You might be able to coax a bit more friction out of it if you put some small wheels (with suspension) on it, max out the friction and lock the breaks.

Part of me has to wonder if landing gears could somehow be utilized to give walkers better grip during their walk cycle. Seems like the main problem for most walkers is that the "feet" tend to slide instead of pulling the body forward.

That, and gravity in space engineers is kind of floaty even on the earthlike planet. small grid and in some cases large grids tend to "bounce" a bit with each step. If grids were a heavier in general, and able to fall faster, many of the mech designs we have would function better. This one impresses me, though toward the end it started bouncing a bit. The engine also only really seems to have significant friction with wheels.
