Water was comming in to fast and it takes a lot of time to mix it off properly also the backfill material would be saturated and there would be a soft spot in that area for a long time. If you do it this way and backfill pumps it just before they cover it up and you have a solid ditchline .
Sometimes their is no one around.but this technique is more for continuous water seepage and if you are digging toward a low spot where the water keeps following you .if you put a pump in then dig away from it the water will eventually just go by the pump suction hose and every 10 minutes you will be moving the pump.

simply get pump in trench for ten mins and pump all water out, then dig trench normally with no water to cause any hassle
