Viv and Elon are intentionally confusing two different types of visa. The H1B is for professionals with a bachelors degree, which we _already have plenty of._ The visa for foreigners with exceptional/highly sought after knowledge and skill is the 01 visa. So why would they say, "We need the best of the best of the best of the best of the best of the best..!" ad infinitum, ad nauseum, but then request H1Bs for these supposed people? And it's really simple: what they both want is to bring over a slew of low-end tech degrees because (spoiler alert!) they're cheaper than paying an American do the job. Oh, and just how are we going to "win" anything by bringing in India's worst (a bachelors from an Indian university is NOT the same as one from a U.S. university)?!

He created sub-companies..put patents in, hyped the stock..raised a ton of money, sold a enough shares to be a billionaire...then the patented medication failed testing. Company folded. He had at best, 8 employees..including his mother. He never built a successful company. He pumped and dumped stock on a failed med. He has zero experience running any decent size org...much less being an efficiency expert.
The H1B system is not for the best and brightest, it's to fill gaps in the tech sector. The gaps appear when big-tech fire engineers as they hit middle-age and salaries become expensive...and replace them with low-wage foreign engineers they import and stack ten to an apartment.

And 80,000 in total is the H1B visa quota for all skilled immigrants i.e. doctors + nurses + software engineers + civil engineers + electrical engineers + nuclear engineers etc. etc.
Total immigrants legally allowed into the USA every year is around 1 million.

American corporations are pimping immigrant labor and paying them low wages. Years ago high school teenagers used to work fast food jobs after school so they would have some money for a high school ring, the year book, the prom, and more money than the allowance the typical parent would pay. Who remembers that? Now, fast food workers are immigrants with children who accepted the low wages only to strike for more, claiming it is not enough to live on. If you can not get free labor, the next best thing is cheap labor, and the best applicants are unskilled and uneducated immigrants. It is what it is.

They prefer Indians because H1-B visa holders are beholden to the firm and can be overworked long hours. Before burning out the H1B visa holder gets USA citizenship and leaves the sponsoring firm. The firm hires more H1-B visa holders from India to fill the vacancy and the cycle repeats. Good for Indians and Indian multinationals but not so good for Americans.

I worked in a medical device manufacturing company for 15 years. They saturated their allowance for H1-B visas every year, and only THEN did they approach the teams at the nearby university. American expertise isn't missing, it's the greed of major corporations that are now owned by foreign entities that drive the problems. When foreign companies drive manufacturing and tech jobs in the USA, they aren't concerned about too much dilution of American jobs by foreign workers.

What makes the education an immigrant receives more valuable than that of an American? Or is it rather that they would rather pay the former group less to save on labor costs?...
