In 2014, a political party called the "New Founding Fathers of America" are voted into office following an economic collapse and pass a law sanctioning the "Purge", an annual event wherein all crime (including murder) is legal, and emergency services are unavailable for 12 hours. By 2022, the United States is said to have become virtually crime-free, with legal unemployment rates having dropped to 1%.
Businessman James Sandin returns to his home in an affluent Los Angeles gated community to wait out the Purge with his wife, Mary, and their children, Zoey and Charlie. The family is assured the security system manufactured by James' company will keep them safe while Zoey meets her boyfriend, Henry. As the year's Purge begins, James enables the security system, and the family disperses to go about their everyday routines. Zoey returns to her room and finds Henry, who had snuck in before the security system was engaged, planning on confronting her father about their relationship. Meanwhile, Charlie watches the security monitors and sees a wounded man calling for help. He temporarily disables the system to allow the man inside, but James races to re-engage the system and holds the man at gunpoint. Henry comes downstairs, points a pistol at James, and opens fire, but James returns fire and mortally wounds Henry. During the chaos, the stranger disappears.

Me and my wife saw an early showing of this at the theaters. My wife whispered to me, “what would you do? Help the black guy, or force him outside?” I looked at her and said, “what are you talking about? I wouldn’t even be home. I’d be out purging”. She hit my arm and told me to shut up. 🤣
Best insane horror franchise of all time; they nailed it w The Purge films. They showed actual footage of crime and murders by years which is all true; however the fifth Purge film shows the exact year but different. All 5 Purge films are crazy but awesome

The hunger games was "inspired" by the Japanese movie "2000's Battle Royal." They denied it at first too.
Truly don't know how they had the balls to deny it when it was THAT obvious. Even down to the "two "lovers" survive" ending. Then the second part being "we're going back into it but let's use this opportunity to take down the system" in both stories. It was so so obvious from a fan's point of view.

@AungMyat-d9k it WAS "inspired" by the Japanese movie "Battle Royale" that came out in 2000. Kids who are picked randomly and sent on an island to fight to the death with only one survivor allowed. Can get weapons at the beginning if they're lucky. Trackers in the kids. Forbidden zones popping up to force the kids to stay close to each other. Psycho kid who is trained at killing others. Even the exact same "supposed to be only one survivor but the two lovers survive" ending. Similar sequel too, where the goal is to kill the previous Battle Royale winners who are coming together to revolt and bring down the system. Only differences really is that in Battle Royale, the kids knew each other before the game and that Battle Royale was supposed to take place in a very near future while Hunger Games is supposed to take place in a distant future. The reason given for the Battle Royale games being put in place are already met as of today. Hunger Games blatantly copied Battle Royale then added to it. As soon as I saw the Hunger Games movie, that was the first thought that came to mind. It's the exact same but like 74 years into the games instead of a couple years into the games like Battle Royale was. Battle Royale could have literally been the 5th Hunger Games. Either you have not actually seen Battle Royale, or you are in denial. Especially since the author admitted to it.
Speaking of “safe rooms” the movie “Panic Room” with Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart would be a great movie for you guys to react too.
I find it cool that they showed the city I was born in Rochester NY during the beginning.

Definitely watch the other Purge movies. Also, check out the movies Unfriended(2014), You’re Next(2011), Hush(2016), Ready or Not(2019), Insidious(2010), The Strangers(2008), The Strangers: Prey at Night(2018), and Insidious: Chapter 2(2013).

What Hunger Games was based on wasn't the Purge, but Battle Royale! It WAS a Japanese movie though. Basically a random class of highschoolers sent to an island with off-limits zones, and given random weapons. It was a lot more brutal than Hunger Games in my opinion. And also much scarier because Hunger Games is clearly set in a somewhat distant future, while Battle Royale could take place RIGHT NOW. The conditions given as a reason to start the Battle Royale "program" at the beginning of the movie are already met, if I'm not mistaken. They weren't when the movie came ou in 2001, but now they are. It was also more interesting to see how this could play out among actual real-life friends, instead of unknown other tributes like in the Hunger Games. The kills felt more brutal because those kids knew each other and were actually friends.

The original version of The Hunger games was called.. Battle Royal.. from Japan. It was a very controversial film for its time.. especially now!! It would probably be banned nowadays because of the nature of how violent it was and is!! Still though it is considered a very good film. Definitely thought provoking and disturbing... so please be warned!!!! ⚠️😔💔🇯🇵
I don't think it'd be banned because it's not more visually violent than a movie like Saw, for example. But it might be forbidden to minors. I know it was R15+ when it came out in Japan, but I saw another website say it's R rated, so 17 and up. So yeah, probably a hig age restriction, but I don't think it'd be banned if it came out now.
I'm so glad someone caught that - I thought I was in an alternate universe because I was like "Um, Battle Royale was the book that inspired The Hunger Games"

I've never been interested in these movies. I'm into sci fi/fantasy. People hurting people was never a go to watch for me but you two are so fun to watch I'll give it a try.

Saw this in theaters what a great concept! But I think the sequel “Anarchy”is my favorite.

This movie always exposes people. Jane trust the rich yt people that are prepared to kill an innocent person vs the blk homeless vet that fought for his country. One will fight with you and the other would obviously kill you.. 😆 smh. I want to say unbelievable but that would be untrue.
FYI, in this situation, she would kill anyone that came onto the property. If you watched all our stuff, you'd know she was attacked before and now would take out any threat.
She didn't trust anyone unknown coming inside the home, which is fair and understandable. Especially since the guy runs off as soon as he's let in, before talking with anyone. Every reactor I've seen react to this movie had the same reaction: can we really trust this guy? Jane also changed her mind pretty quickly once it was shown that the guy was a vet who got unlucky, and she said that the main characters needed to protect the guy. Quite a few reactors didn't trust the black guy that early. So I'm not sure what there is to "expose". That a mom puts her children's safety first but is then willing to help others when she's sure they're not a threat to her family? Sounds like a pretty okay person to me. As a parent, your children's safety will always be first. She also didn't "trust" the white people who wanted to kill the guy, she clearly didn't like them either and even called them "psychotic". I'm not sure what you're on about. Like, I know you're trying to make this a race thing but JV himself says at 23:30 that the guy just wants to save his family and that it's a difficult choice. Literally everyone watching this movie thought the same.
