Volvo handbrake height adjustment trick

  • I had a problem with the handbrake on a Volvo S60. But it could be a S80, V70 as these have the same setup. When the handbrake was applied on a correctly adjusted cable, the handbrake worked well on one side and was very weak on the other and failed its MOT. Watch the video to see how I changed the separator bar to an adjustable one, which allowed the hand brake lever to be lower and each side to be optimised for braking effect. I had already changed the handbrake cable (remarkably easy job). So this was not the issue.
    The adjuster was bought from Ebay.

    You can save time and trouble when removing the rear calipers by not undoing the caliper from it's carrier, you just undo the 2 x 8mm bolts (13mm head/socket size) that you undid second and remove the complete caliper as one without separating it from the carrier and without needing to remove the springs etc.

      true... unless your rotor has lip on the outside edge that prevents you from removing the caliper with the pads installed.

      trying to be clever, but in actual fact looking like an idiot! you would just push the pads back

    While there are other videos showing parking brake service on P2 Volvos that are also helpful, yours is the only one that shows the use of the adjustable spreaders. I've ordered a parking brake hardware kit that comes with the adjustable spreaders, and after seeing your video, I now know how to install them. Thanks!

    See that uneven wear on the brake disk and surely poor braking power, it may be caused by faulty valves inside the ABS valve unit. To prevent this, never force push the piston back to make place to new brake pads, without releasing the bleeder.

      Hi Mate,
      Thank you for taking the time to make the video, inspiring. I have just attempted myself and have an issue that is missing from this video. The aftermarket adjuster doesnt fit alongside the fitment spring. How did you overcome this issue? Watching the video over a couple of time looks like you left the spring out? Is this safe? Or will the shoes come apart without? Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Great Video. I have read somewhere that the pins should be cleaned up and put back dry.Silicone greases can eat certain rubbers (I don't know what the boots are made of tho')

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  8 років тому

      Silicon grease is rubber friendly in fact it extends the life of rubber components. I think you read about petroleum based greases which do attack and damage rubber. I have started using silicon oil spray on all my rubber boots also, to prolong their life and it does work. Sprayed once a year.

    • @richardcockram9706

      +bunnybr Hi...Yes it is true in most cases as long as the seal is not Silicone....Silicone seals live longest with inert grease like Krytox or similar.

    did you adjust the nut on the handbrake end first?

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  8 років тому +1

      Yes. In this case because it had the adjuster, I took up some of the slack at the handbrake end. Then adjusted each side for optimum handbrake effect. However on systems with no main adjuster or difficult to adjust system I only use the shoe adjuster method, which works very well.

    It was at a guess the cause of your problems.

    • @rscamaro145
      @rscamaro145 8 років тому

      +Scott Raven Rear disc is fine, and if it wasn't, the shoes only grab the inside anyway.

    • @tazdeveel
      @tazdeveel 7 років тому

      The condition of the OUTSIDE of the disc won't cause the handbrake any problems. It's if the inside was like the outside, then you will have problems with the handbrake not working! Try watching the video more carefully as it will give you a clue......

    top video lot of help for an amateur mechanic like myself. one question.. i've a slight steering wobble when i'm slowing my car from 30k-70k could it be my disc's worn uneven, alloys buckled, wheel balance off?

  • @kristupasantanavicius9093

    You do not want to grease anything on the handbrake system. It is not a closed system, and so it will collect brake and rust dust. If you grease it, it will gunk up and will be stuck completely. I just did a handbrake job on my 1997 Volvo 850 and the adjusting mechanism was moving just fine without any grease on it. But it was full of rust dust. Grease would have completely locked it up.

    Hi, This adjuster I had in my VW Transporter 1979 model.It is useful ONLY if You have a small window at the back of the splash guard ,so when the rotor is on ,to get a access to it and to rotate by small flat screwdriver.

    • @Fluffychip
      @Fluffychip 2 роки тому

      He's shown how you can adjust it through the stud hole 🤷‍♂️

    • @lyudmilvarbanov7294
      @lyudmilvarbanov7294 2 роки тому

      @@Fluffychip I am not sure of this.Probably You must to use flat screwdriver to push and rotate the adjuster clockwise and small hook to rotate in anticlockwise

    Thank you for this informative video I too found one side hand break failed the MOT only to find no way to adjustBrilliant

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  9 років тому +1

      If one side is weak then I have found that it is usually the handbrake cable on that side that is sticking. The plastic sheath on the cable starts to break down. if you take off the rear covers of the central console, you will see the hooked bar which attaches both rear cables When you apply the handbrake this should be pull equally on both sides. If it favours one side then the other cable is sticking. It looks a hard job but is very easy. 30 mins the first time i did it. Good idea to put the manual adjuster on as well Hope this helps.
