Written by Stan Jones in 1948, the story goes that when he was 12 years old an old Indian( that's what we called them before the world went PC) told him the story of the "Ghost Riders". 22 years later he wrote and recorded the song. Since 1949, it's been recorded and charted by everybody from Burl Ives to Charley Crockett, who recorded it for this year's movie, "Twisters".
This song was first done by Stan Jones in 1949. It's been covered more than 50 times. "As the riders loped on by him He heard one call his name 'If you wanna save your soul From hell a-riding on our range Then, cowboy, change your ways today Or with us you will ride Trying to catch the devil's herd Across these endless skies"
Johnny had the best version of this song.. He also had brass in his song "Ring of Fire".. He was one of the greats. He also did Gospel music.. And yes, you got it right when you said chaps
Stan Jones was the writer and recorded it in "48. Burl Ives sang it in "49. Bing Crosby and others did it. Cash first recorded the song in "71 and now it's a Johnny Cash song.
My favourite JC song! A couple of years ago, I was driving home from the beach around midnight with a big old harvest moon hanging overhead and this song came on, I cranked it to max. It was almost spiritual, I felt Johnny's spirit all around.
I’m a long time fan of Johnny Cash. If you haven’t already reacted to it his cover of Hurt by 9Inch Nails is a must watch! His wife June Carter passed away about a month before he recorded it and he passed away a couple of months after he recorded it.
This is the version I grew up with !! I grew up in the 70's with Disco and the Bee Gees, and Play that Funky Music and way too many to list here. But Johnny Cash and his Rockabilly music was the kind of music my Dad introduced me too !!! I still love it !! Love your reactions !!
Personally you should do the Burl Ives version for Christmas. After all he was the voice to the old 1970's claymation version of frosty the snowman. But cash version has that base
Everybody and their dog has done a version of this song, but this one is probably the best. But Geoff Castellucci recently did a music video that is almost as good with different versions of himself playing the parts of the ghosts. You should check it out. That guy has an amazing voice.
Johnny is an American treasure. His music is for everyone. It is always nice seeing someone experience him for the first time. He was serious at times, other times he wasn't. He had a comedy act in his shows. I recommend Hurt, Flesh and Blood (its a love song), and Ring of Fire.
Yes! The Ghost Riders! Original from 1948, written by Stan Jones and one of the greatest Western Songs ever written! :) It's been recorded over the years by more than 47ß artists... INcluding The Blues Brothers and Geoff Castellucci (check THAT one out!). :) But for me, the Cash-Recording is the best... Especially this liverecording from the late 80s. His voice, the guitar of Bob Wootton, the whole arrangement... And you can her, that Cash really LOVES this song! :) Maybe he was changing the guitars, because the first one was out of tune... Cash was a Western-Fan. He even recorded a double-album calles "Johnny Cash sings the Ballads from the true West".
They're not pants, they are leather that wrap around the legs and tie down the outside of each leg. They have a belt at the top, to hold them up, no seat or straddle. Yes they are called chaps and were originally intended to protect a rider's legs from brush and cactus thorns.
This is the most iconic version of this song. It is not, however, my favorite version. My favorite version would be the Frankie Laine version. I highly recommend all who read this comment to check it out.
The guitar he decided to use had a dreadnought body style, which tends to emphasize, the bass having less emphasis on the mid-range. The other guitar with a narrower waist (appears to be an OM body style), would have a more even volume throughout the range of the strings. The emphasis on the bass seems a good choice for a song like this. I always preferred my Dreadnought guitar when playing gigs, as I played solo and the slight drop in volume of the middle strings meant less likelihood of overpowering the softer part of my vocals, and I liked the boosted bass. But I would usually switch to a narrow waist guitar for songs I did in a finger picking style, where you generally want every note to be heard equally clearly. Another reason could be that one of the guitars used an alternate tuning, but I doubt that, since Cash very rarely used non-standard tunings.
There was a "genre" of western music, and somewhere along the way, became put together with country as in country and western, like Marty Robbins "Streets of Laredo". George Strait "Amarillo by Morning" would be in there. Wore 'chaps' to protect their legs from injury including snakebite. When performance is "second nature", if Johnny's version is not the GOAT version, it is "as good as it gets".
You need to check out the highwaymen. They do a lot of western music as well. This group includes Johnny Cash Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings.
Love those deep voices men!!!! There's an old story song called Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford who also has a deep voice. I think you'd like it a lot!!!! ❤❤❤❤
I mean, they are GHOST riders. They are chaps, but they've taken on some non-cowboy connotation, lol. I recommend "the ballad of Ira Hayes" and "Man in Black".
Duane Eddy - Ghost Riders In The Sky Duane is the former husband of Waylon's wife Jesse Colter and the grandfather of Struggle Jennings ua-cam.com/video/UMz8XRGxZdY/v-deo.html
I was born in 1944 and heard Vaughn Monroe's cover of this(1949) in about 1950ish .... scared me then and still makes me nervous today .... ua-cam.com/video/YAPCxfuBzyo/v-deo.html ...... Also check out Beryl Ives's version .... spooky also .....
You got it! It's gotta be one of the most redone songs ever. Move over Beethoven. And ya it's about repentance GOD and the thoughts that disturb our hearts and mind when alone, on a hill. In the great wilds of peace.. Greatest thing about it is that it is popular to the young in the 50s 60s 70s 80s, and ... well your checking it out. Also I believe the rift is easily learned so many a guitarist learned it early. COOL!
hi britt you should react to Geoff castalluci version of ghost riders in the sky or maybe the blues brothers version of ghost riders or rawhide or maybe you could react to leo moracchioli version of monster mash. land of confusion. what is love. gimme gimme gimme. paint it black. in hell i'll be in good company.
That's a good rendition of the song, and I loved the reaction. Here's a better, more lively, energetic rendition (IMHO) ua-cam.com/video/Et2OCCGj8mI/v-deo.html

wow, I just can't imagine Burl or Bing singing this
Disagree. Vaughn Monroe has the best version.
@@kevinhayden4605 did a search and a lot of them sang this, but my top two favs are Cash and Marty Robbins
He was the voice of the downtrodden and overlooked as well.
My favourite JC song! A couple of years ago, I was driving home from the beach around midnight with a big old harvest moon hanging overhead and this song came on, I cranked it to max. It was almost spiritual, I felt Johnny's spirit all around.
The guitars were most likely tuned differently and he wanted to make sure he had the one that was in the right key for the song.
Another great story song by Johnny Cash is "The One on the Right is on the Left"! Also Mark Chesnutt, "Bubba Shot the Jukebox"!
She would DEFINITELY love Bubba Shot the Jukebox.
I’m a long time fan of Johnny Cash. If you haven’t already reacted to it his cover of Hurt by 9Inch Nails is a must watch! His wife June Carter passed away about a month before he recorded it and he passed away a couple of months after he recorded it.
She’s already reacted to Hurt. A year ago. You can search her videos to find it.
Johnny’s rendition of “Hurt” comes from years of life and a deep pit of the stomach pain. He was made to cover 9 inch nails song. Just…Wow! 😢
This is the version I grew up with !! I grew up in the 70's with Disco and the Bee Gees, and Play that Funky Music and way too many to list here. But Johnny Cash and his Rockabilly music was the kind of music my Dad introduced me too !!! I still love it !! Love your reactions !!
Love it. Other cash you will love is “a boy named Sue” and “when the Man comes around”
Personally you should do the Burl Ives version for Christmas. After all he was the voice to the old 1970's claymation version of frosty the snowman. But cash version has that base
As usual, Mrs. Britt, you did a superb job reacting to Johnny Cash, which is why we love to watch your kids!!!!
Chaps are leather coverings to protect cowboys’ legs when riding through brush, thorny bushes, etc. So yes, you are thinking about chaps.
Everybody and their dog has done a version of this song, but this one is probably the best. But Geoff Castellucci recently did a music video that is almost as good with different versions of himself playing the parts of the ghosts. You should check it out. That guy has an amazing voice.

You should hear him do "One piece at a time". I'm sure you'll love it.
Great pick, now you owe it to yourself to hear The Outlaws version with incredible guitar solo action.
I was looking for an Outlaws version comment and happy I'm not alone.
The Outlaws have the most high energized cover of this song by far! 🎉
*@tenlittleindians*
Absolutely and anyone who’s ever seen them live will attest to it!!!
*@tenlittleindians*
Roy Clark and Glen Campbell, both guitar masters, have an incredible instrumental version. If you’ve never heard it, find it. 👍🏼😁
@Paladin70 Yes I have heard that version too. Probably the most famous version was in The Blues Brothers movie.
@
Haha forgot that until you said it!
Chaps, spurs and the ten gallon hat AKA the Stetson.
The Outlaws version is definitive
Chaps. You put Chaps on over the jeans to protect from being torn when riding through the brush.
Cash’s best song was one he never recorded. Allison Krauss sang it on his tribute album. “Captain’s Daughter”. So beautiful.
My favourite Johnny Cash fact is that his wife, June Carter, was a distant relative of President Jimmy Carter.
Yes! The Ghost Riders!

the blues brothers ghost riders in the sky was great for a movie cover the visuals were good

Chaps are the pants. Spurs are the star attachments to the boots. They are used to prod your horse to make it run faster.
My favorite version is by The Outlaws from the 80s. Give it a listen.
Geoff Castellucci has a version of this that will curl ya toes up ! He's a famous low base singer.......hey now !
There was a "genre" of western music, and somewhere along the way, became put together with country as in country and western, like Marty Robbins "Streets of Laredo". Marty Robins also has some good story songs. The most famous being Big Iron.
El Paso!
I didn't see the other guitar, but the guitar he is playing is capo-ed. It has a bar strapped across the neck of it to raise the pitch.
A Boy Named Sue is a must listen if you haven't heard it.
You need to check out the highwaymen. They do a lot of western music as well. This group includes Johnny Cash Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings.
If you want a western sound. check out Frankie Lane - High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me) .. Rawhide and he did the theme song for Blazing Saddles.
Life long Cash fan!! Love this song!! 😅
Go Johnny.
I think you should check out Johnny Horton. He was one of Cash's best friends before Horton passed away
Yep, as people said, they are chaps, but pronounced "shaps"
Marty Robbins tells a story in all his songs
Hey Lady Britt😁, It's funny how few songs that are original there are.
As a child, did you ever lay on your back, look at the clouds and allow your imagination see images?
I think you would like "big iron" for another western story song. Mike Ness does a great cover but I think Marty Robbins is original
I love watching your reactions to music videos Britt Reacts
Yes, they are chaps😊
The guitars are probably tuned to different keys.
Love those deep voices men!!!! There's an old story song called Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford who also has a deep voice. I think you'd like it a lot!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Britt, you need to watch Geoff Castelucci's version of this song. It's an amazing video!
I mean, they are GHOST riders. They are chaps, but they've taken on some non-cowboy connotation, lol. I recommend "the ballad of Ira Hayes" and "Man in Black".
They’re called chaps . You wear them over your wranglers.
Chaps for sure.
Duane Eddy - Ghost Riders In The Sky Duane is the former husband of Waylon's wife Jesse Colter and the grandfather of Struggle Jennings ua-cam.com/video/UMz8XRGxZdY/v-deo.html
Leather chaps over the jeans.
His Ring of Fire cover is also pretty good.
The adult female version of urkel
Please try Don't take your guns to town by Johnny, satisfaction guaranteed 😊

Out of context clip of the day 4:26
4 riders of the Apocalypse maybe?
You are a fan of Geoff Castelucci. He does aversion of this
I think you would love a great story song called. Don't cry Joni by Conway Twitty.
you need to listen to Geoff Castelucci sing this song
You need to listen to a little Johnny and June.
Please react to You Gave Me A Mountain by Marty Robbins, it will bring tears to your eyes.
You got it! It's gotta be one of the most redone songs ever. Move over Beethoven. And ya it's about repentance GOD and the thoughts that disturb our hearts and mind when alone, on a hill. In the great wilds of peace.. Greatest thing about it is that it is popular to the young in the 50s 60s 70s 80s, and ... well your checking it out. please do Johnny Cash God's Gonna Cut You Down
It's spelled "chaps", but it's pronounced "shaps"
I dont know if you will read this Britt but could you please react to The Corries The Sick Note otherwise known as the Bricklayers song
You need to watch the music video
"It's creepy." ........... it gets worse.
The voice that belongs in the old west is a toss-up between Sam Eliot and John Wayne.
