Ryan/Tobey awkward, campy, enthusiastic, overall a cult classic Jason/Andrew cooler, edgier, more mature Roger/Tom Most lighthearted and comedic. Most mainstream.

Jason Griffith used to be my favorite until recently. After listening to the fan made Sonic and Tails R series, I realized how much I loved Ryan Drummond's voice for Sonic. He has a Sonic voice that fits the carefree and cocky additude that makes the character so recognizable. Also, everyone should listen to Sonic and Tails R it's an amazing series and the characterization is much better than anything Sega has put out in the last 10 years
Sonic and Tails R and Sonic Frontiers, truly a tale of two Tails despite both sharing a similar plot point... Tails in Sonic and Tails R asks Sonic if all does is slow his big brother down as the fox cub has a crisis of confidence, but is given the chance to be brave, with him fighting Eggman alone and show he in fact a hero in his own right. Ending the radio drama with Tails standing as a true equal to Sonic, after they defeat the Doctor, as he goes off into the world to seek adventure, having earned his new found confidence for himself. Tails in Sonic Frontiers asks Sonic if he's a burden to him as the fox cub has a crisis of confidence, but is given the chance to stand on the sidelines doing nothing but complain about all he's done the past decade is stand on the sidelines doing nothing, with one pep talk from Sonic putting him right. Ending with Tails gaining a sense clarity, as he goes off into the world to find adventure, despite not really having done anything the whole game. "But he was trapped in Cyberspace!" I can already hear some saying, to which I say then maybe Sega should have made Cyberspace levels for Tails - new ones! - where he'd help Sonic uncover the mysteries of the island through the Acients memories - instead of a third trip down memory lane of Sonic's past in 11 years with copy pasted levels - and ultimately face his greatest challenge to date in his own self doubt and fear that manifested into a Shadow Self. Seriously why bring that up if they aren't going to do anything with it? Yes I suppose there is that DLC coming later this year, but if fixing Tails was so important, shouldn't Sega have done that in the main story instead? Thank the gods for Sonic and Tails R, and here's hoping that season 2 only gets better when it comes out.
@@paulgilbert5278 I can agree Drummond’s voice has aged a bit, but that’s largely because when people mock Sonic’s voice, they almost always do an exaggerated take on Drummond’s voice in SA2. The mockery and memery has detracted from it a good bit.
@@DemonDethchase SA1 did it the same "i can be my own person" shtick and they kept it around until 06 (technically unleashed too but im not so sure) but it hasnt been shown since colors' tonal shift and then forces reversed the change

@@mober7430 so if nobody wants too does that mean Jason Griffith is objectively the best man for sonic and shadow and should’ve stayed as sonic and shadow to this very day If nobody cares to change my mind why sound like you think my point of view isn’t a valid premise ?
In a lot of ways, I think Ryan Drummond's voice is the English match to Junichi. They give off similar vibes and both assume the role so effortlessly, especially in Heroes
9:14 cap jason is more iconic im hearing from him for the first time and im a huge sonic fan and hes doing the JAPANESE voice not ENGLISH voice im rlly dissapointed and regret clicking on this video you definetly deserve a dislike and i give dislikes rarely
Jason Griffith, and it makes no sense that they dropped him… He literally voices him effortlessly, while Roger you have to fight with the animation, scripting, and characterization to get him right… With Jason he just fits…
I truly think Jason is the best I might be biased because I grew up with him but he just feels like he was a perfect fit for the role! I'll say that Roger did a way better performance in Sonic Frontiers it seems that the writing and the delivery was what held him back in other games!
@@aimbot4arrowz982the issue with that is that it felt like sonics characterisation was built around Rogers voice, instead of Roger trying to sound like sonic. Sonic is a snarky sarcastic dick in boom, and that's because they're trying to make sonics character fit with Rogers voice, but ultimately it doesn't feel like sonic, it feels like a 30 year old man who is sick of being a hero
I like them all. I think each of them embody a different part of Sonic’s personality, so they all fit the role. Ryan is the energetic, adventure loving Sonic. Jason is the heroic and friendly Sonic. Roger is the cool and laid back Sonic (and Jun'ichi is all three combined). I genuinely can’t pick a favourite because I think they all embody the character for me
To me, Ryan and Jason reflect the edgy, snarky, cocky, adventure loving teen with an attitude that Sonic had been portrayed as by Sega in the late 90s to early 2000s. Sonic Boom was overlooked by many, but by Forces, and then Frontiers, the series seemed to have changed to be more dark and a bit serious. Considering this tonal sift, Rorger fit perfectly. He reflects a more mature Sonic, who at this point, has become a seasoned hero. But still has that attitude.
Now for Shadow on the other hand, Jason is easily the best pick. I honestly would have been happy if they'd kept Jason as Shadow even if they still replaced him for Sonic
As a millennial, I played games that had all three voices of Sonic. Each voice actor gave a different twist. Yet Roger definitely gives off an older teen vibe.
Does he...? He sounds more like a 30 something out of touch millennial to me. Jason Griffith was more of an older teen, as he usually played the role of the older brother to characters like Tails or Chip. Roger Sonic talks to his "friends" like they interact once every few months. They do not come across as friends at all
@@RenRen-m9u That last part is purely the script, not the voice actor. The script wouldn't suddenly change if Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffith or even Jaleel White replaced Roger Craig Smith as the voice. He's still be talking to them as though "like they interact once every few months" regardless.
@@spopovichancheio891 its true because his not gonna continue with the deep voice because its hard for him he can't change voice direction for too long he sounds older not teenager
@@wahabschannel2453 and does that justify you wishing death on a voice actor because you don't think his voice fits a fictional anthropomorphic hedgehog?
Junichi Kanemaru is by far my favorite Sonic voice actor, and Jason Griffith is probably my second favorite. I'm glad you showed love to Kanemaru as I was expecting him to get brushed over or forgotten in a video like this.
Ryan just captures the coolness of sonic better than the other two, sonic is a cool character first anf foremost. Jason sounds more light hearted and roger just sounds generic, all i hear are various miscellaneous voices from regular show whne sonic talks now. Ps. I grew up with all 3, turned 18 in 2015
Jason’s the guy who I grew up hearing, but he’s more Shadow than Sonic for me. I like the original voice actors for Sonic and Shadow objectively more, but I hold a lot of love for Jason’s performances.
Jason Griffith and Junichi Kanemaru will always be my favorite Sonic voices of all time. Some might say nostalgia has to do why people think is the best but with how good Griffith was with the character shows that he wouldn't feel out of place in the modern games and considering him doing quick little stuff for fan projects shows that he can still do the voice. Kanemaru is pretty much Charles Marinet in Japan and I'm so glad he's still doing Sonic to this day despite Sega in the west changing actors like they're clothes but the JP dub of Sonic X is what got me into Japanese voice acting and while Roger is still doing the character here and it's still not my favorite even with Frontiers, I can still switch the language to Japanese if it bothers me that much because Kanemaru never misses
Wow you summed up my thoughts pretty well I feel the same way haha. I enjoyed Jason a lot but after he was replaced and Lost World came out I changed the language to Japanese and Junichi has stuck to me ever since :)
I grew up with both Roger Craig Smith and Jason Griffith when I was young and I couldnt imagine sonic without theese 2. I never got t he chance to play adventure, adventure 2, heroes etc, So i never had the luxury of ryan drummond but I think the voice for sonic is jaleel white. He played classic sonic in The sonic OVA movie, which i watched when i was young countless times, and he is truly my version of sonic
@BenSpace Likely his performance. The OVA Sonic was really... Something... Imagine if The Itchy and Scratchy Show from The Simpsons was made into a standalone series; his voice gave of those kinds of vibes. (Plus a heck ton of helium). It's like Sonic's Schoolhouse was the only reference material they gave him lmao.
@@BestGirlsBiggestFan Ah, okay. I thought maybe they meant something regarding the actor themselves since I’m unfamiliar with them. I actually really like the OVA’s take for all the voices they gave to the characters. It’s different than usual but it honestly fits that version of Sonic so well that I’m a fan of it lol.
Ryan is the best sonic voice actor, but Jason is my favorite. I have warm memories with Jason, but Ryan captivated the voice for sonic. His vocal attitude fits the character perfectly.
I'm personally borderline between Jason Griffith and Roger Smith; I was born in 2003 so in a weird way, I grew up with both of them and I think they're both great! (Especially since Ive recently gotten into Sonic Unleashed)
I grew up with Sonic, having been born in 1990 and my favorite VA for the Blue Blur is Roger, hands down. There's just something so captivating about his portrayal. And while I agree he doesn't exactly sound like a teenager, neither do Ryan or Jason's versions imo.
THANK YOU. I understand some teenage boys do sound like adults but for a usual teenage boy’s voice the only adult official Sonic VA that sounds the closest to it imo is Deven Mack. That’s mostly because he reminds me of my classmates at high school, but I think he sounds like an actual child compared to even Ben as Movie!Sonic. Deven just has that soft but harsh youthfulness and energy to his Sonic voice. Every other VA sound like Sonic’s a very energetic 20 to 30 year old for most the most part. I still enjoy all of their takes on the character. Them not sounding like a teenager doesn’t make them any less Sonic. You don’t have to sound like a teenager to be a GREAT Sonic. As long as it sticks to his core voice (which all of these VAs do in some capacity imo) should be all that matters. Sorry, for the long tangent. 😅
He only got a few short lines, but I really liked Masato Nishimura's take on Sonic in CD Also the consistency with Sonic's Japanese voice can almost certainly be attributed to voice acting being treated with a lot more respect in Japan. With long running series generally voice actors only get replaced if something happens to them and they're unable to continue voicing their characters, so you end up with people like Junichi Kanemaru, Kappei Yamaguchi, and Minami Takayama who voice their characters for years on end.
No matter what change or what anybody says Roger Craig smith's sonic voice will be my favorite there's just something about that's sound right to me he brings the snarky cool laid-back feeling that i get from sonic and i felt he was held back by bad writing and roger at peak performances he kept the deep but still upbeat voice like puyo puyo Tetris 2,boom,TSR and rise of the wisps are some of his best and with good writing he can be serious as well like with frontiers and while ryan is a close second i just tend to connect to Roger's take on sonic more. Roger took what i like about Jason and Ryan and not only made it his own but better in some ways obviously it's not perfect but tbh no sonic va was but roger i feel was the most consistent because his voice never really changed to much until frontiers and I grew up with Roger's sonic voice but overall i like the others but roger is my favorite can't change my mind.
@@MESHALGAMEZ Jason Griffith was terrible in his earlier outings as the character. He improved a lot overtime. I think Roger is overall just a better VA.
just sounds like i’m listening to an old man do his own dubbing of lines. i played colors for the first time when i was 11, now i’m 23 and i still cringe when i hear his voice. will never get used to his bored frat guy voice.
Although Sega Superstars was the last game to have Ryan in general, the last mainline game was actually Sonic Advance 3, and the ending of that game really just goes to show that it was the end of the Adventure era
Man I still remember my first time hearing Sonics voice in Japanese, messing around in the settings on Sonic heroes one day. Had to replay the whole game like that lol
Ryan Drummond for sure. He was the original voice for the games and sounds the closest to Junichu. Him and the rest of the original cast was unfairly replaced b the 4kids actors around the time Shadow the Hedgehog came out. Back then virtually no one thought Jason was better. Jason did improve over time but he just doesnt have that same energy that Ryan has and has a weird up and down tone and puts strange emphasis on random words.
I always prefered Ryan. I also felt like him and David Humphrey didn't stick around long enough for us to make a fair comparison. Kinda wish we would get to have them back, at least for a few more games.
Yeah they only did 3 mainline games and a couple of spin offs with limited lines. I'll say I really enjoyed them in adventure and even moreso in heroes even if the writing wasn't doing them and favors haha. I will say though "GET OUT YOU UGLY PROTOTYPE!" Has a special place in my heart
AYO love your videos dawg never thought I'd see you in the comment section of one of my videos haha. Also you right ain't no one beating him in the games!
Jaleel White has always been the best sonic voice actor and I wish so bad he could've came back in Sonic Generations to voice classic sonic Granted, I don't know if he could still do the voice since im pretty sure he was real young when he voiced in the cartoons, but that has always been classic sonic's voice to me. Sonic from the OVA could've worked too.
He did turn down a classic sonic role for generations I forget the exact reasons but I'll cover it in my follow up video. I'm pretty sure he can still do his Sonic voice considering he can still do his Steve Erkel impression in the Scooby Doo crossover a few years back lol
Jason just sounds so cool as Sonic and Shadow. I actually really like Ryan and Roger too but they don’t compare to Jason. Roger actually did a really good job in Frontiers. Also Sega is the epitome of bad decision making.
I agree and still think Jason's Shadow voice is unmatched in English! Roger also really steeped it up in frontiers I think he made a fan out of me with his performance! Also Sega do be kind of cheeks sometimes 😅
Ngl Roger sound depressing af in frontiers Definitely better than the 2010s But still pretty depressing Edit: I'm not saying he did BAD by any means infact he definitely alot better here and even enjoyable at many points But in a big chunk of the game and ESPECIALLY the first island of the game he was pretty depressing But that's literally just my opinion
Honestly, i love them all. Ryan Drummond Is while sonic is still an early teenager, noticeable by his significantly higher voice. Jason Griffith was that weird point in time where your voice gets deeper for a year or two due to puberty, showing how sonic has aged. Roger Craig Smith then goes to sonics late teens where his voice gets high again before going back to deep in sonic frontiers, as Sonic's vocal cords have fully developed. I'm thinking way too hard about this aren't I.
Ben Schwartz is my favorite Sonic voice personally. 😎 But out of the games, I think Drummond really had the most solid and consistent of the English voice for Sonic, his range was perfect. He could handle the serious, and more calm lines, but immediately kick into high-octane Sonic, and it sounded like the same character no matter what he was doing. It is such a shame that he only voiced Sonic for 5 years, absolutely breaks my heart. Griffith is fantastic in Unleashed, but outside of that game, he just can't break out of the same cadence he gives to the majority of his lines. He overemphasizes action words, which makes listening to his lines feel like stop and go traffic. But, he does give the most energy to his deliveries. Even if I think it's too much, I understand why others like that about him. By the time Unleashed came around, he was finally starting to sound like both a conversational buddy, and a being of pure youthful energy. I was sad to see him go, because he was finally starting to work out all of the kinks in his portrayal. Smith's take is like a cuddly teddy bear more than an youthful teen with an edge. It works for the deadpan deliveries in the Sonic Boom TV show, but not anywhere else. In Frontiers, they finally found a way to have him portray the character in a way that made sense. He serves as the main source of healing, inspiration, and encouragement throughout the story of Frontiers, and it fits that "teddy bear" voice for him perfectly. In fact, he took it a step further and lowered his voice, which only added to this and it really worked for me. Overall, there hasn't really been a bad voice for Sonic. While I'm with you that Smith is my least favorite of the three, I'm glad he's sticking with the character and improving his performance while the writing for him also continues to improve.
@@thefastcommenter7774r they just have an opinion on how they view the character, age doesn’t have much to do with it. That’s like me saying you only like the older Va’s because you’re old, when in all reality even kids who grew up with Roger go back and enjoy the older voices more
@thefastcommenter7774 Well, I hope you read the rest of the comment, cause that wasn't the main point, just an aside. I'm a 90s kid and was absolutely obsessed with Sonic LOL Ben Schwartz just conveys the quintessential Sonic in his tone: pure of heart and completely sincere, as well as quick and snarky without being overly demeaning, and it's carried through his warmer tone. He doesn't get the best lines, but it doesn't matter since his voice carries most of it. Plus, he doesn't sound like any other Sonic, gets extra bonus points for that. I really like him and think he brings a lot to the character.
oddly, i like roger the best. not just with the frontiers voice direction, either, but as a whole. it just sounds more... right to me? i mean, i was born in 2009, and roger started voicing him in 2010, so i have kinda been growing up with him, but idk. i just like rogers best
I always feel like the argument that Sonic is a kid and shouldn't sound deep has always been a little...iffy to me. Maybe classic or Adventure Sonic work as a 15 year old, but man, I always prefered him having a more deep voice. People never really understand that, while he's cocky and a little arrogant, he's one of the most compassionate and wise characters in gaming. He's always building up people aroujd him and helping them out anyway he can. And personally, I loved seeing how he developed into this. He started out with Ryan's more excitable hyped voice, to really begin mellowing out with Jason, before finally (skipping every modern game except Frontiers lol) he just sounds really mature. And i like that- It feels like he grew up with me! And honestly, i felt kinda annoyed watching colors and stuff because it's like they forced him to be hyper and annoying again. But i liked it more when he was the way we see him in Frontiers, or even Boom/Forces was fine. Way I see it, I /vastly/ prefer Jason and Roger to Ryan, and nothing against Ryan, I just prefer hearing what Sonic turned into more than the higher tone he used to have. Though, I still really like his older work, and even his current work too in stuff like Sonic R! Idk, am I alone in this? I kinda stopped digging the idea that Sonic is some 15 year old kid-hero outside of the Sonic movie and older Adventure games.b
Ryan was my first introduction to Sonic in the Sonic Heroes game on the classic Xbox console then I grew up with Jason in my teens and finally with Roger Craig Smith in my adulthood and all three of them have done a fantastic job of voicing Sonic in their own unique ways thanks for sharing this great video of my favorite video game character 👍❤️
Although I grew up with Ryan in Heroes, for me Jason Griffith is my all time favorite Sonic buuut, I also REALLY love Masami Kikuchi as Sonic (he’s from the OVA). Kanemaru is my 3rd favorite and Ryan is 4th. Masami Kikuchi for me is constantly fighting Jason Griffith for my top spot. Kikuchi is the voice I original thought of when finding out Sonic was a JP character and hearing him for the first time felt awesome
All of them are good, no questions Ryan laid the foundation for how Sonic should sound like Jason masters how Sonic should sound like Roger, while being the weakest of the trio, definitely fits, and does something new with the character
as a kid i personally never noticed more than one guy voiced sonic until someone blurted out multiple names in vr chat when i did my Roger Craig impression
Roger craig smith is the most appreciated VA for Sonic, I grew up with him since 2010's. The reason why I don't like Jason griffith's sonic voice is because he sounds like goku for the most part is something little bit annoying, after I thought he's good in unleashed and black knight. So in my opinion for roger had potential very experience under voice acting sonic, I'm glad he sounds natural and less energy so close to Jason in frontiers. Either way I might prefer his shadow voice is the best by Jason besides sonic.
Jason Griffith. He's the best voice actor as I believe he truly fits Sonic. While Ryan is perfect in portraying the energetic side of Sonic, Jason's sonic voice covers everything else, such as Sonic's sombre/mellowed out side, and emotional side of Sonic. Jason's take to Sonic has more to often and his voice the best to hear of the bunch. No idea why they randomly dropped Jason when he perfected the Sonic voice in Unleashed/Black Knight.
@@ayrtonjoga nope, he sounds natural very less deeper so close to Jason but he's not like imitating Jason griffith all the time, that'll be annoying af, after all he's a appreciated VA for sonic
Junichi. He's the OG Sonic, has voiced him since Adventure, and knows the character best. During the production of Wreck it Ralph, Junichi actually gave them pointers on Sonic's character. "He wouldn't say this, he would be more like this."
This is an unpopular opinion, but my favorite has to be Jaleel White. He really gives of the energy and attitude that Sonic had in that era. From the games,Jason Griffith and Jun'ichi Kanumaru. I can even do impressions of Jason Griffith and Jaleel White(and some what of a Jun'ichi impression)!
Kanemaru-san is definetly my favorite Sonic voice actor, not only due to consistency, but also because he is genuinely a really good voice for Sonic and a good Voice Actor, he makes Sonic sounds like a teenager, he also manages to make Sonic sound cool, cute, he has a unique charm, and as a cherry on the top, his english lines makes Sonic so charming and unique Jason is definetly my favorite ENGLISH Sonic voice actor, but I'm unsure if I would say he is my second favorite Sonic voice actor, he is definetly 3rd for sure and could be the 2nd one, I think, but I love a certain Sonic voice a lot too... Manolo Rey, Sonic's Brazillian Portuguese voice, just like Kanemaru, he has been consistent for so many years that is hard to hear Sonic with another voice in Brazillian Portuguese, he voice acted Sonic in EVERY SINGLE SHOW Sonic had (excluding Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog), he voice acted Sonic in Sonic SatAM, in Sonic Underground, Sonic X, Sonic Boom, Sonic Prime, in Sonic's OK KO Crossover episod, in both Sonic Live action Movies, HE EVEN VOICE ACTED UGLY SONIC IN THE CHIP N' DALE MOVIE AND SONIC'S PARODY APPARENCE IN MAD Sadly he wasn't Sonic in SOME projects, most notably in Wreck it Ralph 1 and 2, because the Voice acting studio was in "São Paulo" for those movies, unlike the others that were made in "Rio de Janeiro" where Manolo lives and usually voice acts Sonic in, some people also kinda prefers Fábio Lucindo's voice for Sonic because it's a lot more "mature" but I think Manolo showed that he can also do a more deep voice for him just like he did in Sonic Boom, it's a lot more deeper than the one he did in Sonic X, and even if I like Fábio's voice, I don't see PT-BR Sonic without Manolo Rey Oh, Manolo didn't used to voice Sonic in Adventures of Sonic because he was voice acted by Tatá Guarnieri, that also used to voice Sonic in the commercials at the time and even voice acted him in SatAM and Underground, but Manolo was casted for Sonic in the redubs of both of those shows, but never was casted in any of the AoStH's redubs
Sega wanting Sonic to sound more mature makes sense to me. No one is forever a teenager so eventually Sonic has to grow up and having different voice actors can definitely convey that. And Frontiers does it best with having Roger do a deeper take on Sonic's voice. Sonic can't be a teen forever. I grew up with Jason and would love for him to reprise the role, but Roger's deeper Sonic voice from Frontiers just felt earned. Along with Ian Flynn's writing, I think Sega can do a lot of good for the hedgehog in terms of his voice and how it reflects the tone of a game. That has been my contribution to this 2 year old discussion. Thank you.
Here’s the thing. SEGA should specify sonic’s age and details instead of retconning him and the rest of the cast over and over again. For example, classic sonic and modern sonic cannot be 1metre tall at the same time, even though classic is significantly shorter. And even though sonic did mature in frontiers, that maturity went down the drain in the following twitter takeover.
I have a feeling that Roger is going to absolutely nail the next Sonic game He was dealt with bad writing and had to deal with multiple tonal shifts between boom and frontiers
Ryan has a "look at me I'm cool" voice, Jason has a voice that sounds out place for Sonic and Roger just make Sonic sound like he went through puberty 4 times.
Roger Craig Smith is my favorite voice actor for Sonic. Sure, I knew Jason Griffin as Sonic longer, but considering Sonic Generations was my first Sonic game I’ve ever owned I just had to go with Roger. Sure, his no Ryan Drummond, but that’s what makes Roger’s Sonic unique to me.
Please no tails and knuckles ok cuz they (i think) has the va's from the games but Sonic? Nah nah nah his Voice is sick but will never fit the games's atmosphere
I don't think if might work but it's stated the Canadian by laws, either way I would like to see Ian hanlin to voice shadow in games cause he fits perfect along with Jason
Of course a weirdass like me would realize that that little "ping" in your intro is the Mega Collection Plus game unlock chime lmao, with it being my favorite childhood game and all
Ryan Drummond: Cocky and cool attitude Jason Griffith: A bit more mature version of Ryan Drummond Roger craig smith: hyperactive annoying teenager and "haha look im cool guys hahah youre such a baldy" type of impression
Roger is really good but he got even better in frontiers if you guys check frontiers he sound so good but i love all of the sonic voices equally including Japanese
Apparently 🤓“From what it seems, the voice direction opted for having Roger give a more mature performance for Sonic, given the serious tone Frontiers presents. It definitely fits thematically, but it's still hard to get used to a more adult Sonic”🤓 i don’t mind the voice it’s just that I don’t like how sonic almost sounds like he’s shadow
I grew up playing Dreamcast and have soooo much nostalgia for the Adventure games and Ryan's performance. Played Heroes quite a bit as well. That said, the answer is Jason hands down.
I gotta thank Roger Craig Smith, actually, if not for him, I would've never been inspired to play my Sonic Games in Japanese, and realize the Peak Sonic VA that is Junichi Kagemaru. All jokes aside, in terms of English VA's, For me, it's a Tie between J Griff, and Ryan Drummond, since I grew up with both.
For me- Roger Craig is Sonic's definitive voice. I just love his tone that he brings to Sonic. Whenever I picture Sonic in my mind, that's who I always hear.
If you have played Frontiers DLC 3, you may notice that during the cannon where Eggman is about to shoot Sonic to the End, Junichi is screaming so loud and his voice is awesome to make me feel that Sonic has to take so much pain in order to defeat an enemy. Which, in English version, the scene has given me vibes but not enough compared to Japanese version. I would say that those screams in Japanese may be added Junichi himself instead of the writer's request. Sometimes Japanese anime dialogues have extra content that voice actors can think of and in addition, portray his thoughts into the characters, instead of being asked to do so.
Ryan for the youthful approach, Jason for the maturity over the years, and Roger should have had his frontiers voice in colors because it felt cringe and forced( it wasn't his fault they had bad voice Direction)
"I found you faker" stays forever in my head that's my sonic voice. Now granted I grew up with the adventure era so I'm just WAY more used to it but yeah
Of the game voices, Roger Craig Smith is my favourite. Jason Griffith is my least favourite, he got better in Unleashed and Black Knight (i.e right at the end of his tenure) but for most of his run his performance just sounded hella forced to me.
UA-cam algorithm recommended me this video just because I'm on a Sonic watch binge, and I have to hand it to every voice of Sonic--I appreciate most of them. Even Martian Bruke--the VA for the Sonic OVA that I watch every now and then. Love that OVA. So in terms of my taste? Yeah. Jun'ichi is definitely my favorite Sonic of all-time. He's the reason I never have a bad time swapping English VA to Japanese for any of my video games. He's consistent, and he captures the meaning of Sonic's emotions and the overall delivery to me. Jason as a VA is definitely impressive because of his role impact of playing both Sonic and Shadow. But I grew up with Ryan, so I could say it's a tie.
When it comes to Junichi, i tend to actually listen to it upon replaying Sonic games to get a different experience and feel. Hes great. I started this habit after I got sick if hearing the same voice lines when i was 100%ing SA2B and just switched languages out of frustration. Neatless to say I discovered something truly great and freah. But my favorite sonic overall is Ryan, i feel he didn't get a chance to really evolve or change that much. SA2 is the best sounding but after listening to Sonic and Tails R on UA-cam I'm convinced he would have been such a great Sonic if he stayed.

The parallel between the two characters is intriguing

Jason Griffith used to be my favorite until recently. After listening to the fan made Sonic and Tails R series, I realized how much I loved Ryan Drummond's voice for Sonic. He has a Sonic voice that fits the carefree and cocky additude that makes the character so recognizable.
Also, everyone should listen to Sonic and Tails R it's an amazing series and the characterization is much better than anything Sega has put out in the last 10 years
Hot take but Ryan’s voice for Sonic aged a tad. Jason’s is more timeless. Roger is in between
Sonic and Tails R and Sonic Frontiers, truly a tale of two Tails despite both sharing a similar plot point...

I can agree Drummond’s voice has aged a bit, but that’s largely because when people mock Sonic’s voice, they almost always do an exaggerated take on Drummond’s voice in SA2. The mockery and memery has detracted from it a good bit.
@@DemonDethchase SA1 did it the same "i can be my own person" shtick and they kept it around until 06 (technically unleashed too but im not so sure) but it hasnt been shown since colors' tonal shift and then forces reversed the change

Ryan is the voice of my childhood. He will always be THE sonic to me
Jason Griffith, and it makes no sense that they dropped him…
He literally voices him effortlessly, while Roger you have to fight with the animation, scripting, and characterization to get him right…
With Jason he just fits…
I hope now that they have competent writers, they’ll recognize how difficult it is to work with a deeper voice…
I truly think Jason is the best I might be biased because I grew up with him but he just feels like he was a perfect fit for the role! I'll say that Roger did a way better performance in Sonic Frontiers it seems that the writing and the delivery was what held him back in other games!
@@LuxeCruxit was definitely the writing. in sonic boom, where he's intentionally ironic and in a non-serious environment, it works better.
@@aimbot4arrowz982the issue with that is that it felt like sonics characterisation was built around Rogers voice, instead of Roger trying to sound like sonic. Sonic is a snarky sarcastic dick in boom, and that's because they're trying to make sonics character fit with Rogers voice, but ultimately it doesn't feel like sonic, it feels like a 30 year old man who is sick of being a hero
the contract with 4kids expired in 2010
I like them all.

Ps. I grew up with all 3, turned 18 in 2015
Ryan will always be my Sonic, plus adventure 1 and 2 are my favorite sonic games.
Jason’s the guy who I grew up hearing, but he’s more Shadow than Sonic for me. I like the original voice actors for Sonic and Shadow objectively more, but I hold a lot of love for Jason’s performances.
Yeah I just love the Adventure style voice over the A.C. 2 style voices
Very valid opinion on both! Ryan's a solid VA and the adventure games are great!

Actually Jaleel voiced in the DiC cartoons. The one who voiced Sonic in the OVA was Martin Burke. Oh and Martin is terrible, lol.
@TheTrollingPokémon247Do you mean that he’s a terrible person? Or his voice for Sonic is terrible? I have no idea who he is so I’m genuinely curious.

Ryan is the best sonic voice actor, but Jason is my favorite. I have warm memories with Jason, but Ryan captivated the voice for sonic. His vocal attitude fits the character perfectly.
Why not have a tie between them?
Jason will always be my favorite. He is sonic to me. I binge watched all the sonic game cutscenes in 06 and unleashed, so I have a major bies.

Roger Craig Smith take for Sonic is that sonic as a character is older in frontiers in my head, Canon
He only got a few short lines, but I really liked Masato Nishimura's take on Sonic in CD
Also the consistency with Sonic's Japanese voice can almost certainly be attributed to voice acting being treated with a lot more respect in Japan.

Although Sega Superstars was the last game to have Ryan in general, the last mainline game was actually Sonic Advance 3, and the ending of that game really just goes to show that it was the end of the Adventure era
It really was a sweet way to end the adventure era and the advance series as well!

Ryan Drummond for sure.
He was the original voice for the games and sounds the closest to Junichu. Him and the rest of the original cast was unfairly replaced b the 4kids actors around the time Shadow the Hedgehog came out.
Back then virtually no one thought Jason was better.
Jason did improve over time but he just doesnt have that same energy that Ryan has and has a weird up and down tone and puts strange emphasis on random words.
lol Jason enunciates the end of every word and makes his voice an octave or two higher…
Ryan = Teenage Sonic
Jason = Young Adult Sonic
Rodger = Mature Adult Sonic
I always prefered Ryan. I also felt like him and David Humphrey didn't stick around long enough for us to make a fair comparison.

Ryan Drummond's my favorite I liked him since I first heard him in Sonic Adventure 2.
But out of the games, I think Drummond really had the most solid and consistent of the English voice for Sonic, his range was perfect.
“Ben Schwartz is my favorite Sonic voice” Tells me you are probably either a new sonic fan or a young one lol

@thefastcommenter7774 Well, I hope you read the rest of the comment, cause that wasn't the main point, just an aside. I'm a 90s kid and was absolutely obsessed with Sonic LOL
Ben Schwartz just conveys the quintessential Sonic in his tone: pure of heart and completely sincere, as well as quick and snarky without being overly demeaning, and it's carried through his warmer tone. He doesn't get the best lines, but it doesn't matter since his voice carries most of it. Plus, he doesn't sound like any other Sonic, gets extra bonus points for that. Short answer:
Ben Schwartz
And i like that-
It feels like he grew up with me!
My favourite is Devin Mack from sonic prime, he is a mix of all the best things from all Ryan, Jason and Roger. Like the absolute perfect mix.

Roger Craig Smith's voice is the best! And tbh, Sonic sounds almost exactly like he did in 1998.
All of them are good, no questions
Ryan laid the foundation for how Sonic should sound like
Jason masters how Sonic should sound like
Roger, while being the weakest of the trio, definitely fits, and does something new with the character
All of them are fantastic, but Junichi just IS Sonic in my eyes. Nobody can do Sonic justice like he can.

I think if roger's sonic, at least in frontiers, was at least 18 or older, it'd work. He captures the older yet charismatic sonic
I think in Frontiers Sonic is at least 16 though. So definitely an older teen or young adult vibe can be sensed.

Kanemaru-san is definetly my favorite Sonic voice actor, not only due to consistency, but also because he is genuinely a really good voice for Sonic and a good Voice Actor, he makes Sonic sounds like a teenager, he also manages to make Sonic sound cool, cute, he has a unique charm, and as a cherry on the top, his english lines makes Sonic so charming and unique
Jason is definetly my favorite ENGLISH Sonic voice actor, but I'm unsure if I would say he is my second favorite Sonic voice actor, he is definetly 3rd for sure and could be the 2nd one, I think, but I love a certain Sonic voice a lot too... Manolo Rey, Sonic's Brazillian Portuguese voice, just like Kanemaru, he has been consistent for so many years that is hard to hear Sonic with another voice in Brazillian Portuguese, he voice acted Sonic in EVERY SINGLE SHOW Sonic had (excluding Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog), he voice acted Sonic in Sonic SatAM, in Sonic Underground, Sonic X, Sonic Boom, Sonic Prime, in Sonic's OK KO Crossover episod, in both Sonic Live action Movies, HE EVEN VOICE ACTED UGLY SONIC IN THE CHIP N' DALE MOVIE AND SONIC'S PARODY APPARENCE IN MAD
Sadly he wasn't Sonic in SOME projects, most notably in Wreck it Ralph 1 and 2, because the Voice acting studio was in "São Paulo" for those movies, unlike the others that were made in "Rio de Janeiro" where Manolo lives and usually voice acts Sonic in, some people also kinda prefers Fábio Lucindo's voice for Sonic because it's a lot more "mature" but I think Manolo showed that he can also do a more deep voice for him just like he did in Sonic Boom, it's a lot more deeper than the one he did in Sonic X, and even if I like Fábio's voice, I don't see PT-BR Sonic without Manolo Rey
Oh, Manolo didn't used to voice Sonic in Adventures of Sonic because he was voice acted by Tatá Guarnieri, that also used to voice Sonic in the commercials at the time and even voice acted him in SatAM and Underground, but Manolo was casted for Sonic in the redubs of both of those shows, but never was casted in any of the AoStH's redubs
The best Sonic is Junichi Kanemaru. He embodies the character so perfectly that it's not even funny. Dude's been playing him since 1998.
I think Roger Craig Smith is my favorite Sonic voice actor.
Roger was really good in Sonic Frontiers
He just sounds bored to be honest, it makes sonic's voice sound deep and yea I know that's the point but it doesn't fit sonics more impatient nature
0:40 Erm akkktually he had a voice in sonic cd 1993 when you got An extra life🤓
and when he jumped off a fucking cliff cause he was bored for 3 minutes
He did say in America though
@Mystery-ri5ilyo do we have the same pfp (tho mines is zoomed in a bit)
I have a feeling that Roger is going to absolutely nail the next Sonic game
He was dealt with bad writing and had to deal with multiple tonal shifts between boom and frontiers
Imagine if actors from Sonic Prime started voicing the characters in the video games
Of course a weirdass like me would realize that that little "ping" in your intro is the Mega Collection Plus game unlock chime lmao, with it being my favorite childhood game and all
Nah that just makes you cool haha you're the first person that's noticed actually :)
Ryan Drummond: Cocky and cool attitude
Jason Griffith: A bit more mature version of Ryan Drummond
Roger craig smith: hyperactive annoying teenager and "haha look im cool guys hahah youre such a baldy" type of impression
“What do you mean by that?”
They have to hunt down the black creatures. Pretty self explanatory.
Roger is really good but he got even better in frontiers if you guys check frontiers he sound so good but i love all of the sonic voices equally including Japanese
Agreed
@@playerback7722yeah
He just made his voice deeper what’s so good about it???💀
@@john_negs7720 well cause before people hated him but now people like his new voice
@@jboyathegamer still ass he just has a deeper voice what’s so amazing about it??💀
sonic has a voice in sonic cd but only thing he talks is "YEAH"
Apparently 🤓“From what it seems, the voice direction opted for having Roger give a more mature performance for Sonic, given the serious tone Frontiers presents. It definitely fits thematically, but it's still hard to get used to a more adult Sonic”🤓
i don’t mind the voice it’s just that I don’t like how sonic almost sounds like he’s shadow
Honestly since the characters are supposed to be older now it makes more sense that Roger does a more mature portrayal and I'm all for it!
@@LuxeCrux touché
Wait till you realize Roger has been using his American Ezio Auditore voice and for Frontiers, he just used his Chris Redfield voice.
I grew up playing Dreamcast and have soooo much nostalgia for the Adventure games and Ryan's performance. Played Heroes quite a bit as well. That said, the answer is Jason hands down.
Roger sounds amazing and he is perfect but he doesn’t sound 15 (sonic’s age) he sound more 17-20
Personally I think Jason just fits sonic much better
How is he perfect then?
@ he sounds great but he doesn’t sound 15
@@TheAnazingGuyso then why is he perfect but you don’t call Jason perfect in that sense?
@TheTrollingPokémon247 different opinion?
two words:

I gotta thank Roger Craig Smith, actually, if not for him, I would've never been inspired to play my Sonic Games in Japanese, and realize the Peak Sonic VA that is Junichi Kagemaru.
All jokes aside, in terms of English VA's, For me, it's a Tie between J Griff, and Ryan Drummond, since I grew up with both.
That's exactly how I got exposed to Junichi lmao
@@LuxeCrux lmao, nice 🤣👌
Jason is definitely the best but we been real lucky with the voices. They’ve all been amazing.
For me- Roger Craig is Sonic's definitive voice. I just love his tone that he brings to Sonic. Whenever I picture Sonic in my mind, that's who I always hear.
You forget the greatest Sonic VA of all time: Jaleel White. The OG.
2:58 That caught me off guard! 😂
Sonic's CD voice was the *GOAT.* Change my mind.
In my eyes Jason was and always will be the sonic but I really like rogers performance especially for boom sonic
Honestly, Roger in a Deep Voice was Perfectly fine. Just in case, But he's My Fav before Jason
Respect that, but the only reason I would put him at 3rd is mainly because the direction colors to forces. Love his other voice overs tho
Ryan Drummond’s my all-time fave Sonic.
Whenever I do Sonic’s voice myself, I always do Ryan’s take on him
Jason Griffith, only one that makes sonic have a deep voice (with the exception of frontiers)
Really? Upon revisiting, Jason Griffith’s voice sounds the youngest of the three. And his voice was pretty high pitched most of the time.
@@paulgilbert5278Super Sonic's voice is deeper in Riders 1 & 2 but also sickly especially when he pulls off a trick and shouts "Yes!".
@@artistanthony1007 Yeah I guess Jason's Sonic was a bit nasal sounding as if he had a cold
"Tails? whatch out you're gonna crash AAAHHH"
I'll never forget these words
1000% Roger. I will die on this hill.
Bro, by the time I was even 5
Roger Craig Smith took Sonic's role
so I grew up with him as the voice actor lol
When it comes to Junichi, i tend to actually listen to it upon replaying Sonic games to get a different experience and feel. Hes great. I started this habit after I got sick if hearing the same voice lines when i was 100%ing SA2B and just switched languages out of frustration. Neatless to say I discovered something truly great and freah.
But my favorite sonic overall is Ryan, i feel he didn't get a chance to really evolve or change that much. SA2 is the best sounding but after listening to Sonic and Tails R on UA-cam I'm convinced he would have been such a great Sonic if he stayed.
