  • Per request, more details on how the feather sections from the version 2 video are assembled. First, join a full-size template from printouts (one side only). Trace the entire pattern onto cardstock www.northameric...) with a dry ballpoint pen. Flip over to do mirror image. Cut into 1, 2, or 4 pieces per section. The centre folds are scored with the same pen. Fold by hand. The outer feathers are all folded the same way. The innermost section has folds in different directions because it partly folds onto itself (see close-up of scale model in other videos). Texture is created by rubbing with a cloth over trapezoidal cutouts. Glue with wood glue, using template to align pieces as precisely as possible. The best approach would be to build a small version as a guide using regular paper. I can confirm that the real set is just a scaled up version of the little one.

    Can you show us how to do the pulley system with the strips to extend and retract it? It would be greatly appreciated.

    You keep saying template, where can we buy/print said template from?

    This is amazing!!!! I'm trying to make cosplay articulating wings and I was wondering if you have a pattern I could purchase or download. Really looking forward to the full tutorial!

      If you need the pattern now and will figure out the mechanics yourself, then at the end of my video, Blueprints for Paper Wings Version 2, is the full template I am using -- including the shape of the pulley and the backplate. I've changed it only slightly here and there, since. If you play the video full screen and hit Print Screen key on a computer keyboard for each tile, you can paste each of the 13 captures into a text or picture editor with high enough resolution to print an entire template in pieces. The fourth frame contains a scaling square representing the full size template for a shoulder height of around 58 inches (147cm) or more. For example, for a shoulder height of 39", scale down by 39/58 = 67% before printing (i.e. print it so the box is 0.67 x 5" = 3 3/8" on each side).

    Hey dude! Nice video and perfect project. Why don't you make the drawing available for download? I really enjoy to duplicate it for a Halloween party in Brazil. Thanks a lot

    Cool but could you make a pair of articulated butterfly wings that would be great

    All your videos are great and very detailed and these wings are awesome but I was wondering instead of over the shoulders pulley system can this be made with the pulleys pulled from the bottom behind the back? I bought some cheap ones from Party City that have a from the back pulley system. I like the look of yours way more but I think I’d want a from the back pulley system.

      Likely not comfortably. With an 8-foot (2.4m) wingspan, the strings are pulled 12 inches (30cm) to move the lifters half that distance (using a travelling pulley arrangement to make it easier). Reaching back is an awkward motion with less range, compared to pulling straight down from the shoulders. They feel heavier than you'd think. With a separate harness to take the weight, it may be possible to route thin tubing behind the back and under the arms instead -- copper water pipe or bicycle brake cable casing, for example. I don't know if the strings would retract freely with the extra bends, but placing small weights at the wingtips helps.

    Hello. I don’t understand English I write through a translator. Is it possible to download drawings?

    Is this your original design?

    Hello! Trying to figure out the mechanisms, and the only part that confuses me is the string attached to the axel. How does that work?

    • @pineapplz7162
      @pineapplz7162  5 років тому +1

      In the black wing version, the string pulls on the pulley, the pulley spins the axle and the axle is connected to the wing. That is a weak design because all the torque is transmitted through a small axle only. In the white version, the pulley is attached to the edge of the top wing directly, so the axle doesn't have any twist force applied to it. There is a gap left underneath it for the other feathers to pivot freely.
      One end of the string (mason line) is anchored at the top of the pulley. So that the connection is secure even for a cardboard pulley, I tuck the knotted end of the string into a hole through the face of the pulley and the string comes up through a much smaller vertical hole to the edge. Refer to the diagram and some of the videos. The other end is attached to the bottom of the back plate. The string length is adjusted so that it is slightly loose when the wing is closed and keeps a slight fold (important) in the lower wing when it is fully extended.
      When the bottom side of the arm is raised by separate drawstrings over the shoulders (shown only in the black wings video), the slack is taken up in the pulley string, and the top of the pulley will rotate to face the other anchor point near the bottom of the backplate. Since the pulley is fastened to the top feather edge, the feather rotates up also. The pulley diameter is sized so that it rotates enough to fully lift the wing for the short distance that the arm travels.
      When the drawstring is released, the weight of the wing tip torques down on the pulley and it winches itself back toward the backplate. This backwinding is important to retract the arm so the wing folds back against the backplate. If the wings are too light, they will not fully retract by themselves and the optional elastic band on the pulley can be used to assist.
      I hope that somewhere in there I've answered your question.
