Lost History Uncovered. The Border Dispute Between Canada and Alaska | Destination Adventure

- History and discovery have been a desire in my bones from a very early age. I grew up watching shows like Indiana Jones, and the Goonies, and dreamt I may have an opportunity some day to discover something for myself. There aren't many places in the world today that haven't been explored by man at some point in history, but because of exactly this, there are remnants and artifacts left behind, telling us hints of a story long forgotten.
Canada is not known for ancient civilizations and mass hoards of hidden treasure, because for most of the known existence of humans, it has been under ice. Never the less, throughout the development of our country, especially given its size, there is a trail of historical breadcrumb scattered across this great land mass, teaching us the stories of our forefathers. These four stone storehouses are no exception. These buildings were designed and build by Captain David D. Gaillard of the U.S. Corps of Engineers, who was known also for his work in digging the Panama Canal. In fact, the Gaillard Cut was one of the most difficult sections of the Canal.
Weather or not Gaillard meant to build the storehouses on the Canada side of the border, doing so during a time while the border was still under dispute was not an action that Canada took lightly. Luckily, this issue was solved without any physical conflict, and Canada did not have to forfeit the Islands supporting the two storehouses.
Since their construction, the storehouses were not used one single time, and today they are a chapter in our history book that has been practically forgotten. Never the less, more than a century later, they are still standing, and I am fortunate enough to have been able to visit all four of them. These trips are long for this little boat of mine, so extensive planning is necessary to make sure it will even be achievable. If an issue occurs in one of these remote locations, I am equipped to survive an extended amount of time, but it is not an experience I am wanting to challenge.
I hope that I get the opportunity in the future to interview an expert on this particular story, but it is quite possible that the only existing knowledge of these locations is limited to the brief article online, and the footage I have captured over the past years. But still, I will continue to look.

What a beautiful country you live in. One of the best channels on the internet. Thanks for taking us along with you.
Epic channel on this channel
I agree.💯♥️
Destination Adventure mornings are always best.. Thank you Dustin & Emi for another excellent adventure
Agreed
Thank you 😊
@@Destination_Adventure Don't skip my question on the cave😭😭😭!!! Come on now paleeeze!
Dustin, I wish you could have spoken with my father who passed away last November at 97. He spent many years travelling up and down the coast,in small bushplanes and boats, coming to know it like the back of his hand. 😂The stories of his adventures, the true characters he met were fascinating. What I can recommend, if you are able to find them, are Jim Spilsbury’s books. One of the bush pilots dad knew, Jim went on to success in radio communications, but his books cover a lot of his early years. Spilsbury’s Coast is one as well as The Accidental Airline.
My condolences 😔
So many emotions today. Your channel does that to me Dustin, but in a week of uncertain health scares and facing the inevitable with sometimes horror and sometimes joy. I start crying to think if I have many episodes left! I have tried to tell you what this Artwork means to me Dustin, but I never get close. When the tests are all done, and I am hopefully cleared I will have many more years of trying to tell you just how talented you are. If not, then know you made my life better creating these stunning works. Thank you.
This is very heart warming, thank you. I’m sorry you are facing some challenging times, but I hope they will soon pass, and bring good news.
@@Destination_Adventure Thank you Dustin, I am currently feeling optimistic. I appreciate your words of encouragement.
Emi is a trooper. She's realising just how inhospitable spring weather can be.
Awesome video Dustin. Your pursuit of these hidden gems is commendable.
Thanks from the Philippines for my weekly dose of Canadiana.
Looks like Storehouse #2 would make a cool tiny house project! Thank you & Emi for hanging in there to find it! Another terrific episode!
Em is going to have more than a few tales to tell when she returns home. Thanks for taking me along.
Hi Dustin! I remember getting the rig stuck. I love the new setup! But HEY, you recall the time you had to stop videoing bc the cave you found had ummm.... a historical findings or ??? and you couldn't tell us what it was?!? I've waited patiently but now I need to know - What was it?? Or who??
I've been wondering about that too.
That came to my mind during this video too! Curious minds….
One word for Saturday morning coffee with Dustin! "Awesome"
Happy Birthday Dustin 🎉🎉🎂🎂. Great video !
Thank you 😊
@Destination_Adventure yes sir...Happy Birthday my friend.
Happy Birthday Bud
Did you know Terrace side of Tyee Overpass along straight stretch there is a road n camping right on beach to work channel road is passable for ure rig heck peeps pull there big ocean boats n big trailers in there
I hope that your footage gets noted in Canadian history archives as those storehouses you may be the only one documenting them so these are important videos, thanks for braving the ocean!!!!
26 minutes and 58 seconds of just plane beautiful WOW!! Thanks Explorers.
Thank you😊
I’m hoping she stays. 🤞
Dustin, your videos are so amazing. Beautiful terrain and such professional quality. I have always wondered why the algorithm gods haven't allowed your videos to reach a larger audience. I hope your channel continues to grow and you reach the viewership you deserve.
Hopefully I can find my way onto that algorithm. Not too sure what I’m doing wrong 🤷🏻 lol
@Destination_Adventure , History Channel and National Geographic are probably paying UA-cam to keep your channel from doing better because they're just jealous that your videos are better than theirs.
The sunset shot of the mountains at the start of the video was amazing 👏👏
From another ex-Princess crew member: I love your adventures. Makes me want to visit and explore BC again. Keep them coming!
My favorite channel to see a new video pop up. You need a tv show
Stunning videography, you could use walkie talkie's so that incase your incurred injuries at least you could let Emma know. Thank you for finding the boarder between our two great countries, stunning work as usual!
Fantastic idea with the walkie talkies when split up ! A big increase in safety.
I have to say, the intro rolls this week are stunning. Your eye is getting even better! Great editing, too. Our best to Eme.
I’m not much for open water, but that scenery is stunning. It’s the mountains that always call to me.
Absolutely spectacular scenery! The grizz sighting was a fantastic bonus! Leaving Emmi makes me nervous and walkie talkies or something to stay in touch is a great idea! Thank you for sharing and love you both❤❤
Thankyou Dustin. A big shout out to you both from regional South Australia. Loving this story as you discover each of the store houses over the seasons. It’s been awesome following along.
Hope you’re both enjoying the season opening up for you as your weather improves. Thinking of you. 👍🏼
I spent a lot of time chasing Chums and Sockeye commercial fishing the area in my youth. Thanks for bringing me back.
Another great story history lesson. We appreciate all that you do to bring us these videos. Stay safe and keep enjoying your journey.
I went to Prince Rupert in 1975, I asked a waitress at a local restaurant how many days it rain here, she said that it is better said how many days it doesn't rain, and she said about 5 days, I left to find work in Prince George :) so happy to see you with your best friend in the passenger\copilot seat, you have the best documentary channel on British Columbia, and the best visuals of any documentary film production ever i have seen, and I am 73
Reminds me of a story I heard about Fairbanks. Some tourists see a little boy and ask him how often does is it rain. He replies "I don't know, ma'am, I'm only 7 years old".
i've sailed the inside passage in a variety of vessels, once on a 55' sailboat, once on a camping trip on a 22' power boat, i was the chief engineer on a 110' motor yacht on one trip and i was aboard the Rotterdam as a passenger. we had the most fun camping and motoring and fishing. we had amazing seafood feasts every night, raging driftwood bon fires, our only regret was not bringing enough butter for the crab feasts
I hope Emi's tummy has recovered. Love this and all your adventures.
Awesome adventure. Glad you were able to brave through the elements and find the store house. Epic wilderness shots and what a treat to see the grizzly with her cubs. Thanks as always for taking us along on the journey.
G'day from Adelaide, Australia 🇦🇺 Love your work, beautiful to wake up to on a sunny Sunday morning. Mother Nature in all her glory ❤
27 minutes that felt like 2 hours...such a great story. Thanks for taking the risks for us.
Beautiful and thanks for the memories, too. My father-in-law who was a commercial fisherman made many passes through Work Channel over the years!
Dustin how stunning, Somerville island! Great name!!! Pristine beautiful country, thanks Dustin for showing parts of Canada we Canadians may not get to see!!!!!!! So special!!!
Thank you Emi and Dustin for bringing everyone along for your adventure ❤
Exceptional shots in this one Dustin. Thankyou. That intro was downright creepy. Thought it was funny, the only mark in that ferry ramp was from your moho. 🤭👍
Absolutely fantastic cinematography! Our Saturday morning ritual has been fulfilled ! This is by far the best history lesson in which I never knew about , thank you so much for taking us along and can’t wait till next Saturday morning to watch yet again Destination Adventure ! Safe journeys to you and Emmy 👍🇨🇦
Thank you
Canada is even more beautiful than I remember. I've not been up there since... I was about 12 years old. Thank you so much for taking us along with you. I totally see why you ditched the RV and went with the new truck. Thank you for the entertainment and documentation. Such beautiful territory. Really good shots in filmology.
I will never get tired of BC. With or without a rockhouse. Great video. 💙
This was a very special trip, yes I was with you last season for the hunt of the stone houses. So glad you stayed for the second bay. Well worth the find. A piece of history so forgotten, if you hadn’t revealed it , I think many would not have known . So important to keep our history recorded. Your videos will be in history logs long after we are gone, mark my words Dustin.
So Emmy maybe out of her elements, but she also knows her own limits , she knows when to roll and hold. I am really impressed with Emmys start of the season…she , you Emmy are compassing really well, it is tough country, Canada, congratulations May the seasons trip bring you sunny days , smooth roads and many fish.❤
Thank you for letting me tag along guys…oh and Mick says he is sorry about the charting thing and would like to continue to tag along as well…😮 😅
As always …stay safe and take care of each other ❤
Thanks so much for all of the kind words.
Another great northcoast trip Dustin. Sounds like u made it there before the ferry broke down. Engine problems.u have to load vehicle on a barge then ride water taxi to Tuck.
Can you imagine out there building those....just wow
Another beautiful, but tough adventure. Great to see Emi is trooping along and hopefully getting in the swing of things all the while building memories of a lifetime. Stunning work as always on the camera along with great production. Nice to see that you have left your mark in this life, even if it's on the ferry ramp! Thanks Dustin for bringing us along with you again and making us smile!
Thanks buddy for taking me away once again on a sat night God bless u , till next week Emmy & Dustin shalom
What a great Saturday morning, waking up to a video from Lax Kw'alaams. One of my all time favourite communities, Ive been working with over the years. In 2023 we filmed part of our documentary "Dirt Relations" in Lax Kw'alaams with students from the Lax K Adventure Academy. Won't be making it there this summer for work, so really nice to see the video. Thanks Dustin!
🍻
Thanks for the adventure, thank you Coutts and Mark, from Money Pit Boating for bringing me here.
Thx for the shout out from NZ. Milford Sound is indeed a beautiful thing, visited for the 1st time last year after 55 years..... ❤
I have no disappointment in the videos you share with us. Each one is crafted to perfection and the views you capture are mind blowing. There probably isn't anyone alive that knows very much about these structures, so just finding them is a feat in itself. Thanks Dustin for giving us a peak into far off places most will never see first hand.
Thanks so much 😊
Great again Dustin. It tugs at me to go back.
Written at 39°N in the Midwest.
I enjoy seeing where my heart will always lie. Australia is a beautiful land and beautiful people. Though my heart misses the rythm of the forest.
I always enjoy your videos and happy to see Emi back with you like in your early days. Such a beautiful place to be able to share it with her.
Huge thanks to you for every video that you do and the adventures you bring us on.
The drone shots this year looking extra crisp!!!
I get the tingles all over with your videotography and music mixes.
Thanks for sharing Dustin and Emi,awesome video stay safe.
Enjoyed this video…great scenery and the history lesson was very interesting! Look forward to every Saturday morning!
I agree it’s nice that you provide this information, it’s good to learn about places and history that is so remote . Say hi to Emmy Im sure she is having fun.
You are a trooper and Emmy too 👌👍😁🤗 a destination adventure well done my friend 😉
Thank you for sharing your awesome adventure, Kenneth and Nanae Vancouver.
I am so glad you got to check another storehouse off the list.
Thanks for the history you found. Tell Emmy she's a real trooper.
Even with a beautiful distraction like Emmy, Dustin hasn't let his video quality drop. Fantastic as usual!
Hello from New Zealand! Reminds us ALOT of the Milford sound! Been watching your videos since aaaages ago! Love them! Hope to get over there one day and explore. Keep up the stunning vids!
Dustin thanks again for an absolutely beautiful journey so glad you bring us along🤘
I ahve not watched your channel for some time but I am pleased that you have upgraded your adventure rig, ground clearance is important, as is comfort. Your travel companion seems to fair well and is keen.
The sheds that you showed could be called 'Embasseys', as those that built them were not of ill intention.
It is amazing how well the stonework has prevailed and how quickly they were built.
Yes, inflatable boats are wet but remarkably comfortable and seaworthy.
Thank you, safe travels.
That is such cool history. Would love to take a trip there.
That Swellfish sure handles the seas good. If I'm ever in the market for an inflatable I'll check them out.
Dustin....another location added to the bucket list ,thank u
So cool to hear you mention little old Kiwi land in this one .... keep up the fantastic travels!!! Love watching ❤
Thanks Dustin, Great Start to my Saturday. We have so much beauty in BC. Thanks for exploring and sharing
You’ve outdone yourself, this is art.
Thanks so much for the support 😊
The scenery , getting to your destination , is always beautiful !
Fantastic, as always. Your drone shots get a chef's kiss. I wish youtube would let you have multiple commentary tracks. I would watch it again to hear Emi's perspective.
Spectacular!!
Spent a summer living/working off a Heli logging float camp tied up on Summerville Island back in the early 90's. Very remote and beautiful place. Thanks for the videos Dustin!
Speechless... Magnificent!. I paddled Work Channel (part), that wind came up and we had to turn around. Glad you both got thru that narly water section. It looked fugly 🫣. I half expected to see an impromptu camping trip ... At least that stone building would be a windbreak. Stay safe and thank you for taking us places remote and forgotten, and beyond beautiful. It calms the soul.
Thank you for sharing the beauty and history of BC.
No better way to start Sunday morning watching your channel. Thank you for what you do!!
Amazing and beautiful as usual! Thanks for the history!

Thank you for showing such amazing areas of Canada, cheers from Ontario
Happy weekend everyone 😊👍
We live in Alberta just off the Yellowhead HWY/16 and have been wanting to jump on the HWY and drive to Prince Rupert. Thanks for sharing your adventures 😊
The opening shot and music are just magical. You deserve ‘ a major award’.
Your uploads are some of my favorite! Thanks to you both for braving it and going into that second bay! Every time you catch sight of another of those store houses I get goosebumps! I really hope you are able to find someone with knowledge about them they can share! ❤
Nice to see the follow up video today. Persistence paid off! Well done!
love it!!!! not another soul in sight!!! thanks again for the adventure!! you've quickly rose to my top 5 youtube channels!! and i dont watch TV lol
🇨🇦 Great video Dustin. Thanks.🇨🇦
I was born in Alberta but am a Kiwi too and live the closest you can to Milford! I absolutely love you giving me a chance to see places I one day want to bring my son!! Warmed my heart when you mentioned Milford as Te Anau ( the town which is the gate way to Milford) reminds me of Waterton National Park with a sleepy little town on the side of a lake. If you ever come back to NZ I can hook you up with some people to talk to on adventures into this wild area!!
Wonderful, thank you.
We absolutely love you Dustin.
We are looking into a trip up north. Never done this trip before. We have learned so so much from you in a short period of time as newbies to your channel.
I feel comfortable to say...youare our go to in what's what up north.
I got my new atlas today ( ya I'm a map geek...don't laugh😂)
And I know most folks don't get the absolute joy of mapping out trip.
Lol.
Just loving this a whole lot. You rock. Thankyou Dustin. ♥️
Wow! I could watch your videos in IMAX. Maybe one day you can get it in a theater.
That would be so incredible wouldn't it. Take and put each seasons adventure into one full length feature film. Maybe we might get lucky and it happens one of these days.
Excellent video Dustin. Hats off to Aimee getting her sea legs!
Aloha Eme and Dustin ' heck yeah I remember this trip before and how awesome it is up there and not so awesome possum getting stuck with the big camper ! Cool short interview with the captain. Absolute amazing up there I love it ! Glad no problems with bears and didn't get totally soaked 😆 You have a really beautiful guide Eme I can say is definitely more reliable than Mickachnic and cuter too 😄! Fun ride my friends! Take good care and have fun n thanks for the journey ❤ Patrick
