Willard Stiles (Bruce Davison, Insidious: Chapter 4) is a young man with a big problem. He lives alone in a crumbling house with his ailing mother (Elsa Lanchester, Arnold, Bride of Frankenstein). His boss, Al Martin (Ernest Borgnine, Escape from New York) is a vulgar, cruel man who stole his business from Willard's father and is now working Willard to death at his factory job.
Lonely, depressed and isolated, Willard is on the verge of a breakdown when he makes a new friend: Ben, one of the many rats who inhabit his dilapidated home. Not only can Willard communicate with the rodent, but he can actually command him to do his bidding. Using Ben and his furry friends as instruments of retaliation, Willard commands his pets to carry out his vengeance…

Just had my mind blown... First... I didn't know that the Willard with Crispin Glover was a remake. I looked up this trailer, and when Willard said the line.. "Well I like myself now." @ 1:20 I thought... "where have I heard that line before...said the exact same way?" Then it hit me... Stephen King's (remake) of Kingdom Hospital. And sure enough... the actor (Bruce Davison) that plays Willard is the same actor that plays the infamous Dr. Stegman, and he repeats that line over and over. I have no doubt that this was a purposeful nod to Davison's performance in Willard. I love finding things like this... keeps life interesting lol.

Davison was SO good at playing quirky oddballs, at a time when there wasn't really much demand for this character type outside of weird cult movies like this one. If Wes Anderson had been born 30 years earlier and doing his thing in the 70s, Davison would have been one of his regular cast members. He matured into a good character actor with a very wide range, and so he stayed busy and has had a great career, but IMO he was at his peak when he played roles like this one. A modern equivalent would be someone like Paul Dano.

I was on my second tour in Vietnam in 71/72, they showed this movie in out outdoor "walk-in theater. Went back to room and went to bed. My bed had a wooden bookcase type headboard some previous occupant had made. Woke up in middle of the night to chewing noises, took flashlight and saw a vey big rat chewing on it at floor level. Briefly considered the .45 on top of the headboard but figured the other officers including the CO might be upset. Finally located big trap and got it, probably gave it to one of the "hooch maids" tht cleaned our rooms.

Willard used to air on TV late at night or on Saturday afternoons from the late '70s to the early '90s. At the time, it wasn't that old, but I guess now it is because I haven't seen it shown on TV since about 1992. I read a user review for the movie that talked about how when it was released in 1971, the user was a little girl who used to pester her older brother and his friends, always trying to hang around them, much to their annoyance. One afternoon, her brother and his friends were headed to the movies, and she insisted on going with them. He initially told her no, but their mother made him take her too. The movie they went to see was none other than Willard. Karma. She regretted insisting on tagging along with them that day...
