Wow!!!! I taught English to this man from 1973 - 1974 when I worked one year at a highschool in Hildesheim, Germany. He was a wonderful student with beautiful handwriting. He also had a fantastic sense of humour. So happy that he has this amazing career and gorgeous voice
No matter the the amount of pain in any realm; physical, mental, sociological; if you have a real talent and choose to work with it and put in time you will prevail. I have no idea if this man is making a living as a singer but he does a hell of a job anyway.
He made a living as an internationally famous singer, one of the most distinguished bass-baritones in the world. Eventually, when he was over 50, he moved from classical repertoire to jazz singing, from which, by the look of it, he takes enormous pleasure - and he still sings to very enthusiastic audiences.
Listening to this interpretation gives me so much, I don't have to try anymore. Let it be... When someone does it so much better than any other, it shouts to surrendering. I give up, let Thomas sing, others be silent..
This was the only time I took to a vocalist on this song. I think it's one of the most beautiful songs known to man. But a solo piano player gave it its fullest beauty, I thought. Then I heard this fellow, who I knew nothing about. Assumed nothing. And it's so beautiful.
I think I like his voice better than Fischer-Dieskau---something I NEVER thought I would say--ever. And his interpretive powers and insight are not lacking in the least. Bravissimo!
He does what every singer must do, viz >Inhabit< the song/aria. Professor Q does so superbly, he brings the piece alive; a beautiful voice is the icing on the cake.
I prefer playing cornet to trumpet, but whichever the score calls for is the correct choice. I agree with you - those cornets are so beautiful, both in sound and appearance!
This orchestration is such a great example of the time in which Offenbach lived and wrote. It is an example of art song meets theatre. While I agree with zrshwe, I find this to be interesting and warm - especially with the mellow brass. It is reminiscent of Mahler's orchestrations.
As always, Thomas Quasthoff shines. But, please Standchen is accompanied by PIANO, because this beautiful lieder needs the sensibility of this instrument. There is no added value whatsoever by all this orchestral colors.
Quasthoff is a good solid lieder singer but, in all honesty, people let their generosity of spirit get the better of their rational minds and overrate everything he does. The same phenomenon afforded Andrea Bocelli a career. ...hate replies incoming ...who am I kidding, no one listens to classical music anymore :-)
+Ben Copeland Please don't put Quasthoff in the same category as Bocelli just because each has a handicap. Quasthoff has one of the finest bass-baritone voices of *any* singer around.
Ben Copeland nobody listens to classical music? That is the most incorrect thing I’ve ever heard, more and more people listen to classical! It may not seem like it because of the terrible mainstream music that is out, and it seems like everybody likes it. But to say classical music is never listened to is just not correct! It’s more popular now than years ago, people are starting to see how good music can be rather than this, monotone lyrics about death and violence and sex, over a trap beat that is popular right now!
I would not put Quasthoff and Bocelli in the same category. (Bocelli does far more crossover stuff.) Quasthoff has done some jazz. But his Dichterliebe with Helen G and his Bach cantata work put him securely into serious classical contention as a singer and not just a curiosity with a nice voice .

THOMAS QUASTHOFF IS TRULY PEERLESS - WHAT A GIFT TO ALL OF US - SCHUBERT WOULD BE AMAZED!
I could not agree more with you.

This music has comforted me in sorrow.
So beautiful, warm, and sensitive!

its actually for piano and voice if i'm not mistaken.
“ And is so beautiful”……say no more.
Isn't the piano solo version a transcription by Liszt?
Não há muito o que expressar,! Simplesmente espetacular👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Herrliche Worte zu herrlicher Musik!
Really beautiful. A great sensitivity and beauty of sound.
Beautifully done!
Really beautiful voice.
Fine performance of leider with intensity and beautiful rendering of text
Maravilloso!!
I only sang this song in Chinese.but it is one of all my favourite and one Day will learn it in Germany. I love Thomas.
dear Yin Yeung, do you know of the Chinese version here on youtube? Would love to hear it. Xie xie!
I love the fact that he's singing it in the original key (to my ear...) and doing a great job of it!
He's not though, he's singing it in C minor, while the original is in D minor
I think I like his voice better than Fischer-Dieskau---something I NEVER thought I would say--ever. And his interpretive powers and insight are not lacking in the least. Bravissimo!
I must concur - Quasthoff has the superior interpretation.
Kyllä on kaunista kuultavaa.
He does what every singer must do, viz >Inhabit< the song/aria. Professor Q does so superbly, he brings the piece alive; a beautiful voice is the icing on the cake.
Excellent !
what a wonderful moment !!!
Impecable!!!
Quelle belle voix qu'il a...
Bravo!
Magnificent.
Fantastic!
Fantastik! Brava!
Beautiful!
Sublime...
Bravo.
Maravilloso.
@theconfusedsinger I agree that he could have sung it down a tone from the usual baritone register. The top seems almost tenorish for Quasthoff.
Thomas. ☝️ 😍❤️
BRAVO QUASTOHFF
Awesome !
1:14 those cornets are so beautiful

Merci beaucoup

I love the frame you put around this. True!

Beglücke mich!

Original version with Schubert's piano accompaniment is more intimate and much better than the orchestral accompaniment.
That's in the ears of the beholder
the brother of FRANK, Cezar.
Frank Schubert????!! It's some new
Srepitoso

honestly if I was the one I would'nt have answered to his love, the music is creepy
Poi dici che forse sei romanticantica secondo me leva il forse
bravissimo Thomas, brutta orchestrazione comunque, piuttosto pacchiana

Bullshit!

Quasthoff deserves more respect than being mentioned along Bocelli. It would be like comparing Elvis to Segovia or Horowitz to Liberace. Please!

dal vivo una vocalità mediocre, poco bella .
viva il pop moderno !...
When I'll die some day, I want, that this song will be played.
