Yeah, kinda makes me glad the Activision deal didn't went through, to be honest. And I was on team MS for that. They just don't seem to care about the stuff they put out, no pride whatsoever. Why should they be allowed to buy good games to offset that? No, they need to take a moment to reflect and start prioritizing quality over everything else, like Sony has done for the past decade.
I feel its just the game pass effect on some of those game like this feels like they are ok with it just being released as fodder for the pass and be below average games at least if you tried it on gamepass it's not bad you can get your hours of fun in but a full priced game it's another example of waiting on games now since the gaming industry as a whole seems to have no problems releasing games broken and only to be patched weeks to months after.
Reboot of Arx Fatalis is never gonna happen. That was an OG arkane Lyon thing. Most of the devs have moved on and aren't around. You won't find the Arx Fatalis we all want, even rebooted. I truly believe Arkane is dead after DeathLoop, you could still find a bit of the vibe there but it was already feeling watered down.
I was really curious to see what you actually thought, given that you were one of the sponsored streamers that were being paid to promote the game by Bethsoft. Nice to see you give your honest impressions.
When I first saw Cohh's thoughts videos I didn't think I'd end up watching them religiously as I now do. He's a really good reviewer. I'm very sad about this game - and my bar isn't set so high, I loved Dead Island 2 even. Prey 2017 is one of my favourite games ever in terms of worldbuilding and exploration, I seriously hope Arkane make an enormous comeback with a stellar Prey 2.
Saw Bahroo dive into it right after you and Goth finished your sponsored stream, he got through the whole game in just under 9 hours total. He went with "exceptionally mediocre", and both your definitions really seem to fit the bill. I'm convinced the fact that this came out on Game Pass is literally the only reason it launched, if they only had the $70 minimum to go with, they'd be refunding it across the board. Well, more than they already are.
Redfall has *no* redeeming qualities. *None.* And we can all name two for everyone's favorite fuhrer. Stache and drip. No attempt was made to hide the zero f's given in every facet of the design. Here's the *only* thing you haven't seen after an hour of play. Theres only 2 of each gun type, just different colors and levels. Theres maybe 150 enemies on the entire map, and I don't think they respawn. I played 6 hours before tapping out. I ran from one side of the map to another, 0 enemies. I did 2 back to back story missions, 0 enemies. And every side or story mission comes in 2 flavors. Vanilla or vegan gluten-free no sugar organic vanilla-bean iced dessert sludge. Its go to x and either shoot a stationary target (because this game has no AI. Just A.) or grab random item for reasons. Thats it. Not lying. *Every* mission is that. And again, the world is empty. If you have been anywhere near these locations prior, then your mission is going to an empty house to pick up a thing, then thats it. Mission over. If its a 'boss' (normal enemy with a glowy aura and zero other differences) then he's just gonna be all alone, waiting for you to finish it. He won't even leave the house when you starts shottying him through a window. He did miss one thing by stopping early, though. Vampire nests. The only new thing. And god they are awful. Its a b-movie from the 80's swirly glowy door that randomly appears and creates an ugly blue aura in a growing radius, being many streets wide. Its supposed to make vampires stronger. But there arent any enemies, so... its just an annoying, ugly blue filter over everything. The nest is a weird straight line thats 400 meters of copy pasted crap. (blatantly. You'll see the exact same 50-foot section 3 or 4 times per nest.) But they're also super annoyingly BS. Narrow long corridor. They put 8 vampires in a cluster. You can't stealth by them, its not possible. They all charge you at once, and the narrow passage means you can't strafe. So you get stunlocked into oblivion. But hey, death is meaningless. You actually spawn in a room right near where you died. Just a whole-ass closet, hidden in the out-of-bounds in the map. Clearly, stuck there as a hotfix to get through the glitchy cheese-vamps. Kill one vamp, die. Kill another, die. Once they're down to 3 or 4, its managable. Now do that twice. For every nest. The boss room now. Its.... A flesh lump that doesn't move or attack. No enemies. You just interact 3 times and poof. Then the fun starts. Your reward. The screen starts having a seizure and you have 30 seconds to shoot wall pimples and go into them for loot. Now... what kind of loot? Why, the exact same randomized garbage you can find in every house on the map, of course. And how do you get it? Prayer. Because first, you can't see *sheeyit.* The flashlight almost makes it worse. Second, you have the aiming controls. Big deadzone, big acceleration. Like having a gas pedal that you can press halfway down before it gives any gas. You don't *aim* in Redfall. You point in a general direction and sidestep. Add to that the shaky, flashing screen, and your only option is to look at your feet and waddle in circles, spamming X and hoping you grab something before the timer runs out and you just get pooped out into the overworld again. And... here's the *best* part. I cleared all 3 off the map. By the time I cleared the 3rd, the first *respawned.* So I did that one again. And the game glitched loading me into the overworld, under the map. I fell for a split second, then crash. Restarted the game to see if it counted me clearing that nest, and *all three* nests were back. Nope. Done. Never playing it again. A stupid mobile gacha game has more heart and soul than Redfall. More boobs too. Redfall was sorely lacking in the mammary department as well, except for that lanky, freaky but somehow disgustingly bangable vampire...god...angel...thing. Like, come on man.OG tomb raider was a clunky, glitchy fustercluck. But we had sharp, triangular chesticles to admire at least. This game couldn't even spare 4 polygons from its freeware 2010 stock asset graphics for some bouncy zomboobies. It redfailed in every category of gaming. Not exaggerating. Forget no cap. No hair. Thats the bald truth.
Remind me, when was the last time a game that Microsoft was involved with good and met expectations? Not trying to bash here, just honestly can't remember anything more recent than the initial games of the halo franchise.
I think I saw your tweet the other day about Redfall that really gave me a good laugh by calling it "aggressively mid" glad you kicked off this video with it 😂
I avoided everything about Redfall because I wanted to go in blind. I had no idea it was anywhere near as bad as it was. I downloaded it when it released, played for like 1.5 hours and was extremely disappointed and instantly told my friend to not bother getting it. I am probably going to try and get a steam refund on it. I expected better from Arcane. I can only hope Starfield doesn't flop this hard, but at this point I have no faith in Microsofts game quailty.
Oh Cohh. We're old... I was born in 80, but even I know the definition of "Mid" ...which isn't middle. Here you go: "According to Urban Dictionary, the slang "mid" is used to describe something or someone as below average or low quality. It can be used as an insult or to oppose the opinion of another. In other words, "mid" can be used as a replacement for "boring," "not good," "mediocre," "low quality," among others."
This game screams ME Andromeda to me, I wouldn't be surprised if they dicked around in pre production and/or rebooted the project multiple times because they didn't have a cohesive vision for what this game was supposed to be and this was thrown together at the last minute. It would explain why this game feels like a trend chaser.
For anyone surprised why he is wanting to finish the game it's because he still loves Arkane and has hope that there is some glimpse of the old Arkane somewhere Basically he's hopped up on copium which can be hard to drop if you're a big fan of the people making something just look at Blizzard fans Etc
He's also making money from all the people coming to watch how much of a trainwreck the game is. At this point it's in kind of a so good it's bad state.
No exceptions here, but i would like to point out that dishonored and prey had some pretty crippling bugs on launch. If i remember correctly dishonored 2 had some wild fps issues, and prey had a bug that randomly nuked your save. I even refunded prey due to encountering said issue. Amazing games, but this studio has always had issues and now their ambition has just hilighted some bad internal processes.
I agree with pretty much everything you said except that this is NOW the level of quality of games we can expect from Microsoft going forward. As if this is their first misstep. Unfortunately, it is not.
I'm too lazy to do this, but what people should do is look at the Credits of Prey (also made by Arkane Austin) and compare that to the people who made Redfall. It might be by the same studio, but I'll bet my last dollar that the personnel have changed significantly - I'd wager less than half of those who made prey were still at Arkane when this was made. And I agree Cohh - don't try to save this game. No one will come back to it. Kill it and be done.
This game wasn’t made to be sold, it was made for game pass. I’ve always been a big supporter of game pass but Redfall feels like a consequence of the subscription service model. It’s similar to Netflix and their originals, they’re fine but they won’t blow you away. PlayStation is HBO while Xbox is Netflix, both can be good but they’re just different approaches.
Pentiment was made for Gamepass. It's a niche kind of game that everyone might want to try out but not everyone would drop $20 on. THIS is very different. People should be happy to spend at least $60 on this studio's latest game. Gamepass should feel like a deal, not a bargain bin.
@@ericmm6822 Totally agree w you. I think people misled themselves with their own expectations for Redfall. I could tell it wasn’t going to be the typical Arkane blockbuster. It might just be me but I’m a little confused by the disappointment surrounding this game, I though it was obvious what this game was gonna end up being.
I agree with a good chunk of your statements here. It's definitely a standard "Stupid-Fun" style game, instead of an "Experience" style game that Arkane usually gives. And DEFINITELY shouldn't cost $70. That said, I will also counter-argue that Arkane games (including the first Dishonored) historically don't do well at launch. It's only after each title secured their niche audiences (and the games' bugs were patched) that they really got their reputations. Case and point, look at Deathloop and Prey. Those two games were bashed to hell as being mediocre at launch, and didn't get followings until about a year after they released. I do wish Microsoft wouldn't have firm on the release date though. If the game had even a month more in the oven, it would have been better off.
I haven't really followed the development of this game.. But the last game Arkane developed, which I believe was Prey.. Was before the MS acquisition of Bethesda. Do we think that acquisition has anything to do with any of these decisions? How did Arkane go from Prey and Dishonored.. To this?
Raphael Colantino left the studio after Prey released. He was the creative lead for Prey and Dishonored and I believe had been with Arkane since the beginning. Him leaving a long with whomever else left with him to make his new studio and Weird West appears to have had a huge impact on the studio.
They were already working on Redfall before the acquisition. Now it's possible that Bethesda pressured them to make this kind of game, because their previous games, despite being amazing, weren't the best sellers unfortunately. But there's no way to know for sure.
@@CrazyxEnigma They still have Harvey Smith though, whose resume goes all the way back to classics like System Shock and Deus Ex, and Ricardo Bare, who was there for Dishonored and their other great games. There's still a lot of talent left at the studio, which is why it's so sad to see it squandered on a project like this.
What's sad is I've run into videos of people saying "Hey, stop hating on this game! Don't listen to the streamers, the game is good!". Like...no it isn't. Let me add that if you like this game, that's fine. But let's not pretend that the game IS bad.
Warm take: the game was priced at $70 to get people sub to Game Pass, so even if Redfall is kinda ass, there's plenty of other game to play anyway. Another one: there is a pretty big market for "mid games" and from what i've seen the game is not that awful, and is well above pretty much anything else in the said market (B4B, Evil Dead, WWZ - imo fall into this category).
I can't remember the last time (if ever) Cohh has said to a dev studio to abandon a game. Just goes to show you how bad it is and how much we expect better. A sad day indeed.
Worth noting Bethesda retain a lot more pipeline control unlike their counterparts under XBS' umbrella. With all eyes now on Starfield, for better or worse, there's bound to be a internal restructure.
Thanks Arkane, Bethesda and MS for making me nervous about Starfield. I honestly can't believe they released this in this state, esp. after the debacle that was FO76.
You go to a restaurant and order a fillet mignon and get a steak that wasn't cooked enough and when you complain get told you're entitled lol. Some people man.
Microsoft/Xbox have been doing the little things right for years. They have Game Pass, a slightly "stronger system" in the Series X vs the PS5, they integrate features with backwards compatibility, 1440p support, Discord support (although PS5 has it now), better VRR support vs PS5, they're quicker to implement 60FPS/120FPS upgrades over Sony. I'm sure there are several other things I am missing as well. The point is, all the QOL stuff, Xbox nails it. There's so many little things with Sony that bug the hell out of me. Having said all that, over the same time span roughly, Xbox has not released ANY memorable exclusives that are good games. What do they have? Halo and like Gears of War? 10 plus years ago those games were incredible. We can sit here and list off at least 10 exclusive Sony games that have been bangers, and maybe 1 to 3 for Xbox. At the end of the day, it comes down to the games. And if Starfield ends up not being good (which I think it will be awesome, I built a PC specifically for it), all these billions of dollars they spend on acquisitions and exclusivity are MEANINGLESS.
People expected this game to have cutscenes, unique side-quests, or great unique mechanics because of the trailer or $70 price tag. Of course, Arkane are these illustrious devs who make great immersive sims but it feels like for the first time, they were given a job to make a AAA game designed by Xbox or not by them. Feels like the devs were not into this game at all. Conspiracy theory: $70 price tag is because Xbox wants people to buy the Game Pass 🤑.
Don't know why anyone expected Microsoft to release a stable product. All you have to do is look at the atrocious releases of the most recent Halo games to understand Microsoft doesn't care anymore.

Completely agree. Spot on Cohh. I hope MS are watching.
It's wild that they've announced that they've got 2 more characters coming out...
Aggressively mid for a $70 game doesn’t cut it in this market.😅
I love your work, Cohh.
I really do.
Thanks for being amazingg!!!
(blatantly. You'll see the exact same 50-foot section 3 or 4 times per nest.)
But they're also super annoyingly BS.
Cohh just summed up my feelings on AAA game studios in general. Mediocre is the new standard
Remind me, when was the last time a game that Microsoft was involved with good and met expectations? Not trying to bash here, just honestly can't remember anything more recent than the initial games of the halo franchise.
Great review and objective analysis.
11:28 This hit hard. Damn. 😔 Very good in-depth review, @cohhcarnage.
I think I saw your tweet the other day about Redfall that really gave me a good laugh by calling it "aggressively mid" glad you kicked off this video with it 😂
Good review, Cohh. Thank you for your honesty.
I’d argue they never had intelligent ai just good level design
Very well put together points. Nobody else pointed out these things this clearly.
This game screams ME Andromeda to me, I wouldn't be surprised if they dicked around in pre production and/or rebooted the project multiple times because they didn't have a cohesive vision for what this game was supposed to be and this was thrown together at the last minute. It would explain why this game feels like a trend chaser.
damn, that message at the end. Like a dad telling their child to just put down their sick goldfish :(.
Speaking of aggressive, Cohh's thoughts only got more aggressive as the video went on, down right savage by the end. Not wrong, but savage.
I hope people wont buy starfield until we know it is good, but the hype will probably never stop.
For anyone surprised why he is wanting to finish the game it's because he still loves Arkane and has hope that there is some glimpse of the old Arkane somewhere
Basically he's hopped up on copium which can be hard to drop if you're a big fan of the people making something just look at Blizzard fans Etc
He's also making money from all the people coming to watch how much of a trainwreck the game is. At this point it's in kind of a so good it's bad state.
the last message really hurts. to move on.
I am something of a dead horse myself.
Isn't Arkane Austin like a secondary studio? I thought Arkane Lyon is the main studio that is behind the Prey, but I might be wrong.
I read every thing I could get my hands on while playing Prey, i read about 3 notes in Redfall in 4 hours played cause I just couldn’t be bothered
I am in awe of his restraint frankly ;)
I agree with pretty much everything you said except that this is NOW the level of quality of games we can expect from Microsoft going forward. As if this is their first misstep. Unfortunately, it is not.
You’re right, it’s happened with Halo, Grounded and and Sea of Thieves before. It’s the GamePass model.
@@kraenk12 Grounded was an early access and at a lower price than when it was release post early access. The rest weren't though.
Whoever gave greenlight to this should SERIOUSLY be reconsidered from their position.
Spencer needs to go for releasing this mess!
Cohh trying real hard to give this game a 5/10
Agree except for the last part. I want the ai fixed, loot system and skill tree system overhauled, end game, and more weapon variety.
I don't think it's mid, think it's just bad.
Yeah well it's like Coh said, we were expecting xbox to whip these developers into shape but it's data just became a money grab apparently
@@WilliamDuh well hindsight is 20/20. But yes the trailers that played during twitch streams ads turned me OFF the game.....
Halo, Grounded, Sea of Thieves. All were unfinished at launch!!!
I like how honest cohh is and positive - his thoughts videos are the best, in my opinion, for people wondering if they should invest in a video game
Really well spoken on this video. I also love Arkane still and believe they can do better.
Microsoft want return on their investment. But in green flagging a product like this, they are treating gamers with complete disrespect.
Get us a non ubisoft Dark messiah. That game was sick.
I feel like around the 8:00 mark it should've come to the attention of gamer's with Halo Infinite's release.
What's sad is I've run into videos of people saying "Hey, stop hating on this game! Don't listen to the streamers, the game is good!". Like...no it isn't.
Let me add that if you like this game, that's fine. But let's not pretend that the game IS bad.
Thank the UK for stopping microsoft from buying activision-blizzard.
Awesome words. To the point and no flowers on it. Prey 2 please.
Fair and good review, like the honesty.
Thanks for the brutally honest review, Cohh. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks Marcus! \o/
wowowow that ending tho, harsh but fair!
The only thought I had was deleting it from my hard drive
Warm take: the game was priced at $70 to get people sub to Game Pass, so even if Redfall is kinda ass, there's plenty of other game to play anyway.
Another one: there is a pretty big market for "mid games" and from what i've seen the game is not that awful, and is well above pretty much anything else in the said market (B4B, Evil Dead, WWZ - imo fall into this category).
Prey was mind-blowing (watched Gopher play it) and I loved Dishonored.
good one cohh. well summarized.
On-point review, thank you!
After this disaster some managers have to lose their job.
Its simple, this is a rushed game just to add it to game pass.Hope its not the final nail on Arcane's coffin.
If Starfield drops with the same amount of problems that this one does ... oh boy.
You’ll see..Starfield will just be as empty and half finished. Just GamePass fodder!
Thanks Arkane, Bethesda and MS for making me nervous about Starfield. I honestly can't believe they released this in this state, esp. after the debacle that was FO76.
If coca cola released a new flavor and it sucked, people wouldn't defend it saying hey it's not so bad, no it's just bad and no one wants it
You go to a restaurant and order a fillet mignon and get a steak that wasn't cooked enough and when you complain get told you're entitled lol. Some people man.
I was hoping for something vampire themed to fill the void of vampire the masquerade bloodlines 2
Cohh looks like a younger version of my dad.
Cohh you NEED to play Age of Wonders 4! It just came out and is AMAZING!
Nice take, I appreciate the review and honestly. (passing on this game)
Does a game this middle of the ground really need to be always online?
Unfiltered review starts at 11:30
Don't know why anyone expected Microsoft to release a stable product. All you have to do is look at the atrocious releases of the most recent Halo games to understand Microsoft doesn't care anymore.
