This song was way ahead of it's time in Eurovision terms.
This was my second favourite song from 1997
The UK was my favourite though
Specially when touching his balls lmfao.
Right now i was thinking to comment about that! The song and the performer was faaaaar way ahead!
I don't think it's ahead of it's time... I feel like it's out of place...
The song is great, but not for a competing nature
Absolutely
Only 4 countries had televoting that year, and Iceland got 16 of their 18 points from those countries. This would have been top 10 if everyone had a televote.
If this song was presented in 21st century it would have been a winner without any doubt. Too futuristic for that period, when only jury voted
Franco Antonelli actually in 1997 the televoting was first introduced in 5 countries
And most of Iceland's points came from them ;P
Matthias Ortner yes, 16 of 18 points, the latter two was from Estonia
No, if that was played today it will be considered masclist, sexist, patriarchal, and blah blah blah.
@@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 Propably, It wouldn't do well either way
An iconic song of the 90s Eurovision. Grossly underrated.
You probably confused underrated with Terrible.
@@DoctorHverthe 0 likes on your response tell a lot.
It's sheer perfection. The song is wonderful, the chord changes are a thing of beauty, the perfomance here is simply the sexiest thing ever on the ESC. The ladies are gorgeous, Paul is gorgeous. This clip will forever bring a smile to my face. Fantastic.
It's probably my all-time favorite song. No joke.
@@adrianaortega6280 mine too...It's so enigmatic too I love this songs soooooo much!!!
The song itself is awfully boring but I grant you the show was interesting.
Well said Chris. I have to keep repeating this vid every few years just to remind myself what a startling piece of ART, this is. As others have said, way too good for the ties and jackets of Eurovision juries in 1997, but when corona has got a grip and I'm missing nightclubs such a lot, this one reminds me of how good life is going to be when this plague fks off :)
He is like an egoistic simp in a musical.
Example of a perfect performance.
really
Hatari: 1997 Edition
True
That instrumental at 2:22 would be accompanied by deafening screams of approval at Eurovision today
The jury robbed Hatari just like Paul, but both performances are greatly loved by the fans. Iceland will win ESC one day, I am sure!
Maybe this year!
Iceland lost any right to win when they did that idiotic showing of palestinian flags. THIS song should have won.
@Keith Peters You have no idea. :(
Not sure why my comment was removed from years ago, so i'll leave it again.
This was ground breaking stuff at the time. Today it may seem tame, but Paul Oscar blew the stuffiness from the ESC from that year on. Prior to this, the competition was pretty much stiff upper lip, homogenised and controlled to be conformist and vanilla. Paul came along with this, and simply took it to an avant-garde place with sexy dancers and a cheeky suggestivity within his performance. The black pvc and the centralised focus on him accompanied with that pulsating bass really created a performance that set the standard, going forward, for people to be much more open creatively.
Paul Oscar, you are and were a true ground breaking icon. ❤
One of THE best songs Iceland's ever sent to Eurovision! 😉
Totally ahead of its time, great song.
this song was too ahead of it's time, amazingly dark message and amazing performing from paul and the women dancers, all of them looked so somber and it was amazing. definitely my fave not only from 1997, but my fave from iceland and one of my faves from the 1990's too. everything here was STUNNING. i feel this could've won even the 2017 contest.
The best thing about this song is that because it's sung in Íslenska. And great song altogether.
I like how the orchestra how it's working together with this techno beat. Unfortunately, this song wasn't appreciated very much of the juries, definitely deserved more.
yep
Well, Szymon Kuran wrote an orchestra part specifically for this song, on the studio version there's no live instruments as the orchestra part wasn't ready before the deadline of songs submitting
@@eurodara Szymon Kuran definitely has a big part in how beautifully this song was translated to the stage. This version far outclipses the studio one.
setheurovision94 Credit as well to the RTE Orchestra - notorious though they occasionally were for not being very versatile or adept at contemporary pop, they absolutely nailed this song, and rose to the occasion for songs like Turkey’s and Greece’s as well that they might’ve stumbled on in other years.
Hatari's kinky dad (?).
i came here just for this comment
Oh yes
In spirit maybe, but he is very much gay and nobody’s dad :)
As a long standing Eurovision fan, this has to be one of the most memorable for me. Great song and singer and performance. Love it.
It's one of my favourite tunes to appear. But many great songs didn't even reach top 10 due to country voting and political crap
Я 26 лет это помню. Прелесть!!!!!!!!
А диван это супер режиссерская сцена!!!!
Totally innovative song and performance, unfairly underrated that year!
One of my fave Eurovision tunes so underrated
I remember it now. And adored it before Eurovision. I couldn't understand why such bad balls he had...
I think this is most revolutionary esc song/act in 90/ early 2000´s. Deserved so much better place, it could easily be top3 in 2000-2002
It is absolutely perfect and easily the single sexiest thing ever seen on the ESC. It's just wonderful.
I am astounded at how amazing this sounded with an orchestra, being a song that basically thrives with the backing track.
2019: Iceland is so kinky..
1997: Always has been.
If they had full televoting that year or he competed in 1998, he would have been top 10 for sure, the production on this is so great, the lyrics are great everything is perfect. The shot from above in the begining is ine of my favorite visuals in esc history
For me the most underrated Eurovison song of all times. This was just perfection.
Agreed ❤️
Always loved this especially the brief piano bridge at 2:22! Greetings from England.
This would still be a great entry in 2016
Mauricio Arnaldo 2018 too
But not in 2017
in 2019 too
And let´s not forget 2020 ;)
Wdym? This would still be a good entry in 4057, it's that great.
Now, where did Maruv find her inspiration?
True!
The music is simply beautiful: that violin string and the piano going down… This is is mesmerizing. One of my all times favorites.
Concordo, é de uma aura impressionante!
I just visited Iceland in 1995 and of course I fall in love with its people and culture.
I followed Iceland very carefully at the Eurovision (the only source of information about the modern icelandic culture at this time !)
And surprisingly I didn't love this song at that time.
I remember saying to myself "What a weird song and choregraphy"
It didn't get much points and finish last of the competition, which I thought was well deserve.
Forn about 15 years, I completely reverse my opinion and understand how in advance this song was for such a competition and times.
This was in fact a real masterpiece in every detail of the performance.
Pall Óskar perfoming in 2017... at the ESC 1997.
Legendary performance and very underrated at that time.
Après cette prestation rien ne fut pareil a l eurovision , il a révolutionné le visuel et le son , intemporel . ...20 ans d avance sur son temps ! Un régal..
Too much innovative, too much aesthetic, too much GOOD for ESC !!!! WONDERFUL song, performance, stage ... Bravo Paul/Páll !!!!! Iceland 12 points !!!!!!!!!!!
love it, the only fucking reason i started to work in this country 10 years ago ;-)
You went to Iceland just to meet Páll Óskar? Aaaw!
The moment Eurovision lost its innocence.
Extraordinary, erotic song, beautifully sung and choreographed. For me the most wonderful song at ESC. I love it now as much as i did in 1997.
Me too. My favourite song ever.
The last Eurovision entry produced by RTÉ. Feels like a lifetime ago...
One of my most favourite Eurovision songs.
And mine too
Lightyears ahead of its time!
And a masterpiece of course.
This is actually amazing
One of the better ones. Just too modern for this particular euro.
the drum beat and synth are one thing but the orchestra totally another. the strings and the piano gave a totally new edge to the song and it became even more seducing and thrilling. the strings going off at the second verse is everything. everything was perfect, except he was a year too early
Awesome answer!!!
Obviously a Gary Numan fan. Love it
The fact that my country (Sweden) televote gave this 8 points is making me very proud.
The best Icelandic song at that moment, and also the first that make them withdraw Eurovision because of bad result. Oh, Eurojuries...
Song was definitely ahead of its time . I saw someone mention this on a Hatari video as this performance had leather outfits before they did. Paul is handsome too
One of the best things about this performance? Its position in the running order was just perfect luck - as it seemed to herald in a new phase of what Eurovision was to become.
Still, to this day, a fantastic performance and beautiful mix of thumping dance beat to swelling strings.
I think this could have done a lot better had it been sent a couple of years later when televoting was introduced.
Ironically, televoting was partly introduced the same year, but only in some countries. If memory serves, it wasn't rolled out to all of Europe until 1998, or perhaps even 1999. So, yeah, bad timing indeed for Páll and the ladies. :(
for some reason I think this particular performance is remembered by many teen boys who watched this in the 90s.. i dont know why...absolutly not :D
Try to understand the concept: the last 1990s, when the sexual revolution on TV was still underway, and Eurovision was still 'conservative' due to the voting - only juries had to vote before, but in this particular year televoting was tested in 5 countries. This is a heavily sexual performance, with a man wearing tight leather and eyeliner touching himself surrounded by four inexpressive women acting like fetish dolls with nothing but a white coach on stage to cover that huge step. Eurovision was never the same after that performance, and this particular result would have been absolutely different had this song been entered a few years later - it got only 18 points, but 16 of them came from televoting.
Of all the songs I can remember this is the one I come back to time and again...x
THIS IS SUCH ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER FROM EUROVISION...EVER...SO WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME..LOVE TO ALL..I KEEP WATCHING THIS...
This was 22 years ago, my friends.
You cant call this a classic esc song at that time but i remember I loved that it dared a lot more than normal at that time, somehow 10-15 years before time.
Impressive performance
Such a cool stage that year
Fantastic song. Perfect performance. Greetings from Spain
i love this song and it should have won the Eurovision song contest
It took me some time to appreciate this song. Now it's my 2nd favorite Icelandic entry after 1999. Great song!
The song was before it's time I love it another 10 years later it would of done so well
Find this song in my head at the most random of times, a masterpiece
one of the best ever and way ahead of its time..I agree with all on this....so creative....love to all. xoxox
Прекрасная песня, красивый, яркий певец, но для того времени смело
I love how it ends with the music going slowly like a bit broken.
Iconic performance!
perfection
Ok this song is amazing, way ahead of it's time and deserved a lot better
Also congrats Pall Oskar on being the first openly LGBT person at the time of the performance to participate in Eurovision
At least in top 5 of the most famous / iconic Eurovision songs from Iceland.
yet again back to listen...just amazing ow good this is now in 2021.
2020 winner :)
I love how people were so scandalized over Maruv in 2019. When THIS happened 22 years before. Honestly? THIS is groundbreaking. Maruv was basically boring. Like, what did you do that was new? Why would it spark such a controversy? (I know, the Crimea drama was there too) But I kinda watch THIS and I admire Iceland for sending this in 97'. Love it.
I love this Song!
Avantgarde stuff!
I think UK gave this high points - 8 or 10. We appreciate good music. Pall is perfect 👌🏻
6, I think...
This underrated song had the misfortune of being 22 years ahead of its time. In fact in this festival only 4 countries used televoting for the first time and of the 4 received votes. Nowadays he was a clear favorite to win or top 3 for sure.
Amazing ❤️❤️❤️
very in front of its time
The born of modern eurovision
Wonderfull artist ! Oskar !!!
2024 and I am still dancing minn hinsti dans...
love this
My first impression was a bit negative; however, on multiple listens, I got to understand the song more and its alluring appeal. The lyrical content is quite nihilistic, however, considering that it's talking about death. But I can't disagree with those who noted this broke the mold in multiple ways--not only musically, but also performance-wise and in LGBTQ+ representation.
Elda Mengisto same here. The instrumentation (orchestra mix with drum track) is sublime.
Una gran canción.
Lo más parecido que escucharemos en el festival de Eurovisión a los grupos tecno pop de los 80 y 90.
Preciosa cancion!
so far ahead of its time for Eurovision.
Yeah, this song was some 10 years ahead of its time.
25 years*
Best eurovision song ever!
MY NR.1 in 1997.... GREAT🔥
Paul Oscar, little proof what 22 years later Hatari would do.
If this had been an entry a few years later, this would have done well. It was ahead of its time
This is everything ❤️
when eurovision entered modern times.
He looks like Gary Numan! haha
Really? That's pretty interesting. He reminds me more of 1980s David Bowie in this one.
Paul Oskar, je l'avais découvert justement durant cette prestation à l'Eurovision. S'il est vrai qu'en 1997 ce style détonnait pas mal, j'ai tout de même apprécié la chorégraphie. J'ai quand même apprécié Katrina and the Waves, gagnants cette année-là. J'avais visité l'Islande en 1995 et j'ai toujours été fasciné par cette ile volcanique. J'ai donc toujours eu un petit faible pour ces artistes durant l'Eurovision.
Masterpiece
What style of music is this i really like it
London, Paris, Rome became empty words
I walked the wide and golden road, blinded by love
False acquaintances, revolved around me alone
I had some caviar, it’s all too late now
For I take my final dance
And bid my life farewell in style
Yet I never regret a thing, never regret
Crystal champagne, pearls, porcelain
Diamonds for dinner, love for dessert
If I love today, it will be in the papers tomorrow
I take a bubblebath and drown my sorrows
And I take my final dance
And that’s how I bid my life farewell in style
Yet I never regret a thing, never regret
All that I get today, has gone away tomorrow
So I take my final dance
And that’s how I bid my life farewell in style
Yet I never regret a thing, never regret
Dear God, I was so turned on by this... I was way too young for it too! Haha.
still brilliant after all these years
¡¡ MUY BUENA CANCIÓN !!
