Comedian Andrew Maxwell takes five British creationists to the west coast of America to try to convince them that evolution rather than creationism explains how we all got here. Stuck on a bus across 2,000 miles of dustbowl roads with these passionate believers, Maxwell tackles some firmly held beliefs - could the Earth be only 6,000 years old, and did humans and T-Rex really live side by side? It's a bumpy ride as he's confronted with some lively debates along the way, but by the end could he possibly win over any of these believers with what he regards as hard scientific fact?

Phil is one frightened little dude, down inside. It's important to remember, though, that someone or some society did this to him. He couldn't help being born into the community he found himself in. He couldn't help it that they refused to teach him critical thinking skills, or just didn't have any themselves. To any believers in creationism: don't fear enquiry. Don't fear looking at evidence. Don't fear grappling with understanding. God would never punish that. God would never punish a genuine desire to know and understand the truth, the truth of the real nature of Nature.
Some of the participants in this doco seemed reluctant to let their guards down. The moment something appeared that seemed to them might contradict their current understanding, you could see the guards thrown up. They were too afraid to listen wholeheartedly and allow even for a moment the possibility that what these learned people were saying might hold a modicum of truth, that after reflection they might incorporate into their worldview.
God doesn't punish open-mindedness, learning and attempts at rational thought, and identifying truth and falsehoods. God is nothing if not truth itself.
To always shun new ideas is to be wrong in one's beliefs. God will still love you if you are wrong, but you will live in fear and be ignorant of how things really are. You will be a Phil.
I believe that to love truth is to love God.
Blind belief in the bible will not lead you to truth. At the very least, learn the history of the bible's origin: it wasn't sent to earth on an angel's errand, it was written and compiled by multiple authors and editors over many centuries, maybe some of whom were inspired by God, but just as easily maybe also some who were less so. They had different cultures, levels and types of education, and agendas. It is a human creation and humans are fallible. Just as you don't believe everything said by your fellow humans of today, you should also read the bible with a discerning outlook: keep what seems good advice, what is loving and pure and brings you closer to God. Ignore or even outright reject anything that doesn't lead to the goals of spiritual love, and genuine truth and understanding. Consider it a tool in your spiritual journey, not a brick to weigh you down in your quest for truth and the real nature of God.

A man murders other men out of their own choice. Whether they rationalized it through religion, science, patriotism or anything else of the sort. The words of Muhammed or Jesus didnt pull a trigger or thrust the blade just as atomic theory didnt kill all theose people in japan. A man without God or religion can be just as "evil" as a man with God or religion. same goes for a man of science and morality and a man without.
humans ascribe human qualities to things because being human is all we know and its the only way to partially understand and connect with certain things. we ascribe human qualities to dogs because we want to be friends with dogs(or any other cuddly animal). to do so you have to belive that they are at least, in some way, slightly like humans. we like animals that love because we ourselves have that capacity. We don't know if the animal even experiences love like we do, we just say that dog loves its owner as its owner loves their dog. Or you feel connected to your car so you name it. Still, as it is intergrated into human nature we'll have to wait for either, evolution to happen or a catastrophy.
The concept of existence is to much for any human to handle, you either accept that you'll never quite understand even 1% of it or you adopt a simple world view with some Deus ex machina built in for any possible critique. As humans are scared of the unknown, it is no surprise that many people need to cling to some certainty, even if constructed.

And then Phil proceeds to try and avoid accountability by not addressing the man in front of him directly (at the end, with the rocks) and instead insulting him by using words like 'these people'.
Furthermore, while I do like the presenter (in the way that he was calm and composed), I feel a lot of opportunities like this to point out irregularities in their reasoning where completely ignored. When people rebuke, please give them the opportunity to elaborate on their claim of 'conjecture' instead of outright saying 'no no no look at the evidence'. If you want to convince someone of your standpoint, you first need to open up yourself and be prepared to be convinced yourself. You cannot call someone close-minded and unwilling to accept your standpoint if you went in there with the express purpose of winning them over to YOUR side without considering the 'other way around' option.

If you want to compare 2 opposing beliefs, you need to give each side the same opportunity to present their arguments and subsequent criticisms in a balanced manner. Most importantly, it should always be done in respectful language as well. Insulting your ideological opponent will only put up barriers and make a constructive debate impossible.

Imagine one kind of mammal living in some environment. Eating the same stuff in all that territory. Some type of grass that grows there plentifull. Now imagine a great flood that floods part of that territory. It now has become some kind of wetland territory where the old kind of grass can not be eaten anymore. The other part is not flooded. The animal in the wetlands will have to search for something else as main foodsource. If these two groups are isolated enough geographically and start to eat different things they will change eventually. Problem is that most people think that they change because of some kind of magic. Its much simpler then that. Every new generation is never exactly the same like the previous one. Between 4 siblings you can have differences in length of every organ, from a bigger hart to bigger claws. If there is a pressure from the environment that prefers one characteristic instead of the other offspring that has it has a better chance of survival. When they survive, that trait survives in their dna and they pass it over to the next generation. So we see a growth of the horse through evolution. From an animal that was as big as a dog we have now very big horses. Had a lot to do with the food they ate. But you will say, its still a horse. Or take the penguin. Its obvious its a bird. All features say its a bird, from bones to the anatomy. But they cant fly. So we can presume there was a time where they could fly. But they are too heavy to fly today. They are you could say evolving between land animals to seaanimals. There was a time probably that they lived mostly on land and didnt swim or swim only coincidentally. The more they swam for fish, the more the offspring that could swim better had an advantage. Because the better swimmers had more offspring and the genes for better swimming were given to the next generation. The ones that didnt swim well had lesser offspring. Over time the swimmers will dominate the lesser swimmers. This means that each generation the body will adapt more to a life in the sea. Its obvious that the penguins living in 50000 years will swim better then the ones today. Simply because this mechanism never stops. Again the better swimmers of all good swimmers will have more offspring etc, etc. So in a few millions years you could have an animal that was flying once and that now swims 24/7. Well, we have that already. Dolphins and other wales are originally landanimals that transitioned to the sea. You can sea it in the fact that they have a very bad way of breathing in water. They need to get air every once in a while. Otherwise they will die. Its far from perfect. But it paid off. There was plenty to eat in the oceans. So animals dont want to change. Animals need to change in a changing environment. If the environment and foodsource is stable they will not change or change very little.

@@jojox6145 Well, you need to keep in mind that religion involves beliefs. Science is based on evidence, no beliefs required.
When I was growing up I learned from my pastor that if anything conflicts with scripture, it must be wrong. AIG and other Christian creationist organizations have 'statements of faith' on their websites that say the same thing. This creates problems for many people. During Galileo's time, for example, the Church sentenced Galileo to house arrest-- just because he looked through a telescope and saw things that conflicted with the religious beliefs of the time.
The Church was wrong. We know the Earth is not the center of the universe, based on direct observations of nature.
We also know that the universe was not created over a period of days and then finished. The universe is never finished. We observe galaxies in various stages of formation, we see stars going through their life cycles, we see that the universe is still forming stars; the Milky Way galaxy gains a star or two every year.
Unfortunately, many people still think science is based on beliefs and opinions. We see this all the time-- some Christians deny the fact of biological evolution, for example, because they interpret scripture in ways that conflict with observed reality.
This problem won't exist forever. Now that we have internet, religions are slowly dying out. With each new generation, more and more people are learning what evolution actually is, and that science is not about beliefs. It's about observations of the real world, and forming hypotheses and theories based on those observations.

As our brains are not capable of overcoming certain limits, for me there defenitly is some gray area where religion and science kinda overlap.
Ex.: if God is real, what was before/created God? And what was before that? => goes on infinitely
If the big bang is really a thing, what was before, what made it happen? And what was/happened before that? => same, goes on infinitely.
See the paralleles? Both religion and science created a starting point, as we can't really perceive infinity. We "know" the concept of it, but cannot quite understand it wholy.
So I think that both, God or the big bang are some kind of "anchors" to position ourselves in this unexplainable thing we call beeing. Humans are afraid of the unknown, so we need some security through explanations, even if false.
So I do see some common points and possibility of beeing religious/spiritual and rational at the same time, as rationality and logic (human concepts as well don't forget) are lacking as well.
But isn't the vastness and mystery of life what makes it worth living?

    • @richardfraser5060
      @richardfraser5060 2 роки тому +1

I would have thought that blind faith would be more like insisting that nobody was responsible for the existence of, say, St Paul's Cathedral. In the physical world we know that creation and design is literally everywhere, so to claim that nobody designed St Paul's would contradict the evidence.
With the knowledge that humans are, by nature, creative, that in itself is enough for us to ask "Where did the ability to create originate?"
Faith of course, being faith, involves believing things that can't be scientifically, demonstrably, proven. But having faith that we have a creator is informed by what we observe in the natural world, so I don't entirely agree with the use of the term "blind faith".

Most people can't see the truth. Only a handful can see differently. They majority see the sun rise, rather than see the Earth rotate. They see a car speed up, slow down, or perhaps even come to a complete stop, and they do so even though that car is always in motion, and the magnitude of that motion, never ever changes. All that can be changed, is the direction of which the car is moving within the 4D environment known as Space-Time. That is why the faster it moves through space, the slower it is moving across the dimension of time, and vise versa.

As we humans are not completely conscious of our existence and world we live in, which we know, we'll never be able to see/understand the whole truth. We can only try and approch as near as possible. Oh, and anyways, everyone lives in their own little world, even complete understanding of other humans is not possible, as words and thoughts are always interpreted and cannot completely represent your impression of life.

The world rotates but it’s a constant and not felt and therefore more of a background concept. Velocity is the measurement of time and distance. You need to know velocities to determine magnitude. • @deathbreach3448

In my point of view, creationism can still exist alongside science.
It may take millions of years to see evolutionary changes, but perhaps it’s deeper than that on a spiritual level?
Perhaps it did happen over millions of years and all things in all of reality are laws governed by god?
Or perhaps like Jesus said, “I am God, you are God, all things are God”, maybe we are just a hypothetical creation within the mind of a God that knows everything created was itself thats why every human explains the unexplainable via Gods Will?
We could be nothing but an extension of an imagination within the consciousness of a God with the knowledge of infinity and we’re physical observers within a complex infinite reality consciousness with a lifetime not even considered a glimpse in the long history of the beginning of reality.

Islam is based, like Christianity and Judaism, on the teachings of Abraham.
Islam believes Jesus hasn’t come yet, and Jews believe he hasn’t nor ever will.
Other than that there’s not much difference. Same 10 commandments, same Old Testament.

Ths madness called "creationism is based upon a malicious translation of the Hebrew verb "bara." Bara should be read as to separate, to cut apart, to divide, to renew. Genesis one is about the separtion of the year into six months of darkness (the six nights) aka winter and the six months of light (six days) aka summer. This is illustrated in the Last Supper by Leonardo Davinci.

These guys are also hardcore atheists, with no sympathy for those poor creationists. There are plenty of Christian scientists who would have done a better job in addressing their fears and concerns.

Approximately 56 minutes into the program during the conclusion one of the participants suggests that maybe evolution is the way God created the world. I believe this is the most enlightened perspective in the entire production. Both science and religion are approaches to truth. There can be only one truth therefore science and religion must be in harmony. if religion does not agree with science then that religious thinking is superstition or a wrong interpretation. It must agree with science, but neither can science negate the truths of religion. Just because science cannot yet prove certain religious truths does not make them untrue, our science has simply not become subtle enough to prove some truths.

Not to mention the giants (which YHWH, in the Genesis myth, summoned the magical flood to kill) were not wiped out by the flood. Basically, his creation acts how he creates them to act, he gets upset with his own failure and summons a magical flood to wipe them out, kills everything else, but the giants still survived. Kind of a screw up, no?

@@seekingthemiddleway4048 I can respect your willingness to come that far, but I would offer you the thought-food that flood myths crop up in many places because floods were extremely dangerous and threatened people everywhere they relied on natural water cycles, as well as the fact that many of the flood myths (including the biblical one) come from the same Mesopotamian source. Another good example of the "common myth" fallacy is the wide spread worship of the sun around the world far into prehistory. This doesn't make the big ball of burning gas at the center of our solar system an intelligent being worthy of worship.

    • @megatech9938
      @megatech9938 Рік тому

No, but the mixture of salt with nonsalt water will have impacts on aquatic life. Would all animals from different continents survive if they were in Antarctica? No, because some don’t have characteristics that would allow them to survive im a cold climate. Certain oceans like the pacific is more acidic than the Atlantic. So having a worldwide flood would heavily impact the conditions in the environment which many animals would not be able to survive in. There are epilagical zones and continental shelfs that contributes to the food cycle and ecology of the aquatic biomes. With a flood, it would eliminate those environments and cause many species to become extinct. If there was a flood there would he a mass extinction, with no recorded trace of a mass extinction happening there would have never been a biblical flood.

@@megatech9938 Good point. However, we have no idea what, if any, change it would have made to the water composition. The biblical account talks about the sea floor opening up and springs bursting forth so the water from that would have been considerably different.

That has been proved to be one of the stupidest questions atheists ask! Atheists fundamentally believe there is no such thing as the 'supernatural' (or the metacosm as I prefer to call it). But look at the hypocrisy involved: for example, the Big Bang theories are (also) the result of materialist/ uniformitarian thinking where the only stuff that is real is stuff we can experience (even if aided by instruments) with our physical senses. Like neo-Darwinian evolution. it is also based on speculations founded on unproveable assumptions. Yet the numbers don't work, so they have to invoke fudge factors such as dark matter and dark energy - stuff which BY DEFINITION we can't experience with our physical senses! Yet Quantum theory points to the reality of the metacosm (for example, invoking up to 6 further dimensions that we are not equipped to experience), something which The Bible has been saying all through history!
