Nick is alot of things. Super talented, passionate about his game, anger challenged, but will go down in tennis history as one of the most entertaining ever.
He said after the match that he genuinely thought this was legal. I did too because people hit it around the net all the time. He must have thought the only constraint was that you can’t touch the net.
Lol, that ball was clearly out, must have been playing around. And there is no way that Nick didnt know he couldnt go to the opponents side, even i know that.
It's a kinda bizarre rule, but it's like you can only touch the ball on your side of the court. You can swing over the net to your opponents side as long as the point of contact with the ball is on your side of the court.
Kyrgos actually lost the point he had duly won, a strange application of the rules. You would think actual play was legally over when Medvedev missed the volley. More bizarre was what happened on the point before this. Kyrgos took a tumble and fell flat on his back. He took a long time to get up with Medvedev going over to check out.
she's smiling. who cares where the point went. Anyway tennismen are gentlemen I don't think any player on the other side would accept to get the point.
Yeah, you got to play the ball from your own half of the court. That is from where your feet are planted. You can lean over the net and play the ball in your opponents side of the court, as long as your feet are on your own side of the court.
Not only was the ball going out, it was also gonna land in Medvedev's side of the court. Completely dumb move from Kyrgios. You can't go over or across the net until the ball is dead. Only time you can reach over the net is if the ball bounced on your side and somehow is going back over to your opponents side (back spin) but you can't touch the net, or cross over yourself, but can reach with your arm/racket. I think Tsitsipas had to do that somewhat recently.
What's with the comments? I thought he was just kidding bc it the opponent obviously was already about to lose the point...the ball was clearly way up and heading out of bounds or not going over the net
Maybe. But you are not supposed to go beyond the net at all, even just the tip of your racquet. At least until the point is over, which would be just after it had bounced. Overall, crossing the net is not a great idea on a rational level. But what a fun!
U can clearly tell he thought he still won the point. I actually don’t see why this isn’t a winner still. Let’s say u do backspin drop shot, so the ball is coming back on to ur side after bouncing on theirs, the rules state that the other player can actually reach their racket over the net to hit a winner as long as they don’t touch the net. How does what Kyrgios did here be not allowed then. He didn’t go within Medvedevs side of the court within the lines, nor did he touch the net. Should’ve been allowed and quite frankly a silly rule. Obviously Kyrgios never needs to Play it and im sure He is the only that would ever do something like this but if we look at it in Tennis legal terms, it shoukd still be his point imo
It's not only because he stepped on the line but mainly because he made contact with the ball before it crossed to the other side, so even if he hadn't stepped on it, he would've lost the point.
It would've been legal if it bounced once on nick's side, but it didn't. It was a volley. If it did bounce once and then got back to medvedev because of retro spin or whatever then nick could've done that provided he didn't touch the net nor step on the singles court from medvedev
I don't think so, you automaticly lost the point in you play it on the other side of the net. Excepted if it was of your side first, like a drop shot that come back on the other side after the spin for example.

It’s not legal right? You can’t step on court of your opponent. You can go to the other side, but his foot touches the line of the court…
It's not only because he stepped on the line but mainly because he made contact with the ball before it crossed to the other side, so even if he hadn't stepped on it, he would've lost the point.
