Adding on to this amazing video, I think its good to mentally stay critical while drawing. It's easy to go on to autopilot when looking at the reference, or just drawing in general. I think its really important to stay thinking and observing while you're practicing. Understand what is going on, how the lines are flowing, the proportions, etc actively while you work.
What I tend to do when I practice is I'll study the reference and start. From there I'll take brief periods of where I dont look at the reference and let my mind and hand figure the next steps on the drawing itself. So Im thinking, I'm planning, Im observing on my own drawing, and then I'll go back and compare with the reference and note where my mistakes are, why they happened, and how can I improve them.
My figure drawing, problem solving, and critical thinking have all grown from this. Its one thing to draw over and over with references, but if you dont train your brain to be able to figure out the drawings, the growth will be significantly slower and you wont retain as much.
Best of luck, my fellow art nerds!
Well explained dude!
cannot agree more
Personally i like to relax while drawing and or making art. For me what you described is the absolute last way i want to handle and think about art. Art for me is not perfection or quick improvements. Art to me is a way to relax and express myself. Im definitely not judging your methods, i just wanted to point out that your methods are not right for everyone. Someone who critically thinks while drawing wont necessarily improve faster then someone who doesn't. Everyone has there own way of doing things. Art is so unique and vast that there are no indefinite techniques that will just work for everyone. Personally the way you described art and drawing sounds like a chore and if i thought that way it would subsequently make me treat my art like work which would lead to me despising my own art wich is the last thing i want in life. I escape work and life and stress by creating art. I don't want to come home from work just to bust out my pencil and paper and.... Work some more😂
@@jayshirley8274 hahaha that's definitely fair! I'm really happy you commented cause I was just having a discussion with my sister about this. My way of doing art is definitely different and when I went to school, we were always taught that we had to draw and study with structure. The mindset of " yeah, go off and have fun with art, but fall back on your fundamentals to carry you through."
Anyways, the reason I'm happy that you commented with such a contrast to my style of art is because it now covers a completely different perspective than my own and it can reach so many more people if they stumble across both of our posts. It's another way for others to relate to!
I definitely think our goals for art are different: self expression vs commercialized art. When I was in school, they talked about the differences between commercial art vs fine art and I think that concept is kind of similar to our different takes in art. For me and my goal as a commercial artist requires me to create art not for self expression but for design and products and that requires that critical thinking and removing your ownself from the picture (lmao I can feel you cringing at that 😂) and fine arts is more of open interpretation where it's exploring art, self expression, what does art mean to you and the whole shabang that you could probably explain better than I can hahaha.
So yes, even though I can't relate to your art, I do agree with your way of doing things, and it is definitely beautiful and also the right way to go about learning as well-- it's just another lense of looking at things!
(Side tangent: my ex was an amazing painter and I remember our first conversation about it. I was talking about understanding the physics of light and how it's interpreted to understanding how colors work when it comes to painting and she was like, "oh I just chose this color cause it feels nice" and my expression was "🤯")
Anyways, nice meeting you, Jay, and best of luck with your art!
Then how are you supposed to concentrate when you only have five minutes to do anything?
Timed drawing stresses me out too much for me to even start.
This is like a premium art calss, but for free. Love it
Thanks a lot I'm glad you enjoy it!
Yassss ikr
Yup
UA-cam can be great sometimes
Tons like those on yt. U just have too spend time on searching
That sphere *inside the box* was a game changer. That box makes such a difference in my ability to breakdown what I see in my head. Thanks for the AMAZING tutorial! Subscribed!
Dude you turned a 3-10 min excersize into a 2 1/2 long lesson.. Tutorial.
I love it. Everything thruroughly explained while keeping the viewer's full attention. I've learned a ton more than faces here man. Thank You!
I love your voice so much, the only reason why I could pay attention to this so long was because you’re such a good teacher to low energy people. High energy teachers exhaust me really quickly and give me so much info at once that I don’t remember any of it. this was really calm and slow so I actually had time to try and understand the information and think about it critically
I'm only around halfway through so far, but have already seen an incredible amount of progress after just 1h 15mins of studying with you! My head construction is just so much faster and more efficient now, and I'm already able to omit certain elements from the Loomis method for a much quicker result. It's great because otherwise I'd be stuck with the Loomis construction, which I was never really comfortable with using in the first place due to how rigid it is (which actually ended up making my head drawings worse). I think it was the visualising the head as a box that really made something click into place.
Thank you so so much for this video :D
This is so valuable to me man... Not the first time I say it and not the last, but you're a lifesaver Reinaldo
this really helped with my art for portraits. Normally when I draw people somethings off like its too wide or just doesn't look human at all. Now in my sketchbook it look like I'm a much older person than when I last drew someone. And also the process is exciting when watching turn for a block to an actual person.
always fantastic Reiq! thank you for sharing your knowledge! I usually have you on in the background while i work! ✌
It’s so crazy ur first little talk about faces being boxes and making construction lines based off of the side of the head just unlocked something in my brain! I’ve just been copying what I see for the longest time but this actually makes SENSE! I managed to finish most of those 3 minute heads within the time limit and they don’t look too bad either! Thanks for the help!!!
Thanks for taking the time to do these classes! Much appreciated!
Glad you like them!
Reiq, thank you so much for your tutorials, I feel like a kid in a candy store!!

Watching you draw is inspirational and mesmerizing
It is so nice listening, watching , learning from you as you sometimes may struggle pronouncing words...it just makes you REAL...Authentic. You go out of your way to teach us in your own beautiful style! I’m 51, I’ve been loving art, drawing since I can remember...at least 5 yo. Today I’m still learning (self taught) with so much more to learn still. Everyday is a learning day! You are appreciated! Thank you for sharing the love~ The Love of ART~* 🎨🎨🖌✒️🖋✏️🖍🖊💜💜💜 🌮
this has actually made me better, i'm actually seeing improvement, in my drawing skills, thank you, this is what i needed, i'm not so good with just drawing by myself, i'm also not confident enough or try to challenge myself to draw in more angles
I hope you continue to do these, they are great!

I'm so glad!
This are really the best videos to learn. Please more. Please.
I really got to learn so much from your video tutorial,
Brilliant artwork and so well made, very nice and big big like, keep them rolling in and have safe and wonderful day.
Perspective really pulls all you learn together
I started off drawing realistic characters (My heart Actually wanted to draw anime characters from the start) and let me tell you... transitioning to anime characters was super hard for me. For example the cheek bone in realstic charcaters is higher than the cheek bone in anime characters. So I. basically had to re learn the head but anime perspective . REIQ was not lying when he said thats why its so simple yet so diffuclt to draw anime characters. But thats the advice I got from every artist who drew anime. They always told me start from realistic and once you get a good enough grasp, go ahead and start anime
This is brilliant ! Thank you for sharing & explaining so well 👍🏼.
Dude you actually helped me to draw a face. I have been trying since this is my first year of drawing. I wanna thank you man!

Just pointing out one random thing.

I'm not sure if you can speak Italian, but the way to you sayd the words and names was really grate
awesome job!
Me and my friend fell asleep before even tapping on the video and I realised the video played for 1 hour and 35 minutes explains why my iPad is on 58%
Hi, REIQ! Thanks for the drawalong! Can you try to not zoom and pan the screen around with your fingers once you're done drawing and are just thinking aloud? I quickly repeat your sketches in between topics, so it can be frustrating if the screen bounces around and away from the sketches, e.g., 25:30
Noted!
I want MOAR like this, I love it! I mean I love every video you make, but head drawings are my weak spot ;w;
Está genial cómo explicas!!! todavía no domino muy bien el inglés, pero estuvo genial!!!!
