Tout nap avanse vers le développement, vi nou vin dire mwens.🤦♂️ C'est vraiment triste! C'est ainsi la vie!😔😔
OMG, cant believe I have stumbled onto this. I was there when the song was written somewhere in Upper Austria, when it was recorded in New York, when it was mixed in Vienna / Austria, when we shot the Video in Haiti, just days before Aristide was ousted, and finally when it was all mastered in London. Memories, far too many memories. We were young. Damn young, foolish and we were believers - cause we didnt know better. I dont know what became of Lele (her given name was Shirley). Last thing I heard was she lived in Orlanda / Florida. Havent seen her (or this video) for like 20 years now. Its still a great song. Matter of fact, I still have all the multitrack data of the song. Maybe we should do a Remix on of them days... who knows.
Man, I just thought today about that song and said to myself let me look for it. And here it is. BTW, sir, I like your comments about that song. Can you tell me if she (Lele) used to have a serious musical career and if that's her only breakthrough song, cause I don't know any other song of her, and you seem to know better than me?
Gianni W. Well, we did an entire album at the time, the year was 1991. It was supposed to come out in the course of '92, I think it would have been August? Anyways, what happened was, that the record company (Dino Records) went bust very shortly before the scheduled release, so even though we had some real good airplay in the US as well as in parts of Europe, neither single nor album ever got released, not to this day. She had an airplay hit in Austria and Haiti (!!) after that, it was called "Titide back to power", which also was off that album and distributed to Radios before the collapse of Dino. That was about i She later moved to Florida to her mum, and thats the last I heard of her. She has a kid to my knowledge. Shirley was some 3 years older than myself, so she must be in her early 50s now. Great album though, the music press raved about it at the time. Alas, never got into the stores. Sad story but some priceless memories too. I particularly remember the shooting of that video. It was directed by this Asian fellow, sweet guy, who had built a name for himself directing a lot of Miami Hip Hop clips. He too thought this was gonna be his final breakthrough, the video actually did win first price at a number of video clip festivals. Coudlnt remember details though, except for that it was on power rotation on VH1 for some time. Enough brain picking?
MrBowidl Thanks for your info. Just fell on your msg. You're awesome... Yeah, by looking at the shooting quality of the above video of Lele you can feel some foreigner's directing touch... BTW, back in the days I remember having once listened to that song "Titid back to power" and, talking about it, I think one of the reasons why that song didn't make it to become a classic is because it failed to be on point as its msg contrasted with the fact that exiled prez. Titid did not actually return to power around the time the song anticipated it... Another thing, how come you know so much about her? And while talking about Lele, you always mention some Austria-related stuff. Does she have some parental roots there as she seems to be biracial? And you talk about her song having been once on VH1. Isn't that some media known for airing only videos and songs in English? Wish I knew more about that lady. BTW, I looked for her on facebook and could not find her. I guess her real name is Sherley Giha, right?
Gianni W. Her name is Shirley Giha. She was daughter to a Haitian couple living in the US. Her auntie married a very nice bloke in upper Austria. Shirley then came to Europe to study opera singing and lived with her auntie for some time, traveling to Vienna to study there. Thats when she meet a rather famous Austrian / German singer, who was with a tremendously successful band, his name was / is Klaus. I knew Klaus, or rather we had a very good joint friend. I myself was an up and coming music producer at the time, still very young. Klaus engaged me to do some demos with Shirley and when they turned out well he later on secured a record deal for her with Dino Records in Frankfurt (who were not really after a Creole singing Haitian beauty but more so after Klaus' band who's record contract with EMI was about to run out) Thats how that record started. Shirley and I then travelled to Miami to my dad and started work on the actual production there, then spending some time in Haiti looking for material and people to contribute their arts to the record. We ended up doing most of the recordings in New York and got Boukman Eksperyans to play on the album, like all of the percussion as well as most of the backing vocals would be Boukman. I then finsihed and mixed the album back in my studio in Vienna / Austria. We flew back to Haiti to shoot the video, it would have been August '91. The mood in Haiti was very different from half a year earlier, it was all grim and tension was everywhere. Just days after we left Aristide was ousted. We were all upset, rushed back to the studio and wrote, recorded and mixed "Titide Back To Power" in a total of 3 days, and it was addded to the finished master of the album, which is why its the last song on the album ;-) Anyways, it all turned out really well, better then expected by most, particularly Dino was surprised that they all of a sudden had a real good album at their hands. After all that whole record contract had been mere politics. They then didnt quite know what to do with it, lesser so when the video started winning festivals and VH1 started airing the song. The album ewas hailed at the New Music Seminar in New York, press started raving about it. So the didnt release the album for almost a year, picking their brains how to exploit it. Soon enough labels from around the worrld joined in for a worldwide release which was due for August '92. Shortly before that release Dino collapsed. Alas the record never got released. We did try and do it all again, like tackling new songs, but we never managed to spark again, the new material wasnt good at all. So we left it at that. Meanwhiles I had a huge hit with another band, so Klaus' band invited me to work with them. I worked with them for a few years. As for Shirley, she never recovered from her record never coming out, it was a huge blow for her. A couple of years later her relationship with Klaus broke up and she went back to her mum to live in Orlanda / Florida where she had a child. Thats the last I heard of her. As for myself, I still do what I've always done, currently working with Conchita Wurst, whom you may or my not have heard about. She won Eurovision last year. Which is funny in a way, cause my last collaboration with Shirley would have been the attempt to participate in Eurovision back in 1996. That project too never happened, the song we wrote at the time was no good. Shirley and I we had that one gloriuos moment, which was that particular album. that never came out. But it seems we had said it all on that album. Its a truly great album, possably my best work to date. I'm still very proud of it.
MrBowidl You're amazing. So awesome. Thanks for the time taken to provide all of that elaboration... Man, by reading your lines about the hard work, the hassles encountered to put Lele's album together, and seeing all of these efforts and sacrifices ending up being sterile and all of that fading away, my God, I can imagine it must have been, as you said it, a serious blow for her. And I feel so bad for her... Yes, I've heard about controversial Conchita before...Thanks again and God bless you.
I wish I were alive during this time so I could propose to her. I am a middle aged man who has served in the military and been all over the world. I have seen all sorts of flavors of women, yet she’s quite honestly still the most naturally beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.
I can't count the number of times I can online searching in vain for that song THXXXXXXXX!!! Finally!!! I almost gave up! KOTE MOUN YO OOO NOU PA WE MOUN YO ooOOo
