One of the more unique cruises we have done are the repositioning ones in April and November between the Mediterranean and Caribbean. It is *obviously* a lot of sea days, so it is usually a very relaxing cruise. We have done 4 of them, 3 to the Caribbean and 1 to the Mediterranean. We have also done a trans-Pacific repositioning in October that was both an Alaskan and Japan cruise into one. I think that was one of my favourite ones.
The Holland America repositioning cruises are top notch. Entertainment and food are just as good; fewer port stops, but onboard life is maybe better. We’ve done only trans Atlantic, but Seattle to Tokyo is on my radar.
The giant party ships are so full of activities that it almost makes more sense to have more sea days. I'm not sure they transit across the oceans as much though
We have done exactly what you did plus one more transatlantic. We have also done Hong Kong to Singapore and Dubai to Rome which were spectacular. With that said, if you do do a transatlantic consider one that goes South and ports in the Canaries, Madiera and Morocco and then across. We got lucky and did one on HAL and it was great. Plus when you take a Southern route across the Atlantic the weather is nicer and a lot warmer. So you can spend a lot more time on deck and at the pool. Few people know this or think about it.
You don't speak often about west coast USA cruises. Mexican Riviera in Dec. We have a cruise booked to do the Sea of Cortez in November. Hawaii is popular. We have a cruise booked to do a California Coastal in October. Perfect time of year for it.
I as a Canadian would personally recommend swapping your October and September recommendations as the fall colours really don't tend to come out until early-mid October, particularly in recent years as climate change has led to longer summers. The Mediterranean meanwhile still has good weather, pricing, and most notably choice in September. By the time October comes around most of the Mediterranean cruise options are either one-way trips or transatlantic repositioning routes, which while certainly nice are not necessarily for everyone. Otherwise, great list Gary!
I found that the changing leaves reay didn't start in eastern Canada or New England until early to mid October. Tbe years may have been warmer (approx 5 years ago) so I was disappointed with 1 trip that was in September (still around 30°C in Toronto!). The later trips were better as it eas quieter in Bar Harbor for example, and you could see fall cours coming through in the Cadillac National Park.
New England and the east coast of Canada are great in August to go whale watching. The large Northeast Atlantic whales migrate to Canada in the summer; they start to return south in late September. I have lived my entire life in the Northeast of the United States; Maine and the east coast of Canada typically have mild weather and plenty of sun in July and August.
We made an Iceland-Norway-England cruise on Norwegian cruise line at the end of June. We went to Iceland several days early and were not prepared for the weather. It was cold and we were dealing with sleet for most of the time. We packed for a chill but not the weather that was there. Once we boarded the ship the weather cleared up though and we had a good time especially when we got over to the other side of the Atlantic.
I’m pretty happy I did Italy in October and booked Alaska for next year end of may (my birthday cruise lol) completely by accident. You didn’t mention the Mexican riviera but I live on the west coast now and have taken a couple cruises. Let me say that March is probably the best month for that. The weather is good and the whales are migrating to Alaska which sounds bad but thAt combined with the babies are much bigger means that they are very active. As a native new englander that has been on dozens and dozens of whale watching cruises let me say that is by far the best I’ve ever seen all thanks to the energetic babies and their antics.
I enjoyed your suggestions. I might add two thoughts. 1. March/April, do a Transatlantic from the Carib to the Med, then stay another week on the ship for it's first Med cruise. Probably get a nice back to back discount on at least the second cruise. 2. Likewise in Oct/Nov to a Transatlantic back to the Carib, with a follow on cruise in the Carib. David
Another great video, but I'm disappointed that you didn't mention United States river cruises--the Mississippi, the Pacific northwest, the Ohio and Tennessee rivers. Cruising these rivers (May through October especially) is a relaxing, educational treat!
I have just logged in every iota of information from this video, into my trip planing tool on Trello. I am a long time traveler, with just a recent interest in cruising. I am binge watching your videos! Thank you, Gary, for all the time and effort you spend in sharing your experience and knowledge 🙏🏻. So appreciated 💕
I noticed nothing was mentioned about northern africa/middle east. Those places are nice in the fall going into the winter, especially on the Persian Gulf or through the Suez Canal.
@@liddy1171 January was fabulous. Perfect 70 - 75 degrees every day. Only last day at sea had a bit of rain/gray skies. I go in January because A) my anniversary but also, B) Nov/Dec aren't that cold where I am so January is a better "escape".
Some great ideas, especially regarding weather, which can make or break a trip. I've got a 16 day Princess trip in Norway next June, with 6-21 being in the far north at Longyearbean. I'm looking forward to several days without a sunset. - Iceland and New Zealand are still on my list.
June or July are ideal to do the Kimberley region of Australia on Silversea or Ponant. Very warm, zero chance of cloud let alone rain. Broome to Darwin or reverse.
I have no interest in cruising, I have never been on one nor do I ever intend to go on one. But yet, I watch loads of these videos. Gary, I think it's because of you! You seem like such a genuinely nice person and you're very interesting. Thanks
Thanks for watching! Great to hear you find them interesting even though (currently??) cruising is not in your plans. Maybe all this video watching will tempt you 😀😀
I love you and your channel so much! Truly excellent advice and information. I would like to know when is the best time to take the British isles tour ( decent weather and less tourists) ?
I think you are spot on . We have done Alaska in May, the Mediterranean in October and the Caribbean in February. All totally lovely and recommended. Here in Sweden the schools have a holiday in February which meant that it was perfect to bring ouo granddaughter to the Caribbean cruise.
I live in the Australian Barrier reef region in Queensland and it is still quite warm here up until May. Even after that the Barrier Reef region is still nice and sunny weather just a bit cooler at night. Winter after May is a popular time here especially for diving because the conditions are better for it, clearer water and no cyclones, great for the daintree jungle tours, scenic helicopter rides and hiking, along with all of the other activities. And our international borders are now re-opened to visitors after being closed due to Covid19.
Thanks for watching. It is great to hear you are finding it so helpful. If there are topics you feel I am missing that would help other travellers like you let me know ‘
We did the Pacific cruise in the winter - July and it was hot but not too hot. New Zealand u need the summer as New Zealand gets cold. A Japan cruise sounds awesome!!! Bears can get scary!!! Never thought of cruising to the fresh Polynesian islands or Iceland or Canada. I’ve been to all these places but not cruised there!!!
My only cruise so far was a Western Med cruise on MSC, in the second half of May. Temperatures were great, and the ports weren't crazy busy. Really enjoyed it! We started off with a couple weeks on Malta - first half of May was a great time to visit Malta, provided you don't want to spend a lot of time on the beaches. Noodling around looking at all the historical sights was fun, weather was comfortable, and not yet high tourist season so not too busy yet. Fingers crossed to maybe cruise again in 2022!
Great Job Gary 👍 having cruised extensively for over 25 years, we often share such things with Fellow passengers onboard. Interesting to hear everyones viewpoint. 😁 This will help many people for sure. UK June to September is our favorite timeframe to cruise this area. We agree with your viewpoint on here 👍😁😁
Just curious, have you ever taken a cruise to the Hawaiian Islands from the USA West Coast?? or even the 7 Day Cruise around the islands via NCL Pride Of America?? If you have, did you enjoy the cruise??
Yes, we took the Golden Princess from Los Angeles to the islands in 2008. Best vacation of my life. Lots of sea days to relax, and time to visit four Hawaiian ports with interesting excursions.
We really enjoyed the NCL itinerary--felt like we saw a lot of the islands that way. The ship doesn't have a lot of the "new" stuff. but that was OK with us. We prefer another cruise line, but chose Pride of America for the most Hawaii we could find and were very pleased.
Great suggestions. I did manage to take 2 cruises in Australia and New Zealand this March/April based on your advice; it was the perfect time. Next is Med in August (not ideal), then ABC Islands in December, East-West Panama crossing in February 2025, and a transatlantic in May 2025. Thank you for the advice. I wanted to try Japan around that time, but I’m thinking I will save that for a transpacific from Seattle in October 2025. Awesome video.
I’m so glad to have found this video - got to 5 minutes in and have decided I’m going to come back to watch fully this weekend - looking forward to it!

Great video. Agree with you that October is great for Meditteranean as we just completed Agean seas with Celebrity Silhouette. We are planning Adriatic seas for 2025 and Norwegian Viva runs from 7 November 2025 to 18 November from Venice to Rome through Croatia, Malta, Sicily. We are fine with cold weather but only concern regarding stormy seas. Are the Adriaric seas stormy during November as prone to motion sickness. Thanks
Very good information. My wife and I like to go to New England/Canada since that is when our anniversary is. It is still fairly warm up there and the fall colors are better than in September. Of course, every now and then it can get chilly. But, bad weather could occur at any time.
Actually, In February during President's week, students in New York and certain other Northeastern states are off. So, you may want to avoid that week if you don't have school aged kids.
Noticed that MEXIXO was not mentioned. I’m looking at a 10 day NCL Mexican Riviera cruise in early December- thoughts/advise? Can also go November OR January. Thxs for any info!

Has anyone done a repositioning cruise? I have heard they are fun if you like the ship your sailing on or line. Just wondering if there are cruise lines or ships to avoid?
Repositioning cruises are great! We did a back to back on the Nieuw Statendam in 2019, Eastern Med to and from Rome, then headed west to the Azores, then home to the US. Sea days are a wonderful way to relax and meet new people. The wife and I played cards, went to talks and shows and just completely relaxed. The low cost of a repositioning cruise helps with the budget so you can afford a balcony and the ocean views. We are taking one home from the UK this fall after touring Scotland for 2 weeks. No jet lag that way. Heartily recommend one.
This video is so helpful, thank you! Question, is the second half of October still good for an Athens/Greek Isles cruise? I watched a couple of videos where it is stated that many of the shops and restaurants close down. Please advise and thank you!
Hiiii… i would really appreciate some help please.. i would just like to know if May is a good time to do a Western Mediterranean Cruise?? Weather wise as well?? Also - we really enjoy your videos they are so informative.. thank you from 🇿🇦
Hi there. My girlfriend and me are looking for a nice cruise in january, however, we’re not entirely interested in south america. Which cruise would you suggest otherwise? And which ship? We’re completely nee to cruises. Thanks!
@Tips For Travellers I was wondering if you had plans on reviewing Atlas Ocean Voyages in the future. They seem to be a new company, and reviews for them are few and far between at this time.
Remember, the Aussies go to school year round. Their “school holidays” are different. Watch out for Jan, April, July, August, late December and weeks long school breaks in between. ✌️
Yes! Although we have no school holidays in August but June/July and September/October. As an Aussie I had to laugh when he spoke about Tahiti being far away and exotic and if you wanted a less expensive experience closer to home then choose the Mediterranean. It is definitely the opposite for us.

Going to the Carribean in January. Is the weather OK then?
Hi there. My girlfriend and me are looking for a nice cruise in january, however, we’re not entirely interested in south america. Which cruise would you suggest otherwise? And which ship? We’re completely nee to cruises. Thanks!
This is Gold. Thank you!!
I really appreciate all of your advice and information. I am recently retired and hoping to cruise once a year..
@Tips For Travellers
I was wondering if you had plans on reviewing Atlas Ocean Voyages in the future. They seem to be a new company, and reviews for them are few and far between at this time.
No plans (yet!)
What time of year would you recommend for a Northern Europe cruise?
Great video!👍 Really useful. Thanks! 😀
Great information thank you very much 🙏🌼
