    Two things, first, as a former picture framer, it would help to draw those pencil lines in the ditch close to the edge of where the stretcher frame will be. That way, as you pull your fabric taut, you’ll easily be able to tell to keep the weave of your fabric pretty even. Second, if you keep a pair of pliers handy, you can just squeeze and pull the top handles to the bully clips off so they are not in your way as you work. Then just reverse that when you’re ready to remove your piece.

      @rughooking  3 місяці тому

      Not many rugs are put on stretchers, but I love your ideas. I would recommend hooki line or just outside so that when the rug is mounted, the pencil lines will not show.
      Thank you for the tip about the bull clips. That one will be put in place for the beginners.

    Jen McIntosh Before I had decided which floor frame I wanted to live with I ordered a hospital tray table online and screwed my old lap frame onto the tabletop. It allowed a variety in height and the tabletop could angle up and down for a comfortable position, It really worked pretty well ,though not at all portable, which was just fine . But it's a good option for a beginner , the hospital table costing under $20 at the time.

      @rughooking  2 роки тому

      Good solution. I attached a frame to an Ikea RÅSKOG Utility cart. I just turned the top tray upside down and installed it lower, I could then attach a cameral monopod. Works perfectly for demos but not so good for long term hooking because you cannot get your knees underneath.

    Did this as a Girl Scout and loved it. I know most cotton is used for braided rugs but can i use denim or 100% cotton for hooking? I live in the South so wool scraps are hard to come by. Plus wool moths eat my yarn!!! So another thing to care for is Not a plus!

    I know you put this video out a long time ago but if you are still getting messages on it I have a question. I purchased someone’s wool hooking supplies. There is a backing cloth printed with a pattern and they started hooking a very small amount. There is a little rodent damage in a small spot and a larger spot of what I assume is rodent urine. Can I/ should I wash it before I work on it? Can I make a small cross hatch repair? The alternative is to just cut up the monk cloth that is in good repair and use it for smaller projects. And info would be most appreciated.

    • @rughooking
      @rughooking  8 місяців тому

      I would recommend transferring it to another backing. Not because of the damage --- because it is monk's cloth. That is the hardest backing to hook into and it gives, in my opinion, an inferior finished project. I would transfer it to linen, or my favorite, rug warp. Monk's cloth stretches and is floppy. Rug Warp creates a firmer rug that lays flat on the floor. You can buy rug warp here: cindigayrughooking.com/product/rug-warp-rug-hooking-backing/ and learn more about the backings here: ua-cam.com/video/wqvCI_EZA58/v-deo.html

    Cindi, thanks for all the information. When your doing a small picture, do you start in the middle and go outward, or do you start on one side and move toward the other. Also, Love your necklace, where can I find one like that?

    • @rughooking
      @rughooking  Рік тому

      Where to start depends on the pattern. Not all patterns get the same treatment. Sometimes you start in the middle, most often you hook what is on top first, something I cover often during Office Hours, included with The Rug Hooking Journey membership. I think the important thing, at least for me and how I color plan, is that I never hook all of something solid. I jump around the pattern and only hook portions of motifs until I know I have the major elements right. No one get everything right the first time through the rug. Why would you hook all of it if it needs to come out later. I explain more in my online color planing course: howtorughook.com/pcp

      It really does not matter, mine is a combination. Avoid the ones that spin on a ball. Yes, you can turn them, but they are constantly turning and the ball is a weak point where it often fails.

    Do you go in every hole or skip a hole when hookig?

    • @rughooking
      @rughooking  2 роки тому +1

      Neither one! It depends on your backing, it depends on how thick the wool is and it depends on if you are hooking a straight line or a curve. Put the hook where it feel right. If you are pushing the loops out of the way to see the backing, you are wasting a step. Just slide the hook in where it seems right, pull up the loop.. Your loops will be further apart and it will be healthier for the rug. If you line of loops lean, you are packing and putting your loops too close together.
