of something else. I know I'm not alone in this too.
Also the way the girls are dressed, all innocent but at the same time showing so much skin, like Gloom said "Panty Shot" reminds me specifically of another girl group that is wonder girls juniors, which also go pretty famous around the time this song was published? Was it a call out to them? Or is she calling out the industry in general and I'm just reading into it too much?

Hyuna left because her parents were concerned about her chronic gastroenteritis and fainting spells, and it's totally possible for someone to recover from that sort of thing. Even at 14/15 years old her image was to be the sexy member.

This song is pretty popular to be honest. It was just not so well known when it first released due to low promotion, but it got really popular since she's a judge on the unit now. The reason the views are like this is because they're spread out between this channel, and her official channel. That's still pretty good for a solo artist. More views than Triple H lol. Here the thing: You are not Korean. You are looking at this through your single, western lense. Sure, you like the pop music, but that's about it. You're a consumer and a fan, and that's fine. But unless you are Korean, or have lived in Korea extensively (and any Gyopo will agree; any K-town is Korean, but it is not Korea.) you do not know what you are talking about, and really have no place talking about it. Here is a hard pill to swallow: Believing your singular western lense is the only lense and the correct one, and thinking "well if only I could make them see it how I see it" is also called IMPERIALISM. And if you know ANYTHING about Korea outside of K-pop stage names, you will know how they feel about imperialism. You have a good background, but don't get ahead of yourself. One of real signs of intelligence is knowing when to respect the fact that you don't have the answer, and that you don't know how their culture operates.

@@donnadebruin4163 well first of all, yes I'm not Korean and I understand what you mean by that. But I am from also a country where we are seen as "child" (womxn) so I can partially understand how it feels like to be treated not as an adult, even though you are a fully grown person. Where I am from, we have still colonization consequences (South Native American) and the infantilization of the women is a part of it. I am not saying I can fully understand the complexity of the mechanisms in South Korea. Just saying, we may have different culture and countries if something hurts it's because it's not ok ( and also as ex-colonized countries). In my country such things are also banalized, so I do have "a hint" of the perception I had in the past. I got out of it, because it wasn't healthy at all and it hurt. I didn't mean to say "all these people are doing so bad and blabla or the stereotype that all MOC are hella sexist and blablabl (still, colonized manhood exist)". Because it's false, most of colonized countries have a reason (and still it's not an excuse) why they do banalize that. But is it a reason to just be quiet about it? And just let it pass, even though the people that are implicated feel uncomfortable and stand up also?

The ending vocals are so chilling, the way I interpret it is this younger version of HyunA (when she debuted) had completely lost herself and her identity to the industry, it progresses through the song, it goes back in time, at the start, shes 26 and happy, and knows herself and her identity, musical and otherwise, but by the end, it references the way younger her may have felt lost due to the sexualisation from the fans and company

Okay tell me if I'm looking too into this but the song is called BABE and she says "Tell me I'm your babe." Babe is usually a sexy term for an adult but she pronounces is "BayBey" making it sound more like baby. I just feel like this is purposeful to show that this person is both sexualizing and infantilizing her at the same time.

smart look at it but then again it may just be her -possibly purposal- pronunciation sine she isn't fluent in english

@@hello-pf2ew true, but she's clearly capable of saying baby (as we hear in the end). I feel like it's more for the word to be a bit of a diffrent aesthethic (like hwo many songs do you know wtih words baby/babe in them?). To me it doesn't really sound like she's trying to pronounce it for the sake of the message she's giving but we never know
