I’be been looking for a channel like this. I think some people are under the false assumption that all 4K releases are created equal. In some cases your probably better off sticking with your Blu-ray copy. Kind of reminds me of the early days of DVD when some companies would slap on old VHS transfer on a disc and call it DVD quality. 😀
It depends on the movies. Some are fake 4k and some are real. U should stick with blu ray if the movie u want is fake 4k. But stuff like jurrasic park that uses real 4k is a most deffinatly buy. Also the dark knight too. Which was a amazing movie and filmed with imax camera.
For number one I would have also included the original Blade Runner. The transfer gives new life to the movie, and both of them are perfect companions to each other
I completely agree. Blade Runner 2049 in 4K is my favorite. I've watched it four times so far. I own quite a few 4K movies and that one is by far my favorite.
Dude Blade Runner 2049 was so great!!! Glad to see someone else that’s come to their senses pertaining to this matter- that and The Godfather Part 2 are the best two sequels of all time in my mind.
You are not alone. Not sure about Avatar, but James Cameron is supposedly working on The Abyss and True Lies for BR & 4K. No release dates for those though yet, so I suspect maybe the holidays? There are the new Avatar movies coming, so perhaps it will be released with them.
Avatar was shot digitally, and I suspect it'd be a 2k intermediate upscaled to 4k, so not true 4k... LOTR would be a massive job - they'd have to fix the green tint fuckup from the last release for starters, then probably re-work each SFX element too...costly and timely...
This list is pretty bang on the money. The Nolan films are stunning. I started my 4K collection a couple of months ago with an Oled TV and Dunkirk, Dark Knight and Interstellar are all top picks for sure. BR2049 and the OG Blade Runner are also winners. Great list.
I think you should NOT have discs without Dolby Atmos or Dts X or Auro3d on your Top 10 discs list, because it should be the best picture AND sound combined.
Love the enthusiasm and depth of knowledge on display here. Very well presented. You know the framing issue...but for me, the content and presentation well and truly overcomes that small gripe.
Oddly enough, I had the exact opposite experience with Ghost In The Shell 2017; saw it in cinemas and it instantly became one of my favourite sci-fi releases of the decade, and I was so hyped to see it on my 4K TV-while it wasn’t a bad disc, it never had that ‘wow, *that* looked worth the 4K disc’ moment. Most of it looked like what I could’ve seen on standard Blu-Ray, spare the graveyard scene towards the end. So for me, 9+/10 movie, maybe 6.5/10 4K disc. Ah well. Xb And happy Christmas from the future! :b
My top ten so far (no order) Thor ragnarok Deadpool Murder on Orient Express Bladerunner 2049 Pacific Rim Logan John Wick 1 / 2 Kong Skull Island Sicario All three Star Trek movies
I'm watching this at the beginning of 2021 and I was thinking "Passengers" was a good early 4K disc and lo and behold it's on your list! And I actually liked the movie. I think it's under-rated.And Arrival is a great, great sci-fi movie and I love the 4K version. The critics said this wasn't a great 4K release because of the muted colors and limited color pallet but I argue it's better in 4K which will give you greater variations in the blues and grays.
Nice top 10! Some of your movies i got, too. But for me is the best 4k Disc Blade Runner 1. Absolutely. After this one is groundhog day. thanks for your great content!
My Top 10 1. The Green Mile 2.The Shining 3. Jaws 4. Casino 5. Saving Private Ryan 6. Alien 7. Wizard Of Oz 8. Lock Up 9. Halloween ( original) 10. 13 Hours

Ha, I did start with Bladerunner 2049. Haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I know it didn't do too well at the box office, so I wanted to support it by buying it day one, and I wanted the highest quality available. I didn't even have a 4k blu ray player yet.
On a similar note to planet earth 2 is Earth : One amazing day. It contains some footage from the planet earth series and is a single feature length programme and well worth a look.
Enjoy your top ten picks. I don't have the Blade Runner 2049 on 4K yet, I have it on bluray but I haven't seen it. As I recall when I started collecting 4K movies the first 3 that I bought were, Battleship, Cabin In The Woods and Star Trek. One of the movies that I enjoy a lot on 4K was The Gods Of Egypt. Would love to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture on 4K. On the scary genre Train To Busan and The Autopsy of Jane Doe.
Here's a simple guide: • Buy 4K discs with an amazing color palette • Look for the 4K 'Dynamic Range'... that shows off the spectacular colors • And stay away from the Romance movies and 'most' Comedies, that are live action (because the comedies that are animated are a much better incentive to purchase on 4K) [CAVEAT] - Just your regular Comedies and Romance kinds of movies really don't show off anything dazzling to warrant you buying those types on 4K, simply because 'comedies' and 'romance' movies will look the same - if not better - on a 1080p Standard Blu Ray disc ... just saying. Sometimes those comedies and romance ones somehow look degraded when upscaled to 4K. Standard Blu-Ray will then have better compression so it tends to look sharper and crisp. Again. You can argue that it depends on how old the comedies and romance films are for when they get upscaled. 🤷♂️💯 -- LIST OF 4K WORTHY MOVIES -- • every David Fincher film • all Christopher Nolan films (especially Inception, Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar and Dunkirk) • American Psycho • The Lego Movie • Blade Runner • Blade Runner: 2049 • The John Wick films • Mad Max: Fury Road • The Terminator and T2: Judgement Day • The Revenant • Saving Private Ryan • any Marvel movie • Joss Whedon's - Serenity (the Firefly movie) • Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse • any Mission Impossible movie (especially the last 3) • and all Pixar movies or the ones that are available
Looking forward to a splendid ENTER THE DRAGON 4k release. Had it on Super 8mm, VHS tape, DVD, Bluray. Soon would be good for the greatest film ever made.
wow I am totally excited to hear that Blade Runner 2049 is on your top 4K Bluray disc....I'm thinking of buying the regular bluray for Blade Runner 2049, but now will definetly buy this 4K version instead.....:)

It's not a 4k release but its my favorite blu ray in my collection, Its the Taxi Driver digibook, its my favorite movie of all time and this blu ray is perfect, and the bonus matirial is amazing.
I just purchased an Epson 5050 E-shift 4K projector, it does up convert Blu-ray to 4K, so is it worth purchasing 4K disks, or will I end up with the same image ?
Nice countdown. I'm actually new to the 4k lifestyle, so much that I preordered the new 2018 Samsung 65 qled... so these last couple months been stacking up some 4k blu-rays. I'll definitely refer to this list when i continue building my collection. Surprised the Revenant didn't make the list. I heard Sully is an incredible reference disc also. Thanks for the post.
For me a 4k "top 10" MUST HAVE..a noteworthy story/acting, near Ref Quality a/v or better yet RQ demo worthy a/v worthy and there MUST be either Dolby Atmos or DTS-X (not too many 4k films using DTS-X...has this format gone by the wayside? Gotta wonder). Subscribed. I like your personal commentary. Talking about some background or info not usually mentioned. I wanted badly to buy the Dark Knight movies on 4k. Wiling to double dip. But since there is no Atmos...PASS. Unfortunately Nolan doesn't believe in Atmos.
Thnx for this might check out Planet Earth 2 and the Dark knight. Just want to add , Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom are great 4ks too I own Blade Runner 2049 and Passengers 4k. I agree they are great 4k movies but my favourite is Guardians of Galaxy 2. They look amazing in 4k. I believe they were also shot in 4k!
There’s now a John Wick Chapters 1-3 4K Blu-ray. Is it safe to assume it’s the same transfers on the first two releases? I just saw a Steelbook John Wick Triple Feature, just wondering if these are all of equal viewing quality.
I wasn't aware nior versions of films was a thing. Hearing that I immediately think of Stephan King's The Mist and how great that would look in HDR nior.
As you were explaining in one of your videos the difference as to why the older movie transfer look so good on 4K one of my favorite war movie that I would love to see on 4K is The Guns Of Navarone.
Planet Earth Two is by far the best looking HDR disk out there. (You need a real HDR TV, while all these new 4K TVs can decode an HDR signal, most are not showing HDR in a way that is distinguishable from SDR) Don’t really care about 4K, it’s just that HDR is usually only attracted to 4K, in fact, HDR has to be attached to 4K. All UHD BluRay disks are HDR, some even HDR Dolby, which you need a Dolby player and TV of course. Planet Earth 2 is not a movie, it’s a documentary, but this is the disk I grab to show off my Sony Z9D, which yes, is a real HDR TV, still the best HDR TV ever made. Looking at you OLEDs, you don’t get bright enough for amazing HDR highlights.
Is Arrival really that much better in 4K HDR? Never seen it yet and just bought the BluRay. I only buy movies on 4K HDR that are either MCU movies or movies I really think are worth it for HDR. I haven’t even taken the plastic wrap off yet so I can still return it. Obviously I didn’t think this movie was worth HDR, but I see it on your list here.
Love your reviews. What I find annoying is in the UK you don't get the digital copy with any movies now except the odd one or two. Not that it is that important but it is nice to have for if you are away or travelling, etc. Just an example of how the movie studios treat the american consumer different to the UK
They need to fix T2 (need a director's cut without any DNR) and also release The Terminator, Aliens and Robocop. But both blu-rays are still fantastic!
Greetings from UNITED KINGDOM.......I only have Ten 4K's..........3,200 Blu Rays..........356 Dvds............77 HD DVD...........And 22 VHS, with only 10 4K titles I have seen what it can do, AMAZING for NEW movies, OKAY for older titles, some are HIT & MISS, I had to buy some old ones though like T2, PREDATOR, 2001 SPACE ODY, MATRIX, DIE HARD, BRAVEHEART.........they look very good.......rest of my 4k collection are newer titles.
You have an amazing background but your camera framing and video presentation is weak. You should back the camera a little bit and maybe sit on a chair or something, present your background better and stuff. Keep it up.

Keep it up.
Eren Gürsoy totally agree - I got the framing off with this video especially. Still working on this video stuff!
Ouch
Might be time for a 2019 update to this list? :)
Put your light off-axis with the camera lens and then you won't look like you have demon eyes.
