@@889976889 In some ways, it is. Reading is one of the poorest cities in the entire country and has a high crime rate. Plus, I live in Reading and trust me, you will not find much to do here. The thing that is really bad here are the people lurking around who are possible criminals. On Penn Street, there are a lot of businesses on that street, but there are also a lot of scammers and weird street punks who try to kidnap children or do stupid and disgusting things. Of course, some other cities have similar situations like this, but there is a lot of this that you would find here in Reading. Plus, there is a lot of abandoned homes and buildings, littering on natural environments, and many issues with a spotted lanternfly.

Reading also has had many riots at the intermediate high school in 3 years and is known for the clown story where Christian Torres was stabbed by someone who had a clown mask on. Reading is kind of boring to with lack of recreational events.

I agree, I lived in PA for twenty-two years, and never once got an "earful" for calling it a "state." But one might still get an "earful" for badmouthing the state or even a particular part of it. I have noticed that a lot of people in PA seem more defensive about their state than people in most others. I have even noticed something about Lancaster. It doesn't seem to be a big deal with people in that city, but there are some people in nearby rural and suburban communities who are picky about the way Lancaster is pronounced. There is even one Lancaster County suburbanite who posted a meme about it on Facebook. In the words of Briggs, "I kid you not."

To start to the founder of PA, was William Penn. Hence the name of the state. So, of course in Philadelphia was the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and constitution. Philadelphia used to be the capitol of the US, but then we switched it to Washington D.C. some monuments in PA, is independence hall (where the Declaration of Independence was signed and kept for many many years. There’s the constitution center where the constitution was signed. There’s the liberty bell, which I have actually touched before (there was an old lady attendant who was in charge of the lines and she saw me with my son and brought us to a side door where we were allowed to touch it because there was no line). There’s many more USA monuments but those are the big ones kept in PA. Culture: the state used to be mostly quakers, including William penn himself. Any other more specific questions you have I would love to answer.- cheers

Everything you just said is wrong. A family friend lives next to an Amish family here in PA. Shadiest people you'll ever have the misfortune of meeting. They wanted this woman to sell them land that she didn't want to sell. They didn't take kindly to her refusal to sell, and responded by entering her property with firearms and shooting all her animals. They then told her they'd shoot her and her family next if she didn't reconsider. Local police were completely ineffective and unhelpful (shocking, I know), and these people are still terrorizing her family to this day. It's appaling that these people are not held to the same laws that the rest of us are. They should all be lined up and shot.

This video is ridiculous and absurd. I’ve lived in Pennsylvania my whole life and the only statement that is remotely true was the caution about taxes. Hunting season is not that big of a deal. I’ve never seen fireworks are off for hunting season. Kids always celebrate Halloween on October 31, I never take public transportation except the regional rail lines and would not recommend public transport as a means of avoiding traffic delays because you will still be stuck in the traffic you are trying to avoid. I have never once EVER been stuck behind a horse drawn Amish buggy and have only seen about 10 buggys in active traffic in my entire life.
This video seems to have been made by someone with a very narrow range of experiences in Pa.

Pennsylvania is politically a purple state. Both the PA Dems and the PA GOP are functionally the same here-- not quite liberal but not quite conservative. I mean, they play lip-service to their parties' respective ideologies occassionally and have a few outlying candidates here or there, but functionally? The same.
Both are irredeemably corrupt, almost no legislation ever gets passed and for that reason nobody here cares about commonwealth politics.
Hell, township and borough politics have more of an impact than those crones in Harrisburg.

The roads should be number one by far! If they’re not in horrendous shape, they’re lined with cones for 5 miles yet no one is ever working on them! The PA turnpike maybe the worst, most outdated road in the country and the tolls are absolutely outrageous! Gas is also far higher in PA then the neighboring states.
Also, I have family in the Pittsburgh area, I’ve been told that public transportation is not much in that city and they’ve cut a lot of it. It’s essential to have a car in that city! Don’t know what the situation is with public transportation in Philly, flown out of the airport a few times, which is usually terrible, but in Pittsburgh you’re SOL if you don’t have a car. Don’t even get me started on the two obnoxious NFL fan bases 😑
Still, I will admit that PA has some gorgeous countryside and some really good microbrews!

Born and raised in Philadelphia. Never in my life heard it strictly referred to as a Commonwealth!
So sad he forgot to mention we have some of the top hospitals in the country right in Philly. I now live in a very small town, with its own post office and all, but I still go to center city Philadelphia for my medical care. This guy dissed the Amish, that wasn’t cool. When people want really good food, furniture, or even a hand made quilt, they seek out “Amish Products”. A friend has a custom made table that’s about 60 years old, passed down and it still looks brand new. Yes, parts of the city are drug ridden and also many homeless, just like in Portland (only they call them transients - whatever - they are homeless human beings). Anyway, if the power goes out, or worse, the Amish wouldn’t even know the difference! They actually live in a community, as we were meant to really live in family groups, seeing our families often, if not daily. This is the main reason each generation across the globe, has a rise in depression and other mental illness (because we are not living like we were designed too). We’ve all just gotten so far ahead of ourselves and forgot what’s really important- family and community! Pennsylvania is one of the most beautiful states in the country. I love his top ten small cities video.

Heroin is literally everywhere here these days. Lastly, we have a high concentration of racist groups headquartered here as well, mostly in the outskirts of Cumberland, Perry & York counties.
Lots of good reasons to live here though, we're within a few hours drive of NYC, Washington DC, Baltimore, etc... Pittsburgh & Philly are both amazing cities with lots of things to see & do, especially for history buffs.

I wish I knew what you were talking about, and I wish you did too....It must be wonderful to be an expert on things which you know nothing about.. I listened to your video and being a Pennsylvania resident for over 60 years,I can say,, you were only close on The traffic issue, and that only applies to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, during rush hour.. Which can be rough if you live on one side of town and work in the other side of town. I guess you have never driven in rush-hour traffic in Los Angeles or San Diego or Washington DC or New York City or Boston or San Francisco. I worked in Pittsburgh, right by the football stadium for 40 years, I lived 15 miles from there, and my commute was 24 minutes, five red lights, and a handful of stop signs. No problem
You don’t know what you’re talking about with Halloween, or the Amish, or the hunting, I have never heard anyone referred to the state as a commonwealth except for you, I never heard of the United States being referred to as the 49 states and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Halloween, not hall oh ween is on October 31. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Friday or a Wednesday, kids go out and trick-or-treat. The only day changes I’ve ever heard of were because of some sort local towns high school football games being on the same day at times, they may change the day in that event so the kids and parents can go to the football games and have Halloween trick-or-treating the next day or the day before. That way the parents can be home to give out the candy, and the kids don’t miss going trick-or-treating because they went to the football game either to watch, or be in the game, or they’re in the band or they are a cheerleader.
I’ve lived here all my life, over 60 years, I know three hunters. That’s it, and I live surrounded by hunting area/woods that can be hunted. Your video implies that half the population of Pennsylvania walk around with hunting rifles on the streets during hunting season. That’s not so.I wish they would come and get the deer that eat all my bushes & shrubs.. I see deer pretty much every day. I have heard coyotes, but I’ve never seen one. When a bear is cited, it makes the local television news. I live 15 miles north of Pittsburgh. Heavily wooded, wooded all the way up to Lake Erie.. in fact, Pennsylvania has trillions of trees. Pittsburgh alone has more trees within city limits than any other city of its size in the United States.
I believe your headline and story is just click bait. You can’t really give any true specific information about the state to fill your video so you make stuff up. You should work for CNN...I do not live in Oregon, so I guess that qualifies me equally as an expert on Oregon.

I've lived in southern California since 1973. The social and economic trends I've witnessed over the years, living here have been nothing short of horrendous. I am originally from the south hills part of Pittsburgh, I will be moving back with in the next couple of years to the same area , probably Mt Lebanon or Upper St Clair township. Pennsylvania has no state tax on pensions or social security and housing is reasonable. For the price I sell my house for in California I can buy three for cash and rent them all out and live very comfortably. Enough said!!

Philadelphia should not be the number one reason not to move to Pennsylvania. Philly for the most part is a great city with a lot to see and do. Granted it has poor crime infested neighborhoods primarily in North Philly, Kensington, and scattered spotty areas in South Philly but most of the city is prosperous and doing quite well despite the urban problems. The city's population increased somewhat in the 2010 census and recent estimates have shown a continued population increase. So dont be so down on Philadelphia. Hey there are a lot of small towns and rural areas that are not all that great.

Reasons why I love Pennsylvania it's great for the Outdoorsman as it's a gun-friendly state, there's tons places to go kayaking, camping, boating, hiking biking, fishing. And then the Philadelphia Parking Authority will ticket your car for an expired out of state registration tag or out of state inspection tag, really for any reason. I've lived in the Pittsburgh area for ten years and have explored much of the state. Some of the small towns (Franklin, Hollidaysburg, Bellefonte, Gettysburg, Bedford, Carlisle, Jim Thorpe, Columbia, etc.) are really lovely places full of history and charm. Of course, we have the two bigger cities, Pittsburgh and Philly on both ends of the state. Both of these cities are gorgeous in the historic districts and business districts, and depressed in the outlying neighborhoods. Pittsburgh in general has extremely poor suburbs like Wilkinsburg, Mt. Oliver, McKees Rocks, and Duquesne. Philly is either exquisitely gorgeous or depressed, depending on your location in the city. Philly has unsurpassed urban beauty in some spots, ugliness in others. Pittsburgh has the gorgeous mountains, rivers, and bridges. Both cities have great architecture. Philly has preserved neighborhoods from the 1700's. After the two big cities, you have a large number of smaller cities, like Harrisburg, Reading, York, Allentown, Erie, Williamsport, Scranton, Altoona, Johnstown, and Lancaster. In my opinion, the small cities in this state are extremely fascinating! They are all historical places. Some are more depressed than others (Chester and McKeesport are the most depressed, and worth a visit if you are interested in urban ruins and problems as I am). Reading is very poor, but has tremendous architecture, as does York. Harrisburg is the capital. It is a river city and has an awesome river park adjacent to the beautiful downtown historic districts. Erie is one of the nicest small cities in PA. There is a lot of tourism to Presque Isle on Lake Erie in the summer. Johnstown is one of the most interesting small cities. It's famous for the 1889 flood that took 2000 lives. It seems like a haunted place.

Grew up in Harrisburg and you've summed well some of Pennsylvania's uniqueness, which can be challenging to grow accustomed to. A few tips to be aware of:
1). The county seat of Lancaster County is spoken with emphasis on the first syllable, not the second. Locals will immediately notice if you pronounce it like it is anywhere else; and probably subtly correct you by repeating it in the preferred manner.
"Lank-ah-stur" is probably the simplest way to write out how the locals pronounce it.
2). A general rule of thumb with Sales Tax: If it's unprepared and vital for human survival, it's probably not taxed. If it's prepared or otherwise a "luxury", it's taxed. This is why you can buy the ingredients for a sandwich and not pay tax; but pay tax if you buy a prepared sandwich from a deli counter.
3). Hunting season is indeed a big thing, but when I was a kid it was typically done as a way to feed families and prevent the deer from overpopulating. As such, rule number one about Autumn in PA: if one is in a wooded area, wear bright colors, so hunters don't mistake you for a deer.
4). Diners in rural/agricultural areas have some of the best PA food, at often very reasonable prices.
5). If you're in a town with an established Farmer's Market, they're usually open weekends and often well worth a visit. Amish Markets in particular often carry a great array of regional foods and other delights.
6). In winter, expect to have at least one good snowstorm, hopefully sometime around the Holiday Season.

Traffic is a problem everywhere, all the time in Pennsylvania. Online traffic maps usually do not show local construction (only PennDOT projects), never show utility work areas, and are unreliable for showing crash obstructions. Signage is inadequate, and on state roads, signs that are in place are often covered by overgrown trees. Post-shutdown online shopping made it worse, because now, even semi-rural areas have groups of delivery vehicles moving through them on days when several disposal services are collecting in the same townships. Count on every trip taking twice as long as you think it should if you drive in Pennsylvania.

It’s a ghost town outside of Shamokin; the ground underneath the old town is on fire-literally. It used to be an old coal town, before someone set an open vain on fire by accident. When holes started opening up under people and people started getting sick from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning; the State started buying people out to condemn the land. Some residents refused and the State claimed Eminent Domain. Here’s the baffling part though: Some people still live there; the population’s under 15, last I checked.

Word of advice. If you think Honesdale will be a northeastern Utopia by the time you move there, cease the illusion now. It’s already going downhill. Best thing to do is choose a place and be prepared to make compensations. Whether you trade off security for culture or vice versa, everyone in this world is learning to do this now.

Lived in philly for two years. It was just as rough as NYC and if you make a wrong turn in a place like fishkill or south or north philly you might not make it out

You left out west Philly. I lived in Philly for many years. I moved to Oakland CA in 1998. They said it was a dangerous city...it had nothin' on North Philly. I felt safe in Oakland.
