Great series. Thanks for sharing. Beacon Rock and the surrounding lands on the WA side of the Columbia were forced to be ceded by my tribal ancestors, to the United States in the mid 1800's. Native Americans from this area were forced to go the the Grand Ronde reservation in Oregon, and the Yakima Reservation in Washington. My great^4 grandfather signed the treaty with an X giving away this land where indians had lived for thousands of years.

Yeah, Nick. The Columbia River gorge was practically in my backyard, and I've hiked all over around it, but still haven't seen much of it, and it's still full of mysteries. It's one of the most remarkable places on earth. Any one who hasn't seen it is missing out. I never get tired of it. So many stories.

Good one! FYI, for possible future uses, there's a photogenic cinder cone just off SR 141 west of Goldendale, that's cut wide open from, of course, cinder mining and it offers a sort of cross section view.

I went to an event at Beacon Rock State Park, so I have a fondness for it. So glad to see this! I didn't realize it was the leftover from a cinder cone. I thought it had been a Cascades stratovolcano that had been worn down.
I thought it was the native people who named it Beacon Rock. I read that when they saw Beacon Rock, they knew it was about 150 miles to the Pacific Ocean.

This is such an epic site and the cinematography was epic enough to do it justice. One of these days I am going to get out west for a few months and this place is definitely on my list.
These videos are so well-made generally, so I feel bad saying this, but the animations are kind of a weak link. The lahar animation a few episodes back was especially poorly-done-in general the animations do not meet the high standards set by Nick with his best-in-class presenter and producer chops, the top-notch cinematography, and the amazing editing and production. In this case, for example, the “cinder cone” animation looked nothing like a cinder cone, nothing like what Nick was describing during the video with explosive pyroclastic cinder particles “popping” like a “popcorn machine” and raining down onto the diner to build its granular mass. Instead the animation was just a dull, red lump of what appeared to be solid rock, with no cinders on or around it, and none being erupted.
I am a long time graphic designer, illustrator, and animator, with a significant interest and several personal projects in the earth sciences. I have the skills and experience to do animations for video production, as well as a highly-developed interest in the subject matter and familiarity with the series and people involved in it. So I would be happy to put myself forward as a potential resource if you decide you’d like to improve animations going forward. But either way, I hope you consider my well-meaning critique. These videos are absolutely amazing-in every way except for the animations, and though it doesn’t completely undermine the overall communication and education behind the videos, it’s clear it could be better and these animations are used specifically to communicate and educate on the difficult concepts that must be visualized and can’t simply be talked out, good as Nick is at talking!
