Tau almost got their ass handed to them by the most half ass mini crusade ever, Yes the Tau had underestimated the Imperium, but so did the Imperium underestimated the Tau. The Tau was so shooken that they retook their entire Navy from a merchant fleet to a military one, and they still can't handle the Imperium's minor scouting party. They thenTau realize if the Imperium saw the Tau as a threat, they would be wiped off the map. And if the Imperium was not so busy already, they would do so for a holiday.
Given this knowledge about Dreadnoughts, Bjorn really deserves a lot of mad respect, having been confined to his Dreadnought sarcophagus and not give in to madness for ten millennia (at least). I know the fans love to hype up his senility in their stories, but serving the Imperium for as long as he is, even if confined to a Dreadnought, is an achievement in itself.
I want to the guy that introduce the mechanicus to a bunch of 80s and 90s media, both documentaries and movies. Imagine the hero's reward they give you for footage of the first moon landing.

Bjorn is the grumpy old man who in his perspective is waken up every 5 minuets to talk about that wanker Rus, and notices his younger brethren becoming disturbingly more and more wolf like and is annoyed they keep on getting the stories wrong. So Bjorn becomes more and more belligerent not out of senility but because he tried of being annoyed by theses stupid Wulfen. Although he didn't complain when they accidentally lock him in the same room as a female inquisitor, she almost declared the whole chapter traitors as Bjorn keep hitting on her.

I'd see Iron Hands spamming them in a vehicle heavy army. Has all the trappings and skills of a Techmarine but in Dreadnought package. It can smash, it can blow with salvos from its guns and repair machines. And the massive servo-arm would be used for power sucker punching.
Grey Knights also have standard Dreadnoughts as well, both normal and venerable. However Grey Knights do not like being interred into one, as if they are defeated, they would rater be dead and entombed on Titan, then be in a dreadnought. Needs must however and the Grey Knights do use them as they are a very efficient heavy weapons platform. The DreadKnight on the other hand, you did get correct, as they are only piloted by the most skilled of psykers the Grey Knights have. Even Grand Masters that do pilot one are even more rare then a normal pilot but are incredibly powerful (bot lore and game wise). Note: Long time 10 year Grey Knight player...I still miss the old Deamonhunters codex at times.
Even if Astartes could retire, how many of them would even want to? Dante is over a 1000 years old, and is still game for a fight at a moments notice, and he is noted as being tired of battle. Which is still a full moment after most of them are ready. Most of Astartes have the same level of aggression they did when they were recruited, which is simply not condusive for retirement.
