I really hope I never looked at my phone when we hung out at conventions. I probably did. It's a nervous habit in social situations. I'm sorry if I did do that at any point.
I respect your reason for not having a phone, Doc. I do wonder though if owning one would also help with getting into voice acting. That would be one of my arguments as it's clearly a passion of yours.

That's not necessarily true since I gave up on smartphones a few years ago. If you have one, and want to have the power to separate from it for good, just take a hammer to the screen several times, and don't buy a replacement. Now, you can live your life cellphone free.

  • @adolfodef

I also never bought a cellphone. My family gave me their OLD smartphones [because they got a newer one] without the cellphone "chip" (that has the "number").
I use it as a very expensive mp3 player [tons of GB of space for all my music!].
The key is NOT HAVING THE CHOICE of "enable" internet_based services with a finger sweep.
-> If it is *impossible* for you to "cave" to sudden external social demands (or plain boredom), then there is no pressure.
The hard part is to explain it to others when _"Why do you hate me? Give me your number!"_ comes [as they simply do not believe that you will carry THE THING if it "does not work"].

I think that cell phones overall have been a detriment to people. For so many, including my father and myself, a cell phone means never being able to disconnect from work. You're always on-call, always stressing about each buzz or ring pulling you back to the rat-race. You lose your sense of autonomy in a lot of ways, as it allows companies to encroach into your personal time when you're finally supposed to have some peace and quiet. I've seen what that lack of a meaningful disconnect from work has done to mental health, and it's seriously harmful and draining.

I have a suggestion, maybe people have forgotten or possible are no longer aware that these exist in the first place. Flip phones still exist, you can even get a flip phone with no texting. It’s advised to have a call device in case of emergencies, say your on the road alone and you get into an accident or something happens, a cell phone can save your life. I completely understand not wanting a smartphone but you should at least have a flip phone for an emergency, you can even keep it turned off and leave it in your car as an emergency device. Also there’s a program that the US has where you can get a 911 cellphone only, it cannot do anything but call 911.

That’s actually understandable. at my old job as a delivery driver I used to have a GPS and I really didn’t need a smart phone until I was able to save up enough money to buy one. And It was fortunate because a couple of months later my GPS started to malfunction. Then I started using my phone to give me directions to my Destination. If you ask me it may be wise for you to get an old phone if it’s for those reasons you mentioned. But I do have a suggestion for you and you don’t have to apply to it. You could just buy the new cell phone but you don’t add those social media apps or anything you just made it a simple phone that will help you make any calls you need and give you directions from point A to point B. But like I said you don't have to apply. Besides I thought the reason Why you didn’t have a cell phone is for an entirely different reason.

Honestly, I want to be able to leave my phone at home.
Escpecially since I've gotten kind of addicted to it. But it's still in a controllable state, kind of.
The only reason why you "need" a phone, is so ppl can reach you. like parents or other family members. Or in case you yourself need to call 911.
But you don't need a smartphone for that. If you ever feel like getting a phone, get one of the flip phones. It's better, cause there are no apps, or something that sends notifications.
But if you feel like you don't want one, then don't get one. it's your life. Your money. Your decisions.

How I wish I can have this power. I prefer texting over talking sometimes, especially with strangers. Anxiety isn't fun. But I do remember a time when cellphones were really rare when I was young. Get a cell phone, don't get a cellphone, it's all up to you. I sit down with family and usually put my phone on the counter far away, it isn't really impossible. But while waiting in say the DMV, I like looking at my phone. Sure I like to bring a book but it's always one of those: well there's this other book i'm into to so. Also emergencies. I don't know, it took me back when you say you don't and may never have a phone.. but once upon a time that was true, no one had a cellphone just a landline. But it is up to you, and if you get it, it's up to you.
    Stay amazing Dr Wolf!

One thing I gotta admit is these days not having a cell phone is a lot harder than it used to be. We used to have pay phones at corner stores and gas stations, but most if not all of those are gone in most areas now. There are some people trying to keep them operational in some areas though. But it's all locally funded.

I can completely understand your reasons for not having a cell phone Dr. Wolf. My family has a second house in upstate NY where there isn't any cell service and I really enjoy it up there. We don't have 4G, TV unless you have a dish, or internet access. We have so many things to do other then be on our phones. And concerning the GPS feature on phones, there is something to be said about being able to read a map. While it may seem to be the most time consuming way to find your way to a destination, it is a great skill to have.

You're not wrong for not wanting a phone. People want to be constantly connected and it's not healthy. Look in front of you and around you, that is what is there. We'll take the risk with not having a phone in case of an emergency. I suspect checking your phone whilst driving causes far more problems than not having one but anyway it doesn't matter. Have faith, that's what people lack these days and they compensate for it with technology and the illusion of control and safety

It’s nice to see the other side of the conversation. I’ve recently got my first phone a few months ago and I just treat it as an extension of my tablet for storage and as a bonus to have a way of communicating with my family and friends and that’s it. Not really one for social media. I just use UA-cam, DeviantArt and some fanfic sites and that’s it.

I actually only got a cell phone when I legitimately needed one in late middle school. I was staying after school all the time for afterschool activities, and walking between my friend's houses all the time when I wasn't at school with no real way for my parents to call me and ask when I'd be home. The turning point was when me and a group of friends were walking home from the public library because we were doing a group project together, and right behind us, two cars crashed into each other. No one was hurt, but there was damage on the car, and it scared the daylights out of my parents when I called them from one of my friend's phones so that I could tell them why I would be a little late getting home.
At that point, my parents finally got me (and my older brother) a small flip phone, that was a minutes phone. And because they told me they would ONLY be refreshing the money on my phone once a month, and once it was gone, it was gone, people couldn't just contact me whenever they wanted. So, not saying you have to go the same route if you REALLY don't want once Doc, but this is a simple compromise for if you ever decide that you do want one. People wouldn't be able to contact you whenever they want for random little things, because it would be using up your minutes for trivial things. It would only be for the important things, where people absolutely need to get ahold of you.

I don’t have a phone ether. It was an accident at first. But now I don’t want one. My best friend has to have his all the time. I swear to Luna he is losing his ability to retain his own knowledge. Whenever we’re discussing random stuff he always has to check if for an answer, see if I’m right are wrong. As a result he isn’t really taking part in the conversation. He’s just reading from a screen, not taking in the actual info. So I understand.

21 currently here. Never had a smartphone, never wanted one. Them things really can be a burden to society. All the time, I see people (namely my family, more often than not) just sitting down, looking on there A LOT! Not that it's really that bad in small doses, but if you keep that up, I'd even compare it to, say, drugs or alcohol. For some, unfortunately, that's how bad it can be. I'm just trying to steer clear from that temptation. A few years ago, I tried using a minute phone for emergencies only, but even then, at least half the days a week on average, I don't go out anywhere. I mean, don't get me wrong, I still use technology (typing this on a PC currently, and I have a few tablets that I use, but they almost never leave my bedroom), but only when I'm alone. Honestly, it's probably been a year at least since I last touched the thing. All in all, phones in general are a cancer on our society in my opinion. I've even prayed for a world without em a long time ago (oh, wouldn't THAT be the dream lol), but clearly, that's not happening. And in case someone runs into this, let me just say: try not to attack me, and please try and see things this way. I still find my entertainment through technology, I just don't let it become me, if that makes sense. I think society would be a better place if everyone could just try and go for a small period of time without their phones and contemplate what their experiences are/were with vs without said phones. I highly recommend everyone who watched the vid and then read this paragraph of a comment to try this out. At some point, I would love to meet someone else in person that does the same thing I do, but that has never happened (save for some children, but that's for obvious reasons lol). It seems no matter where I go, someone has one or someone pressures me into getting one (that's happened several times over the years as well). I'd love to change that one day.

A well-thought-out critique to our cellphone-addicted culture. And you happened to mention the possible compromise of using a dumbphone JUST when I was about to comment in that vein.
Personally, since you're not living totally alone and since you're always around people who DO have smartphones, I think that you can still survive without one. You already have ways to contact those whom you need to contact, and in an emergency, it would tell more about the passersby than about you if they don't stop to help.
That's one of the things I like about you, Doc: you take the time to think and to consider. You live; you don't just exist. And I fear that THAT is one of the things that we are prone to lose of we don't have the discipline to fight back: we are prone to lose the capability to just LIVE, WITHOUT worrying about posting things on Twitter or Facebook for others' validation. We ought to live IRL, not through our phones.
It's an irony, however, that I both saw the video and am typing this comment on a cellphone.

I understand the addiction and the distraction and how it can limit the physical senses but I can thank a phone for opening my shell in a way.
My phone introduced me to the fandom when all my younger brothers hogged the computer. It gave me an infinite sheet to write and share poetry on. The videos I've watched though indeed addicting at times gave me solitude, information, and a sense of belonging when I felt no one listens or cares. It extended my ability to help and talk to others and coaxed me out of shell of distrust and anger.
I am learning to live without it as I prepare for my mission and I'm making time to be alone without it. I have never been a fan of notifications and mute most of them. However, I cannot deny the gift it allowed me to find. Heck, I'm amazed when people follow me. A phone is a danger but it is also a blessing. Learning how to control it is a challenge but once you do, it can open up the world.
I know you will never get one and that's not the purpose of this writing. It's to show that at least for me, I would not have discovered myself without others and a phone helped me find those people and myself. It's not a permanent thing but a helpful tool.
P.S. A phone currently helps me practice my singing and poetry, memorizing songs and improving notes or rhymes. And mostly, it's to engage in conversation and leatn about the world so that I can learn to improve it through my writing.

For me, while yes I can’t live without my iPad either but at least on a daily basis I don’t take it where ever I go like walking my dog, or doing chores or going into town or an adventure…unless I plan to go out and film trains since I’m a foamer so yeah when theirs trains about that’s when I would take it with me and record some when necessary but for other stuff which is what I just said, I leave it as well as my other technology in their stationary places at my house when I’m doing something else and come back to it later, and I also do take it to the kitchen table when it’s just me but when it’s family get togethers I leave it where it is, and back then I used to take it to the bathroom and when I’m walking my dog whenever I’m uploading something or whatever, thank god I stopped doing those stupid decisions. To sum up it up, I do need my iPad for the sake of UA-cam and other stuff but when I’m out in the world and doing something else I leave it alone…unless if it’s railfanning time lol

I for one do not have a cellphone anymore, too many distractions on it. Even though I had many apps on it at that time. My wife has a cellphone, but does not really use it like it is intended to be used. Basically she uses it to see youtube videos, listen to music, play her 'Candy Crush 'Friends'" games along with Bingo. Since I am on her laptop most of the time and I have an Ipad 'Refurbished' from the one of the workers here at the facility I am residing in. And recently my wife just received a Christmas gift from the same worker of an Ipad 'New" to play with. Cellphones are important for any critical situations, but best to say to whom you are meeting face to face not to engage in the use of it while conversing with you, nor have them operate at the dining table during eating and/or conversing. When I used to have a cellphone, I basically used it to make or receive calls and at times, but not all the time play a few games on it. I resolved myself to not having one since I could not afford it anymore, even though I was in a program where I got the cellphone for free and the service to go with it(but had to make a call once a month in order to have the service continue. So I lapsed in not making a single call in a month, then the service was cancelled and I had nothing but a glorified pocket watch. When I oved into this facility, I did not bring that cellphone with me, and resolved to not have one until further notice. I will always go by the Discord, UA-cam, Facebook, and if it still works messaging apps like YahooMessenger, PalTalk. Thank you reading/listening to me. Your friend and UA-cam viewer, Allen.

I'm in a long distance relationship so I need my phone for that. I use it at night to play videos/audio to help me get to sleep, I can flip it over and keep the light from shining in my face. I use it as a mobile camera and while I was doing photo shoots of my pets I would use it as a mobile flashlight when I couldn't find one. It's pretty nifty at night when I need a flashlight as well. I need it for music at work or when I'm out and about to keep from getting overloaded with random noises. Just ear plugs you can still hear everything and they don't help as much with a sensory overload. Noise cancelling headphones are just expensive. I would definitely call my cell phone reliance as more of a tool to deal with everything I have to handle daily rather than an addiction to a piece of technology. I guess it just depends on how you utilize it.

Though having that said I do own a smart phone but have never used it for anything else than as an alarm, calender, flashling, calculator as well as making a call or two a week and sending a hands full off texts. And using a service without internet cuts the price in half compared to one with internet. (8euro/month.)
Also as long as you take care of it then you can expect a not very expesive (mine costed around a 128 euro new) to last six years but having to having to replace the battery every year or three depending on use. (only needed the replace mine two years ago because it dropped out of my pocket while talking a walk braking the battery contacts.)

Yeah, I think I can definitely understand that. Not wanting to be sucked into the phone world, I mean. I personally think that feeling the need to respond to texts can vary a lot by who the person is and what your general approach to when you text back is. There are plenty of people I'll only text when I need to get in contact with them so I'll get a text from that group maybe once a week. There are also some people I text who might text me several times a day. It's your choice who you choose to talk with and how you respond.

A simple flip phone from TracFone is quite cheap, if not free. Honestly, I can understand your concerns. I've lived most of my younger years without a cellphone. And have sometimes even forgotten my primary cellphone at home or had it die on me. I have an old flip phone, that the back screen is cracked, tethered to a clip that clips onto my belt loop, off, unless I need to use it in case of an emergency. Due to the fact that I have a seizure disorder, I find comfort in knowing that I can contact others incase of an emergency, or if my primary phone dies. Sometimes. I occasionally forget to turn it off and/or charge it. I have even left my tech at home just to get away from it, with the exception of the flip phone, which I still leave off. When I am out and about I usually use my phone for music or to watch videos or to take pictures that I can easily share. I am not very social so I don't use Facebook or Twitter often unless it is to share something with someone. Often times when I find something interesting when I am out and about, I'll take a picture or a video. Though I usually show it to them in person. A cellphone is like any other technology, it isn't good or bad, it just matters how you use it.
