Charles Dutoit's recording with the orchestre national de France is great too (maybe even better than this one). And of course Munch, but the sound recording is not as good os this one.

Despues de la tempestad viene la calma, que maravilla de musica, es un coloquio con los que la escuchan, aunque en la vida es todo relativo , aqui con esta musica es todo lo contrario en esta sinfonia nº 4 en la menor. Gracias

The 3rd and 4th symphonies of Roussel are masterpieces of the French symphonic music written between WW1 and WW2. The 4th Symphony is masterly rendered here. It is a very strong and energic music, with some contrasting moments. Unlike the 3° symphony, the tone is prepared here by a slow introduction. Roussel, Ravel and Honegger are for sure the best symphonists of this period. France did not follow the atonal line of Schoenberg, so we don't have music from that school. Generalized serialism will arrive just after WW2 with Pierre Boulez.

... and let's thank God for it that at least France was spared - for a while - that sorrowful alley.

I don't fully agree with you, dear friend. I think that it was the genuis of Franch composres to investigate new tonal paths. But in my opinion, Schoenberg, Berg and Webern followed a logic or their own, and they created highly valuable masterpieces, the most known of which is the violin Concerto of Alban Berg.. Erwartung by Schoenberg is also a haunting score.

The Harmonielehre of Schoenberg is at treatise of tonal music as you can find many others. French composers, as everybody, learned harmony with teachers and treatises. I don't agree with you about Webern. I love this musician, every piece he wrote is crystal clear and there is no break in his style when he switched from 'free' atonalism to serial dodecaphonic technique !!!

Ravel never wrote a symphony! Your musical knowledge is quite fine apart from that!

Daphnis et Chloé was labelled "symphonie chorégraphique" very early on. You can read here the quote from Ravel's autobiographical sketch, where he himself presents the piece as a choreographic symphony.

The best Roussel, in my opinion, is Bachus (s?) and Ariadne. The ballet suite.

This composer sounds kind of "hermetic" to me, it's not easy to like him.
