The first time I remember seeing cancel culture, and going "WTF?" was when Christian Bale was recorded yelling while filming that Terminator movie. I kept seeing all this outrage, saying "Christian Bale owes everyone an apology!", and thought "why would Christian Bale owe me an apology? I don't know that guy. Sounds like he just had a stressful day at work". Michael Richard's happened around then too.
That's not cancel culture. From the video: "No one is saying you shouldn't be allowed to criticize celebrities..." Cancel culture would be if Christian Bale got blacklisted and couldn't work again. Or, if someone expressed an opinion supporting Bale's behavior and was subsequently blacklisted. Edit: ~23 minute mark
@@orppranator5230 I agree it's a complicated issue, but yes that's basically correct. One has to have a sense of proportionality. Expressing an opinion is protected. Causing harm is not. That's why you cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theater, even though it's "just speech." Beyond that though, the case is made in the video that it's a counterproductive behavior anyway. Christian Bale would never be cancelled. He's too lucrative. The no-name actor or key grip or whomever that expresses support for Bale is the one who's likely to actually be blacklisted. Cancel culture doesn't "shame" bad actors, it punishes empathy. Edit: And, to be clear it's not "making him apologize." Demanding an apology is expressing an opinion. If the police jailed him for failure to apologize, *that* would be force

One can say crime is preceded by some speech of some sort so we need to investigate. The UK never had freedom of speech. That's what happens when you don't revolt. We actually have it in the US... for now.
Ever since, in the 1970’s, in San Francisco, they spoke of “hate crime” when referring to “gay bashing” I thought “isn’t that just assault and battery?” Only murder had gradations based on motive. Now if you would apply those rules, hate crimes could be “crimes of passion.” I was just a teen but I was concerned even then. Turned out gay bashing wasn’t mostly done by white suburban kids but Latino and black gangs who drove to the Castro and beat up and robbed gay men leaving bathhouses.
What this guy gets wrong is thinking that you can have a state which has a monopoly on several services, from defense, policing to much of banking, healthcare etc. and not always end up, given enough time, to the very same situation of freedom going extinct. Authoritarianism and tyrannical rule is not the exception, it's the rule, the very nature of government. All we've been able to do is keep it at bay for certain periods of time, and even that at great financial cost. Authoritarianism is cyclical. Keeping a government is like keeping a dog which bit your hand on more than one occasion. And if keeping wolves away is what you aim for, keeping a bigger wolf in with the sheep to scare the other wolves away isn't a solution, it's always only a matter of time before the wolf gets hungry.
The old Fable of the scorpion and the frog comes to mind here. Trusting the government to police itself is inherently a fool's mission. The nature of government is to expand. The people who go into government are normally well intentioned, but this actually creates a higher danger because they believe they know what is best for the population at Large. The larger the state, and the larger the apparatus controlling the state, the more you will see the crises. They believe that we are not able to tell what is best for us. Thus they are inherently dispose to removing our rights. The second article of our Bill of Rights is honestly the canary in the coal mine. The government knows very well that people who have weapons can resist. The thus it has always been one of the first things you will see eroded. If you look at the district square these attacks on the other rights are happening, the great majority of them are primarily disarmed. Countries like Great Britain where even a knife is now a registered weapon have already began policing what is called by Orwell thought crime... Or in present police logs non crime events. Events where an actual crime was not committed, but someone might have been thinking about it. It is amusing that only a decade ago we were aware of the danger of this. I think of the film minority report. Tom Cruise actually funded that film to discuss over policing. At this point he is not physically or mentally able to identify a problem with over-policing... So long as the police are doing the right thing. The idea that we cannot permit Free speech among certain sets of people because their ideas are hurtful to the population at Large... Well the last time we did this it devolved into the Red scare. People being rendered incapable of working or even being in prison for the crime of possibly thinking the government was incorrect. At that time the government overstepped and the people responded. Eventually forcing them to recant from their activities. The same is no longer the case, as governments around the world take actions which are obviously a danger... But the press who decades ago would have led the uprising against them now speak of how these actions are important to our democracy. I'm well aware that eventually my habit of monologuing on every blog site that I can find will render me incapable of having a job. I have no intention of stopping because it's for my safety. When it starts happening I will be well aware that it is time for me to leave. And it is the reason why I keep a residency Visa in a foreign country. I have no intention of winding up as happened so many times before. A historian can see the clouds on the horizon. But is extraordinarily hard to see the fire under the clouds until it gets closer. It is when you start feeling the heat that the decision must be made... Surrender... Die... Fight... Or run
People are sheep through. You could no more hope to change human nature than you could physically change a sheep into a wolf. The only realistic thing we can do is chain up the wolf and train it. The best way forward is to educate sheep while also restraining the wolf. Its a continuous effort. Just as a farm needs constant maintenance, so does society. There are always wolves outside the farm, if you get rid of ours, they will come and take over.
@@Jimraynor45 the goal is not to remove the wolf, but to educate the sheep. A flock of sheep and a flock of goats are almost identical externally. But heaven help the wolf that attacks a flock of goats. The goal is never to restrain those who could not be restrained. As our founding fathers said, democracy is two wolves and a sheep discussing what's for dinner. A republic is an armed sheep disputing the decision. The original laws said that every man who could be a citizen, basically anyone who was not a slave or a criminal, was a member of the militia from the time he came of age. This was not discussed and there were no exceptions. Every single property owning man, whether he owned a hundred acre Farm or a shack in the woods, was a member of the militia... And was expected to have a firearm. Honestly the first time we start seeing any gun laws whatsoever was when they realized that slaves might disagree with being slaves. For the first 50 years or so, we were too busy resisting being British to really ask if you should have a firearm.

This was leveraged to start programs of censorship in social media and in public discourse generally that continues to expand, serving only the powerful, as it was always meant to do. About thirty years ago, when I was a kid, I saw a girl at another table in a restaurant and said to a friend, "look at her, she's really hot." A self-styled feminist at my table overheard me and proceeded to yell at me for making such a statement, accusing me of "objectifying another human being," but refused to discuss it when mildly contested. Small anecdote from 1992, but since then it has only steadily become part of the mainstream, the attack on any voice, any comment, any joke -- funny, unfunny, bland, or dirty, any mild critique, any flattering comment, or harsh attack, any expression of an opinion that someone somewhere might feel offended by. It is made worse these days by the people who wake up each morning leave their houses searching for ways to be offended, all subjectively based with the attitude, "it's your problem if I'm offended." Being a white male conservative, it means nothing to me, of course, I've been the villain all my life -- the black hat with a black heart and a white face. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens' What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Millennials were born between 1981-1996. The world uses stereotypes and speaks in generalities because that’s how the mind works. It categorizes and assigns these labels as a shortcut. Most people realize that terms like this mean “in general this group has these characteristics and we know not all of this group has these traits”. And most people are wrong. For example, Baby boomers in the late 60s were considered to be rebellious rude ungrateful gits, but it’s estimated that less than 25% of that generation held these traits. Then like now, it’s the most vocal that determine what others outside that group ascribe as their general traits. It’s rarely the best traits that are used in these stereotypes and it’s unfair, but it happens to all generations. My parents were from the “silent generation”. They were said be the ones that kept their head down and worked hard and didn’t stick up for themselves when treated unfairly. I’m a Gen X. We are either forgotten, mislabeled by millennials as boomers while the boomers used to call us slackers. Elon Musk is the most famous Gen X right now. Most of the popular tools and toys on the internet were developed by “slacker” Gen X. These labels are like nicknames your older brothers and sisters give you, partly to kid you and partly to remind you of your weaknesses that you have taken pride in. They are used both ways and sometimes in the same breath. So don’t sweat it. Later, you will wear it like a badge and label your kids with one other own and they will be irritated with you for it. And you will smile a bit when they aren’t looking and feel a bit closer to them for that feeling.
Word. There is also a lot of precedent in evolutionary biology for stereotyping. Imagine early man NOT stereotyping each poisonous snake or individual sabertooth cat they came across: “Hmmm literally every single one I’ve ever encountered in my entire life has instantaneously tried to kill me but Ill give THIS one the benefit of the doubt. I wonder how much of my head I can fit in its mouth?” Would have ended poorly...
I am a “boomer” ex-hippie chic liberal. What does concern me is the lockstep anti-liberal twist on things many of my old friends have adopted. I am still a “liberal” albeit a Jeffersonian liberal.
Why does everyone forget to recommend A Brave New World. This novel is more prophetic than 1984 in that authority uses pleasure as a means of social control
When you can present yourself as a victim, you can demand to be lifted by government. Loosing becomes winning, as easy as war becomes peace and freedom becomes slavery. Failure is success (bailouts). Violence and coercion puts everything upside down.
So... those speeches Hitler used to make were just off color banter? Just because cancel culture exists and pedantic liberal thought police are taking advantage of things doesn't mean that "hate speech" isn't a thing. The real question is the proper way to deal with it, and blanket censorship is the worst way to approach any problem of this sort.

Millennials were the first generation with “helicopter parents”. They were protected from any possible physical danger(even skinned knees or a splinter), emotional pain or feelings they didn’t enjoy. They were all given trophies because losing would hurt their feelings. This prevented any personal growth or any real understanding of the real world. Once they left home and went to college the university became their new parents. Professors continued to vomit in their little bird mouths the same philosophy their parents had taught them that all that matters is their feelings. Since they never mentally aged they accepted any stupid theory or propaganda they heard that said their feelings are always right. They now “feel” others don’t have a right to say anything that could ever possibly be offensive to them. Hence, free speech is the evil thing that allows others to say the truth and this hurts their feelings. Of course they have the right to offend people who don’t think and act exactly the way they do. 4 generations from the greatest generation to the worst!
Where did crap come from? You can't tell me that every parent of such a large portion of a generation decided to melt their children down and recast as weeble-wobbles in a bubble. This kind of trend has a strongly defined eye of tremendously low pressure. This crap had an architect.
I didn't get the helicopter parent, but I get the reasoning why this has happened. We grew up with parent that were often racist or homophobic and placed those ideas in to our little, forming personalities. Some of us had to come to terms with having those ideas ourselves. Dump ALL incumbents. Free speech does not need government to hush it up. Neighbors and families are trying everyday to shut your trap, lest something sensible spill out.
Having an enshrined right (a right that is protected from government overreach) is incredibly important, and I feel bad for people who live in countries where they aren't afforded those protections. The 1st and 2nd are the safeguards to all other rights which are not granted by the constitution, as they are natural rights afforded to all humans at birth.
What's frightening is that these rights are increasingly under attack in America. The 1st amendment doesn't say that freedom of speech should be censored. The Biden administration wants to set up a 'Ministry of Truth'. That doesn't fit together. The constant attacks on free speech scare me.

Great logic
@@leechowning2712 you just decribe this in the best way possible

"Nobody has the right to not be offended. That right doesn't exist in any declaration I have ever read." - Salman Rushdie
This has been going on for a long time, it's funny how some folks are only waking (woking up?) to it now.
As John McLane would say, "welcome to he party pal."

You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens' What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with." - Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, 1957.

Well said.

I was born in the early 60s and don't at all enjoy being labeled as a boomer in the same generation as my own mother. I find it ridiculous.

I think it's got something to do with 1984 being more "scary" on the surface.
I think cancel culture should be thrown in the bin. That is hateful.
When you can present yourself as a victim, you can demand to be lifted by government. Loosing becomes winning, as easy as war becomes peace and freedom becomes slavery. Failure is success (bailouts). Violence and coercion puts everything upside down.
There's no such thing as hate speech. It's just speech that people hate to hear.
It is disturbing how upset and hysterical these people get. It naked me so angry
I agree 100%. Its mind control through language. I knew when i heard the term for the first time that it would be trouble.
So... those speeches Hitler used to make were just off color banter?

I didn't get the helicopter parent, but I get the reasoning why this has happened. We grew up with parent that were often racist or homophobic and placed those ideas in to our little, forming personalities.
Some of us had to come to terms with having those ideas ourselves. We took on these ideas ourselves, could not handle that we may possibly be intolerant of others, and over-comepensated for our guilt by being over-tolerant.
