Dude, great video. I started messing with charts last week, and kept looking for features that weren't there. Hopefully Microsoft keeps improving it instead of de-scoping charts like they did with Access.
Without BI in our subscription thank you very much just came back for a refresh before starting a new app which needs to be more visual than previous. Last time I built some fairly snazzy graphics just on setting location, size and colour of objects... All which expanded based on a timer. Behind the curtain its very cheap, but worked effectively. I'm going to need to use charts on the next one though! I like the idea of using the on select to either expand the size of the chart, and select items to potentially go down a level in granularity.
Excellent video as usual Shane. A pie chart would be handy to identify a range of items which are below an acceptable level. Clicking the slice to further break apart what items are in the "too low list". Useful for a quick visual of a stock items status. ie no items in the red slice so nothing to order. Items in an orange slice is getting to reorder point... items in red are at or below reorder point.
Thanks again Shane. I have a column in my list that counts down days from today's date to a Client check out date. It dynamically updates based on what day it is. (Also go that from you) Is there any kind of if statement that I could use to only chart the records that hit 7 days or less? It's turning my head inside out trying to even think about how I would write that. I'm trying to figure out a dashboard or email flow that will alert users when the days until checkout hits that 7 day threshold.

Why can't I see some columns for adding to Labels or Series in the charts? The column that I want to add is a Choice type one, so I don't know why it doesn't appears as selectable

I'm developing a small app to collect Applicant details and then their submissions of Art-works to a competition. So, each applicant can have 1 or many Art-work submissions. The first part of the Canvas APP collects their Application details and uses (Patch) to update them to the Applicant Dataverse table. The next screen collects their Art-Work details (and repeats this process to a maximum of three entries). However, each separate Art-work submission (Dataverse record) needs to be linked to its Parent Applicant record using the previously entered (under Application Form) SURNAME. I currently show the ART-Work record Lookup Field from Art-Works record on the add Art-Work screen - but not sure how to set the lookup USING the SURNAME entered in previous screen? I can display the previously entered surname on the add Art Work form - but not sure how to ensure its (USED) by the lookup field and therefore ONLY ever returns the matched name . The alternative at the moment, is showing all applicant names and requires USER to chose their name from the list . Not ideal lol. 🙂 Any thoughts are welcome. I'm enjoying using Power Apps canvas having developed software in the past using Oracle, Cobol and yes Vax Basic lol 🙂 Revealing my vintage Lol Any ideas welcome . Thanks Shane.
Is there any way to control the space assigned to the labels of a chart? There is very little space by default and all my labels are cut. If only it was possible to force them to be multi-line text or to give them a bit more space...
Hi Shane, I have bit different case, I have 2 data sets, 1: full Table with all possibilities per person. (Upload form) 2: Table where the Upload form is sending the data to. Now my first Table is 100% and the 2nd table the % depends on the upload form already done. I wish to create a chart where it will show that for specific Country the upload was done in XX% So how I would approach in comparing those datasets using a chart?
Radoslaw you will have to get them into one collection. So imagine you are going to ForAll through the first collection to find the amount from the second collection and create a 3rd collection that has your results. Then you would show the 3rd collection. I hope that makes sense.

Hi Shane, Filtering a gallery via chart selection was exactly what I was looking for, BUT... How do you clear the selection and clear the gallery filter? Reset(Gallery) isn't working. Someone had a slick formula to reset View/Edit via UpdateContext, BUT it didn't clear the gallery filter. HELP! :) I also tried setting a variable, but I couldn't get the variable to capture the chart slection. Used a text label to verify nothing was happening.
If Power Apps knows the data is changed. So if a gallery would have refreshed then yes the chart would have refreshed. But the chart itself isn't looking for changes.
@@ShanesCowsI had a similar question. I have a gallery and a chart on the same page. My button to refresh the chart runs a clear collect to gather the data that I need and summarize it and it works very well for the chart. My issue is that when I add or delete an item from the gallery via a form I added the clear collect into the unsuccess but it is not updating the charts. Do you know how I can get that chart to automatically update based on the gallery being updated? I have not been able to figure out that trick

I am struggling with Choice fields from Sharepoint Lists. They do not appear for Label/Series selection in the PowerApps Charts, only Text and Number field types. Question, I am using a SharePoint list as a data source and trying to group by a lookup column that references a related list. The data shows it as a record but doesn't accept it in the group by. Am I missing something?
@@ShanesCows It doesn't even recognize that the column exist. As a possible work around, is there a way to create a collection that stores the lookup column as a value rather than a linked record. I am using several collections but it looks like the lookup columns are stored as sub tables for lack of a better word.
@@russellhenry951 In the sharepointlist create a calculated column and assign the lookup column (=[status]) here status is a lookup column , now the calculated column listed in the powerapps columns list. use the calculated column for groupby function

If I have 1. feb, 120, 2. feb, 100, 3 feb. 200 I like to have only one dot for the feb with the sum 420 and so on for all the months, but I can't figure it out. Another great video. One question from me - at the end when you added a gallery to show the department members, could you have used the DATA from the collection you created? Just wondering if it's more efficient to build the collection once and then use it in more than one way.
Hello and thank you for the inspiring videos. I am attempting to create a chart using your instructions where I want to group Departments into blocks. However, I am not getting very far as my columns are missing. It only shows "Field1, Field2, and so on. It does connect to my Sharepoint table i can see. Erlier in the app, the columns appear as they should. This is on Screen3. Google nor ChatGTP4 have given me any answers, praying for you now :)
Great Video as usual. I do have one question. I'm working from a Sharepoint online list that has a date, hours worked and a bunch of other data. I create a collection where I can GroupBy Month/Year and then sum the total number of hours worked for the month. But, some months have no hours. So, when I do the GroupBy, that month doesn't exist. When I chart the data by month, of course, that month is left out. Do you have any ideas how to get all the months to show (even when there are 0 hours worked?) (And, thanks for all your videos....without you, I would have given up long ago.)

Hi Shane! Great video. I'm struggling with the following: I have a column graph which shows spend against different categories (e.g. $100,000 total, of which $20,000 in total spent on category A, $30,000 in total spent on category B etc). However, each of these items in the table shows who spent the money and against what category (e.g., Dave spent $5,000 on category A, Fred spent £15,000 on category A (to make up the $20,000 total spend) etc.) I want the graph to be able to show how much Dave spent against each category by selecting a dropdown and the graph changing. Essentially, I want the chart to change when a person is selected from the dropdown box. I can't for the life of me figure this out. Any help appreciated :)

I have a question, I have an Excel based powerapp and I need to be able to copy the data from one Excel row to another excel file, one at a time, from the powerapp. Ideally that action would also delete the row from the initial excel. To be more specific, we are trying to implement this in a hospital, and the powerapp has all our active patients, and we need a button that "discharges"them, and transfers their data to another separated excel file. is this possible?
Run this task with Power Automate (BC Flow) and trigger it from PA. Power Automate has got great actions on Excel (of course these spreadsheets MUST be in OneDrive = online).

I have an excel with kms run by our colleagues, every day people post their achievements which gets into an Excel. It would be nice to show a graphic with the total amount of kms per month (bar chart for instance). My powerapps gallery uses a search box to search by location, when the user makes a selection, the graph is set up to display the location of the gallery selection, however, I'd like to graph the last 30 days of activity for that selected location. Dear Shane, I am still wondering why Powerapps team still not done much of work on Charts in Powerapps. Its really very difficult to even make and edit a simple bar chart. I think the reason the Chart Controls don't get improved is because they are already have Power BI. So they don't want to duplicate work. But I don't know. 🤷♂️
@@ShanesCows agreed with you there. They will give ou some basic functionality but for anything else PowerBI. It has been a blocker on several projects in 365 for a while now. Had to resort to going the extra mile and workarounds to display data in SharePoint and soon this way in Powerapps. I did see a demo somewhere on using SVG image files to display data so that is another option. Again way more complicated than just using PowerBI.

You would have to fix up the table to be what you want before connecting to the Pie. I am guessing it is possible but not super easy

Nope. There is no way to countrows in SharePoint past 2000 that I can thnk of.

What I'm really frustrated about is I can't seem to pull a O365 SP dropdown into the chart.
Try .value after the column name. Sorry haven’t tried that one.

Look at the GroupBy stuff I talk about at the end. What you want is possible, just a bit tricky.

Not that I know of. I think you would need Power BI

Another great video. One question from me - at the end when you added a gallery to show the department members, could you have used the DATA from the collection you created? Just wondering if it's more efficient to build the collection once and then use it in more than one way.

Hello and thank you for the inspiring videos. I am attempting to create a chart using your instructions where I want to group Departments into blocks. However, I am not getting very far as my columns are missing. It only shows "Field1, Field2, and so on. It does connect to my Sharepoint table i can see. Erlier in the app, the columns appear as they should. This is on Screen3. Google nor ChatGTP4 have given me any answers, praying for you now :)
Great Video as usual. I do have one question. I'm working from a Sharepoint online list that has a date, hours worked and a bunch of other data. I create a collection where I can GroupBy Month/Year and then sum the total number of hours worked for the month. But, some months have no hours. So, when I do the GroupBy, that month doesn't exist. When I chart the data by month, of course, that month is left out. Do you have any ideas how to get all the months to show (even when there are 0 hours worked?) (And, thanks for all your videos....without you, I would have given up long ago.)

I'm struggling with the following: I have a column graph which shows spend against different categories (e.g. $100,000 total, of which $20,000 in total spent on category A, $30,000 in total spent on category B etc). However, each of these items in the table shows who spent the money and against what category (e.g., Dave spent $5,000 on category A, Fred spent £15,000 on category A (to make up the $20,000 total spend) etc.) I want the graph to be able to show how much Dave spent against each category by selecting a dropdown and the graph changing.
Essentially, I want the chart to change when a person is selected from the dropdown box.
I can't for the life of me figure this out. Any help appreciated :)

Hi Shane! Amazing series! I have a question, I have an Excel based powerapp and I need to be able to copy the data from one Excel row to another excel file, one at a time, from the powerapp. Ideally that action would also delete the row from the initial excel.
To be more specific, we are trying to implement this in a hospital, and the powerapp has all our active patients, and we need a button that "discharges"them, and transfers their data to another separated excel file. is this possible?
Run this task with Power Automate (BC Flow) and trigger it from PA. Power Automate has got great actions on Excel (of course these spreadsheets MUST be in OneDrive = online).

You will have to find a way to filter the data you are passing to the chart based on the logged in user. Kind of like shown in this video: ua-cam.com/video/-VaADTTPYmg/v-deo.html

I have an excel with kms run by our colleagues, every day people post their achievements which gets into an Excel.
It would be nice to show a graphic with the total amount of kms per month (bar chart for instance).
Can this also be done with the sum function or is it easier to foresee a extra table in Excel with totals per month?
Great video, Shane! I need help! My SP list is to track daily measurements taken at locations. My powerapps gallery uses a search box to search by location, when the user makes a selection, the graph is set up to display the location of the gallery selection, however, I'd like to graph the last 30 days of activity for that selected location. I also have a dropdown of location and date picker on the graph screen in case the user wants to choose another location (This works on its own: Filter('Sourcename',TestLocation=Dropdown2.Selected.Value,SampleDate>=DatePicker1.SelectedDate,SampleDate

I am still wondering why Powerapps team still not done much of work on Charts in Powerapps. Its really very difficult to even make and edit a simple bar chart. There should be option to make charts as easy as we can do in PowerBI.

I think the reason the Chart Controls don't get improved is because they are already have Power BI. So they don't want to duplicate work. But I don't know. 🤷♂️
@@ShanesCows agreed with you there. They will give ou some basic functionality but for anything else PowerBI. It has been a blocker on several projects in 365 for a while now. Had to resort to going the extra mile and workarounds to display data in SharePoint and soon this way in Powerapps. I did see a demo somewhere on using SVG image files to display data so that is another option. Again way more complicated than just using PowerBI.

You can sort by column on a date column or use GroupBy to combine dates by month.

I have a question, I am using an excel as a data source, which is grouped by a column. When I retrieve the details of a selected column it returns only one row of that group. Any suggestions 🙏
Excel has to be flat data. No fancy formulas or group
