Today I am fixing Lola's (my mother-in-law's) family computer, which is reported to be slow and also doesn't turn on sometimes. I might yet again end up mostly rebuilding it, but that's what you would do too if you had a garage full of PC hardware right?

Thanks for watching the video everyone! Lola's computer was returned today and is already being put to good use 😄 Personally I am still very limited on time to produce content but just for another couple of weeks. I will still be aiming to get one video made per week and Kyle and I will still be doing the live show. Thanks for your patience! 🙏❤️

You could use a backup software like Acronis, I use it when doing reformats as it reads the disk directly and doesn't have to deal with the filesystem/seeking being super slow. Using the bootable USB version, create a backup image, store it, and then you can recover whatever files you want at the speed of the new drive instead of going through each file separately.

My #1 tip for PC repair, ESPECIALLY if a virus is a possible issue, is to boot to a portable linux distro running on a disposable USB stick or a DVD. I've only recently been getting back into repair side-jobs, but when I was last heavily into it I always had puppy on a DVD and a CD in addition to USB just because back then (in the ancient, dark ages known as ~2014) not every BIOS I had to deal with liked to boot to USB. It lets you quickly verify that all of the hardware works and that you're not dealing with weird driver gremlins. Then you can go ahead and back up files to another external drive and scan for malware while safely sitting in linux and not trying to deal with the issues that come along with trying to plug up holes in the boat your floating in.

My in-law brought me an old i3 win7 pc with the same issue so all I did was uninstall and clean all the crap, do a media/doc backup, clone the hhd to an ssd, do a free upgrade to win10 (yes, u can still do that), add 4GB of mem, a better cpu cooler and a better psu, reformat and move backup to old hdd and DONE!. Paul's approach, like many other top pc utubers, was more of a "rebuild/replace all/new pc" than a simple upgrade which is ok when u have lots of unused hardware laying around.

Got to make storage and where auto tries to save to summy-proof for most old non-techy folks. Seen tech setups new pc's for customers and not do this on laptops that have a small SSD and a large 1TB mechanical and data gets saved EVERYWHERE and not organized properly when the SDD runs out of space.

I have almost all my family come to me, i've had family members come and give me their computer to fix, in one case the hard drive failed, and this family member got upset with me, for not replacing the drive for free. (I mean the physical drive, not the labor) and I told her, hey i'll fix it, reinstall windows and try to recover data off the bad drive, but since I don't have any spare hard drives laying around you need to buy materials.
They got upset over it, and told me not to worry about it they'd take it to a shop.
They quoted her something outrageous like 375 dollars to replace a 1tb hdd, so a week later she brings it back, asks me to fix it for her; I tell her the price of the drive, and then I asked for 50 in labor. So it came out to like 100 bucks all together (rounding a little). I would have done it for free, but being rude to me or entitled loses that :"Family discount" pretty fucking fast.

I just switched over to teh ASRock AB350 board so I can add a capture card as my old board only had one pcie x16 which is taken by the gpu. Did not realize until I added the card that the card won't work if I also have an nvme drive plugged in since they share space (mobo disables 2nd pcie x16 slot if nvme is populated).

Given you identified a drive issue I'm surprised you didn't run smartctl to pull the drive's prefail statistics to verify how many failed sectors have been swapped out. Its available on the system rescuecd or from smartmontools.org. Your average Joe isn't going to have a garage full of spare parts to swap or full system replace with and would like tips on identifying/replacing the most likely core issue. Also, clonezilla running in rescue mode to a new SSD might have been informative.

I've got the same AB350 Pro4 mobo (going to be used for a new system for my parents) and I've got my system with an ASRock X470 and I don't like how ASRock does, on both of them, BIOS up to a certain point will support Zen and Zen+ but after a certain point it will add support for Zen 2 but it states "not recommended" for Zen and Zen+ anymore.

They would be similar. Both would work very well with smaller files but performance goes to shit if they're overloaded with too many simultaneous things or huge files.
