One of my all time favorite persons. I love him and his personality and his wonderful talent. He is a legend and we are blessed to see his performances over the years. I salute him. God bless Mr. Dick Van Dyke
Sometimes is not about whether you got the accent right and wrong is the attitude behind it.... I love his cockney accent in Mary Poppins and I'm a Londoner..
Same. I am from the UK as well, midlands. I don't care. It was the passion and the fun that always got my wrapped up in the magic. I am still not taken out of it when I watch him because, as you said, its the attitude behind it and he got that spot on for his charcter.
Dick Van Dyke is a marvelous, charismatic comedian and actor. I'm watching the dvd's at present and am enjoying them all. The styles on his show were just beautiful, so was Mary Tyler Moore.
So cool to see him. My father is such a huge fan of this guy too. Him, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman are three of the funniest TV personalities from that era. Way way before my time, but my father made sure i knew who they were growing up.
I so admire these men and women from these generations prior to the Baby Boomers, the Silent Generation and G.I. Generation especially; composed of individuals like Dick Van Dyke, Walter Elias Disney, Ronald Reagan, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Clint Eastwood, my grandparents, and my father. If you've ever been close to someone belonging to a generation prior to the Baby Boomers (especially someone born before 1940) you are aware of how different, special, and modest they are compared to all those that come after them.
I Love me some Dick Van Dyke. Falling in love all over again. Mary Poppins, The Dick Van Dyke show, Diagnosis Murder (On Hallmark Channel) Love him, Love him.
Re his Mary Poppins accent, it never bothered me since, just like Mary, Bert is a mysterious character with something magical to him. No way he's a regular London chimney sweep. So I figured any Cockney accent or similar he had could be a put on anyway.
About 15 years ago he got in line behind me at airport security and we chatted a bit. It was weird looking around seeing the random people recognizing him.
I've watched several times where British people react to bad accent attempts. The thing I love is they all agree his accent was terrible; and they still love him, his performance, and the movie. That's how incredible a talent he is! ;-)
That laughter and that voice sounds indifferent from what I used to see him in Chitty-chitty bang-bang in my kid ages.. Somewhat relaxes me just by listening to it.
He went properly into obscurity (no ridiculous scandals) and is still alive and enjoying his money. It's a nice and welcomed visit for today's audiences from a TV legend.
His appalling cockney accent is what endears us to him, and it makes us love Chitty Chitty bang bang all the more because He does not even try to do an accent.
And speaking of saved... in 2010 he fell asleep on a surfboard and woke up away from land-sight & porpoises bumped him to safety (really.. look it up!) and just last week he was helped from his burning jaguar on the freeway, unhurt. The guy has magic onscreen & off!
Did anyone notice in those old comedies that the actors who did pratfalls always wore hats as an excuse to grab their heads when they did the stunt? I think it was about establishing both leverage and momentum in the same motion.
Can be quite annoying when Americans refer to the London accent as the "British accent". Considering Britain consists of 4 different countries and about 100 different regions which all have completely different accents..
It's still a British accent, we just don't bother to specify which part of Britain. You'd be amazed to learn how many different accents you'd find in America... The "southern" accent you always hear when someone wants to make fun of southerners is actually just one of the many types of accents found the south. Lousiana, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, etc... all within hours of each other, all with their own distinct accents categorized under "Southern". So it's the same sort of thing.
It's still a British accent, just like the way Conan speaks here is an American accent, despite the fact that not all Americans talk that way. Most Americans are aware that not everyone in the UK or even in England speaks like a BBC announcer, but I readily concede that most Americans who haven't traveled there really underestimate just how much linguistic diversity can be packed into such a tiny group of islands. I didn't believe it myself until I first went to England, and saw for myself that there are places where literally every little village will have their own accent, and it can sound almost like a different language compared to how they speak in a town twenty miles away.
A Brit here, the accent was never a big deal until the Americans themselves thought/said it was. .and anyway ~hey...its for kids,.. for fun. Also, only in America....the host talks more than the guest, instead of getting the guest to talk.
Had to do a lot of research to find that one out, and now I have no desire since I can't see flying nanny's and chimney sweeps with sweet choreography.
His voice never wavers, and still retains such a beautifully deep and resonating tone. Absolutely amazing.
Absolutly. Just saw AGT and even at 100, beautiful person, clear beautiful voice
@@maxxandubar503He's not there yet. He's 2 years away. He has drank the immortal fountain of youth
@@matthewgumball4568 He's about to reach 99
His speaking voice is so vintage and low, and when he sings he floats around in both high and low ranges effortlessly... Love this guy!
Yes and his voice at this age is still almost the same as it was when he was young...
"So, the British get angry with your accent". ...
We really don't. We freegin' love this guy.
Yes we do!
Terrible accent. Disney should have had a real Cockney person train him
.
Conan's British accent on the other hand...not so much
You can't fool us, Mr. Kim, we know you're North Korean
@@victoriaodegaard1 You are most surely correct. If you look at my red rocket, you'll know I'm very much Asian.
You can tell when Conan is actually really interested in interviewing someone.
Yes. He acts like a buffoon.
Yes, 100%!!!! He perks right up.
Yes. He doesn't let them speak.
Yes, his chair falls backwards while he's sitting in it..
Sometimes too much - STOP RAMBLING AND CUTTING THE GUEST OFF.
wow he's aged so well one of my biggest inspirations!
That's what I was about to say. It doesn't look like he is 86 years old, he seems way more young.
susan price hi,, funny conan wanted him to admit he drank a lot funny no one gets else that
@@ericpa06 especially now at 96 he's still kickin'

what an awesome man- he looks great and still has all his charm.
This man has brought so much happiness in to my life it's unbelievable.
have always LOVED Dick Van Dyke. so happy to see this interview. I wanna give him a hug.
Even though he's so old his personality still seems very youthful.

What a loveable guy. I was amazed to see him play a bad guy in a Columbo movie, pretty cool!
He was also good as an evil museum guard haha
Which one!?

Paul Galesko. One of my favorite Columbo villains.
Over 90 and still the best actor in the business. Real talent, real charm, and an honorable and kind person.
I love how we're still talking about "Marry Poppins". :)
hope he makes it to 100
I hope so too ❤

true. the classics never aged for me.
Omg he's so humble to be who is 👍🏾
*Happy 90th Birthday Dick*
Happy 😂🎉 97th Birthday Bert
As a brit, I loved Van Dykes accent in Mary Poppins, mainly because I'm from the North of England and to me it was like poking fun at Londoners. lol
Mid-90's and very active. Good for him.
He has to be in his late 20s, early 30s max... Still super quick-witted and funny. Whatever DvD does to stay young, I want to know his secret!!!
I've admired this man since I was a little boy, good to see him still active and chipper :)
was dat?
He's a living legend 🙌 👏 ❤️
What a charming timeless act
His wit is still extremely sharp
He won am Emmy in an age of 98 uvblevible lots of health ❤
This guys secret is he’s been happy his whole life that’s why he’s lived so long
I would be nervous if I was talking to one of my heroes.
He's absolutelu stunning for his age and he's the coolest one !!
Mary Tyler Moore said it best, "He's beautiful".
The crazy thing is this was 10 years ago and he’s just as present and lively in 2023

Dick can finally legitimately play the "old Men" parts in Mary Poppins.
The character he played in my childhood is Caractacus Potts (sorry for misspelling) in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
His appalling cockney accent is what endears us to him, and it makes us love Chitty Chitty bang bang all the more because He does not even try to do an accent.
I remember him from Diagnosis Murder, My parents and I watched it every Thursday night when it was still on CBS.
What a gem he is. I'm always in awe.

Mary Poppins was the first thing I saw him in. I spent way too much of my life thinking he was legit British
Yes, as a child I thought he was an all round entertainer, never dreamed he had never danced before Mary Poppins!
11 years. that's a long run for a talk show. nice job, conan.
He’s not afraid to call out Chevy Chase, he’s my kind of guy.
He has a new book about about how to live a long life
