- Premature infants require help to breath, oxygenate and make gas exchange after birth. The successful use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in infants with respiratory distress syndrome was first reported in 1971. Over the next decades, there have been large sites differences on the type of CPAP used, application in the delivery room, proper interfaces, indications for initiation, definitions of failure, routine daily care, and weaning strategies. All this may partially explain why rates of intubation, death and severe lung disease remain a challenge, especially in infants born with a birth weight of less than 1250 g.
In this presentation, Dr. Sant’Anna will review the literature on non-invasive respiratory support in very preterm infants, and the use of a comprehensive protocol for the initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation of bubble CPAP in the McGill University Health Centre. The objective is to demonstrate the association between this initiative and clinical outcomes.
Dr. Guilherme Sant’Anna is a Neonatologist at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Montreal Children’s Hospital, Professor of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University, and a senior clinician scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre.
