I legit just finished the episode. This was freaking amazing! The acting, the environment, the characters. Matt Reeves knows how to make Gotham feel like it should be. Victor is an interesting side character, and Collin just outdoes himself. And that ending wow, that was crazy. Can't wait to see more! Dang, I love this Batman universe!
@MindOfJigsaw1 Dude fr man, it was so cool. Love seeing so many new characters. There's so much presence in Sophia and it was cool seeing Sal after hearing about him in the movie
Ep. 1 was absolute perfection. The way they set up Oz's insecurities could not have been handled better. Oz was so smart and after this episode I could see him being the main antagonist in a Batman film.
Yh like that shot where victor is climbing the stairs behind him and sees his leg and when he’s on the train and he avoids the disabled seats 👌 perfect
Not gonna lie that even when oz was taken being tortured and then the car shows up with the brother dead and his finger cut off was honestly really good
I jokingly predicted the Oz was gonna kill Alberto. When he actually did I was like "bro, I was just kidding". Alberto was the kind of character you'd expect to get screen time; so it was pleasant surprise.
I love how the ring has 3 different meanings. 1 to make feel like Oz wants it for power. 2 to use it to win back Sals trust. 3 to set up Sal and his crew for the murder of Sophie’s brother. Master class writing 👏👏
It's literally A Bronx Tale as well between Oswald Cobblepot and his ward Victor. You have someone looking up to a person by wanting to emulate him, be respected, revered.
The Penguin is the BEST Pilot I've seen all year. Phenomenal hour of television. The story is fantastic and intense. Matt reeves is a master of his craft. Oh and Collin Farrel and Criston Milioti EMMY Frontrunners‼️ Bravo HBO 👏 🔥
This pilot was the best I've seen and it's tied for me with Tulsa King's premiere this year. Really, this is just the first episode of Penguin, I can't wait to see what they have in store for the rest of the season. It's been a long time since I was excited about a show coming out weekly that I'm waiting in anticipation for, other than The Boys, of course
The subtle plum, purple color is a nice homage to The Penguin's look from the Batman 66 series portrayed by Burgess Meredith whose costume is part purple.
Fun Fact: The mobster Penguin mentions (Rex Calabrese) is Catwoman's father in the comics and is nicknamed "The Lion" because his name is Leo Leone and for his brutal method of killing. He has fang dentures he can use to rip through flesh. (The relation to Catwoman may have changed since comics are just like that).
Eh.... her pitch to Zhao was a little dry on the delivery, I dunno. Maybe that was deliberate. I still like the performance though, good balance so far.
@geordiemc4571 In retrospect, The Batman was not as gruesome as we assumed it would be. It was brutal at times. Gothic might be a good way to put it. The fact that Batman does not kill and he is a hero may have made it more PG-13 and that is not a bad thing. At the end of the day, it was about hunting down a serial killer. I can't think of the last season premiere of a show that had my eyes glued to the screen from beginning to end, no hyperbole. First off excellent writing by Lauren LeFranc with vivid dialogue and intense scenes. Secondly, the acting is masterclass especially from Colin Farrell who completely disappears once again as Oz but in a much significant role and Cristan Miloti is a pure unapologetic scene stealer. Finally, the atmosphere is so connected to the Matt Reeves Batmanverse that you can watch the 2022 film and this series right after, it just flows perfectly. This was so good. We already know Colin Farrell is a great actor, but this was amazing! I was so enthralled the whole time and completely understand the glee on Coy's face the entire time. The rest of the cast too, the atmosphere, the delivery, my God. This is the kind of work that's great for scene study and analysis. Bravo! Bravo!👏👏
That was phenomenal! How was that so good!? I don't know what will happen with the rest of the season but that was a fantastic first episode. That made me genuinely happy. I love this world.
The best part about this show is that once I found myself sucked into the environment I realized how truly terrifying it would be if I ran into Batman if I lived in Gotham.
My hometown buddy Mike Zegen plays Alberto Falcone in the pilot episode & I couldn't be more proud of him. I messaged him on fb and immediately had to follow up - " Oops - guess I spoke too soon. lol Well you were excellent in a memorable opening scene! "
I’m late on this but this episode was surprisingly good. Honestly the whole crime and mob esthetics makes me want to watch more shows like this. Everyone is pulling an amazing performance especially the actress for Sophia, she immediately made her self known as someone you do not cross.
Give Cristin Milioti her emmy already, Sofia Falcone was so quietly menacing it made me feel so uneasy. Totally bought that there was something unhinged lurking just under the surface that may leap out any second.
They foiled me. I thought he was going to die at the end of the episode, but when he first showed up and I saw Penguin trying to play him and use him as the man behind the man, I thought that is where the series was headed. Boy was I wrong, and happy to be wrong 😂😂😂
Normally not interested in this genre…but this is such an amazing show. I got sucked in and had to watch it at home, on the go, etc. it is a great show. Anyone can get into. And I’m shocked by how well the main character got into his role and costume!
This first episode held my attention from beginning to end! my eyes never left the screen to look at my phone, brilliant writing I loved this. I can't wait till next week! Thanks for the reaction guys!
Exactly I feel the underrated part of this episode was the mom. She drives his whole change. Wanted to escape to now realizing hes actually built to run things. Hes right the old heads have no more ambition. He effectively set up the gang war on his own. Salvatore is too prideful now that he has his ring to rat out Oswald. The old heads are too blinded by Oswald's demeanor to see hes a threat. And Sphia is now likely thrown off his tail. Hes played all sides effectively. Victor is his ally. But hes crafted his entire loyalty as such that now hes complicit in all the plans Oswald has carried out. So no way Victor betrays him now. Victor unknowingly made enemies with both crime families.
I haven’t seen Cristin Milioti since that final season of How I Met Your Mother… she is KILLING IT here! This is definitely the best pilot episode of television I’ve seen all year💯
I love how there’s an actual reason why he waddles, and in the context of a mob boss it would actually make sense for someone like that to become known as the penguin. I’m just so damn happy this universe exists because it’s exactly what I want from these characters. If the next movies are as good as the first, I could easily see it becoming my favorite super trilogy.

This was such a great first episode. Colin Farrell is such a versatile actor, he shines so much here. Cristin Milioti became one of my favorite actresses, I already liked her in Palm Springs and she's nailing it here
I was stunned by this first episode, and now I can't stop getting impatient as each week the start of a great war between families in Gotham, becomes more and more sinister!!! And doing what the Penguin, has been in the comics and in their adaptations in video games or series. He is someone who should not be underestimated. And they show a dark and brazen side to him.💀 Colin Farrell really does an amazing job in his performance.👏 And I really liked Victor, he's great!
I feel like right now, none of these mobs feel like a threat to Batman and once penguin rises to his absolute kingdom that’s when it’ll catch Batman’s attention.
I want it to continue, I want Matt Reeves to make more of this, please it can't end because of the new DCU movies, he should have a opportunity to do more of shows and movies like that.
What the hell are you talking about? Just because James Gunn is a CEO doesn't mean he won't let Reeves do whatever he wants with his universe. In fact, there has been confirmed another spin-off in development; we don't know of what character, but there is more coming. And also, Matt Reeves didn't create the show, didn't direct, or wrote any episodes; he was a producer, and Lauren LeFranc is the showrunner.
This could be as good as Ozark, i will be honest i never watched Breaking Bad, seen a few soprano episodes. But definitely a strong start, You actually forget that it's Colin Farrell, he does such a great job, Sofia looks like she's going to be a worthy adversary.. curious to see who else we might get a glimpse of in this series..Good comments, good reaction.
Wasn't sure I would be watching this show, but seeing a cast member from HIMYM with a major role, and it's the mother of all people? I'm in. She's so good at her job.
Amen its a nice Palate cleanse after that monstrosity Acolyte too...yikes...I know some people don't like the streak model of television but when its good its really good and is kind of set up perfect for holiday shows like Agatha and more adult dramas like the Penguin.
What a solid episode of television. Ppl complaining about this particular take on the characters, we need to be open minded and understand that these characters should be available to interpretation by different creators. The Reeves verse is inspired from very grounded real world elements while stil managing to maintain the essence of the characters. And I'm completely fine with that. Plus, year 1 Batman had such kind of grounded villains.
Just as Jason Todd was caught by Batman stealing the tires from the Batmobile and became the second Robin, Vic was caught stealing the tires from Penguin's car and became his pupil. The place where Oz lives is called Burgess, a reference to the actor Burgess Meredith who played the Penguin in the 60s series and movie.
Here first, fantastic opening episode and opener in general! Can definitely see that while keeping to the world and feel of the Batman movie, it’s definitely still going for its own tone which I’m all for!
They really had you thinking that giving the ring to Sal was his play to earn his trust when in reality it was to frame him for murder the whole time. I’m excited for where this show is going because the writing is already good.

@@reynaldolorenzo8409 Reeves is gonna do projects for the DCU aswell
@@reynaldolorenzo8409let's calm down a bit, man. All he was saying is that he wanted it to continue.
@@doc8013 The way it was phrased sounded like James Gunn was going to stop Reeves from making more content, which is the purpose of my comment.
This episode was incredible, HBO did it again!
I loved everything about this episode. Cristin Milioti seems to be outstanding as Sofia
Agatha and Penguin back to back, we are eating good in the next few months.
Thank you! Finally someone who isn't the shows about which is better, but choosing to just enjoy them both.
Don’t forget arcane coming out soon
@@Oncewasacco Oh, Arcane is coming around my birthday, don't worry, I didn't forget :D
Amen its a nice Palate cleanse after that monstrosity Acolyte too...yikes...I know some people don't like the streak model of television but when its good its really good and is kind of set up perfect for holiday shows like Agatha and more adult dramas like the Penguin.
Robinsville is robinsville because bludhaven does exist in this universe already. Thats where catwoman said she might head to at the end of The Batman
@34:14 maybe Robinsville is a reference to Robin Lord-Taylor, who played the Penguin in Gotham. Fits with the Burgess Meredith reference.
Just give Colin Farrell the Emmy right now.
Can't wait for next week episode
Colin Farrell is having a blast. What a premier
Such a amazing show I can’t wait to see where it goes 😮💨
I was blown away by this episode. Been a fan of Colin Farrell since Phone Booth. This is by far his best performance. Just unrecognisable!
Here first, fantastic opening episode and opener in general! Can definitely see that while keeping to the world and feel of the Batman movie, it’s definitely still going for its own tone which I’m all for!
As a fan of the batman universe and mob movies/shows....this was fucking amazing.
They really had you thinking that giving the ring to Sal was his play to earn his trust when in reality it was to frame him for murder the whole time. I’m excited for where this show is going because the writing is already good.
