Which of These 2024 RPGs Will Be The Biggest Trainwreck?

- There's a surprising number of mainstream AAA RPGs releasing in 2024 (alongside some great indies).
Unfortunately, it seems to be a quantity over quality situation. While there are likely going to be some great upcoming games such as Shadow of the Erdtree (Elden Ring DLC) & Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, we're also getting games like Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 & Dragon Age: The Veilguard which look absolutely middling at best. Avowed is probably somewhere in between the great and poor-quality games being released, but I'm also quite skeptical.
The question is, will some of these games be as disappointing as they appear or will one or even all of them surprise us? The battle for the worst RPG of 2024 begins...
Bloodlines will tank HARD
If Dragon Age was hard to follow Bloodlines is even worse, DA was way more mainstream than BL imho , epic fantasy vs very edgy dark fantasy
dragon age will flop as hard... First the gameplay looks mediocre and the story will be probably bad...... Sweet Baby Inc. has had their feminist (misandrist) hands "contributing" to the game.
Only one i have good deal of hope for is Avowed.
I've already withdrawn my pre order, I supported it for several years just to see the gameplay reveal and go nope

This. It is already a Frankenstein-Project with dev studios changed and rebooting almost everything (story, characters, playable clans, the protagonist concept & background). Then there is the weird decision to put a thinblood voice into our head again, which will explain everything we see (bc gamers can*t think for themselves or are capable to come to their own conclusions). Worked perfectly well for Forsaken. And after hearing the devs say, that the Masquerade means to assume a role as a character, while it is actually the most important rule of vampire society, it is pretty obvious that they don*t even understand what VtmB actually is.
My money's on Bloodlines 2 becoming the biggest flop. Outside of the graphics and combat it looks like a downgrade in every aspect overall compared to the first game from 20 years ago. Avowed may turn out to be decent, good even. But it's not going to be the BG3 of this year. I think the Veilguard will be mediocre at best. That's my prediction.
Well its way more niche than DA, so less room for manoeuvre .... and the original was very edgy , so if go woke, its even more noticeable

BioWare has a very small, very dedicated new fanbase that is willing to consume any DA or ME crumbs they're given but as you said, they need the normies and the old fans too and this game is not resonating with either of those groups. If they don't manage to show this game in a better light I doubt they'll do even decent money tbh. EA is not going to be pleased.
I was keeping an eye for Avowed but the more they show the less interested I am, the character progression and the combat seem very simplistic and the whole project seems a lot smaller than they previously marketed. It might still be a solid 8 but I'm skeptical.
Bloodlines is just going to be another disappointment for the fans waiting since the original and I don't see this game attracting any normie demographic either, if they don't get their fanbase that's it for that game.
I don't know why this companies think all they have to do to achieve success is to throw more money on the graphics department (and even failing on that front in some cases) while downgrading many (or most) other aspects of the game compared to previous entries and making it more shallow and generic. It's pretty sad.
Haven’t they worked on avowed for quite some time? It can’t be that small. Outer worlds style and size maybe. Agree with the graphics. They don’t matter that much. Deep RPG systems, player choice and emergent gameplay and multiple ways to solve quests are far more important.
Bioware in name only. The og Bioware is dead and gone, EA bought them and after that, there games have been over all meh.
My personal opinion? ALL OF THEM. But I think DRAGON AGE has the highest chance of NUKING, hard. If you don’t give what actual players want, you’re destined to flop.
Ironically dragon age: veilguard has inquisition as it's bare minimum. Bloodlines however isn't really showing vampires from wod it's the vampyr game slapped with a coat of wod vampires.
There’s plenty of people excited for that game. I don’t see it happening the way you say.
When it comes to RPGs, all I know is I’m only looking forward to is Kingdom Come Deliverance II and I think/hope it’s going to crush ever other game in the market.

Yep, KC:D2 is at the top of my list. I have some hopes for Avowed, based on the most recent gameplay reveal, not least because I really like the lore of Pillars of Eternity.
Dragon Age Veilguard is probably the sacrifice this year. Worst kind of development hell plus a team that doesn't seem to understand the series and the audience.
AC Shadows is likely to be a dud given Ubisoft's recent history and that it's made by the worst of the main teams. Not to mention the numerous issues just from the marketing.
Avowed will probably be the most difficult to gage before release, we don't know enough and likely will never know enough to really understand what they are trying to do and that will likely be the problem. They don't seem to have a focus.
Kingdom Come 2 will probably be great, maybe some performance and technical issues.
And Bloodlines 2... I think it'll die a silent death. Not much to say given it doesn't seem to be much of an RPG.
As a massive dragon age fan, I completely agree with you when it comes to that company. As a fan, I expect a good game and will not support this game if it flops. We didn't wait this long for them to deliver us a crap product. It baffles me that there are dragon age "fans" that will accept anything bioware throws at them. Bioware hasn't made anything good in years and I will NOT become a bioware apologist just because they gave us a new game. Bioware NEEDS this game to succeed or else there's a very good chance this studio might close.
Why do they make every rpg comming about action and a action rpg ? I now get the panic bug developers had last year when they saw BG3 success and everyone….ooohhhhhh…. They went for good story and succeeded… we don’t have that we went for action game
I loved the first Bloodlines, even if it was a buggy mess sometimes. You are right about Veilguard. If I do play it, it will be because it has the words Dragon Age on the title, and I want to see how they wrap up the story. Otherwise, this type of game would not have interested me.

There are some superb J-rpgs releases and for western rpg we still have Kingdom Come 2 at the very least. But generally there will be a mountain of slop this year when it comes to triple A gaming.
Awoved was always colorful. This is nonsense
DA will tank hard. It's a game made for no one: too dumbed down and strayed too far from what old time fans want and too bland and generic to attract a significative portion of the mainstream audience

And honestly, I am happy about it too. The more money they lose to this poitless pandering to 0.1% of the population, the more studios get shut down and others rise by talented people who lost their jobs to some DEI corporate extortionist. The real talent leaves, creates their own studio and we get an incredible game while the DEI garbage gets shut down. This is what has happened to the witcher team after their DEI announcement, same with the original talent thar worked on Mass Effect and so many others. So, it is a win-win for all. It will be sad to see Bioware go as I have loved all their games all throughout my childhood. But it is no longer Bioware. It is a husk of its former self. So I have to let it go 😢
From the new developers direct, Avowed looks alot better, surprisingly.
Veilguard looks to be inferior to Dragon Age Inquisition.
Grounded surprised everyone, same goes to Avowed. It gonna be great like Grounded.

@@grd1184 it's not like you have to play Redfall or Anthem, just look them up. They were pathetic attempts at making a game. At least Anthem had a fun traveling system. Kingdom come and the Mass effect trilogy, were innovative for their respective times.
Dragon Age Veilguard is basically a RESKIN of Mass Effect Andromeda (well: The combat system is! Hell, they dumbed it down even further! They got rid of cover-mechanics and gave us a spiderman or Batman Arkham style indicator when to dodge, block/parry etc. and they didn't give us profile-switching, so this time we truly are HARD-LOCKED to 3 abilities, which fucks every class, but especially the mages who as a class-fantasy are a swiss-army-knife character with spells for every situation - but not in DAV, nope! Here you are a one-trick-pony mage (unless you truly use only 1 healing ability, one damage ability and only one crowd control ability, which means you are a bad Jack of few (not all!) traits and master of nothing!))

Bloodlines fans have high expectations, the first game was perhaps one of most interesting RPGs made... edgy too, a dumbed down hipster game will fail
They promised too much. It probably wont meet expectations even if its solid. Kingdom hearts 3 is a good example of that

@CyrusIsnt but is that alot to deliver basic RPG elements, When smaller studios with smaller budgets do it. Larian rose to success with DoS2 which has deep skill system and branching story. Rpg game was their vision and passion. Bloodlines looks like dumbed down action game made to appeal to masses....
I think its more of vision, focus and talent issue than being asked too much or not having budget to do it.

Bloodlines 2 is dead for me without a character creation.
Even if the game turns to be Ok or mediocre, I would hate to play with that Phyre character and having only the illusion of choice.
Avowed has to be probably the most uninspired trailer I ever saw.
Compare it to the release trailer of skyrim. Even as it aged badly without mods, those notes still give people goosebumps.
Avowed just feels souless.

Avowed looks like the better of the 3....but IDK based on some of the newer imagery I don't feel it.....

VTMB2 i feel is doomed to fail! and so is DA4.....this'll be the end for DA.....not that I wanted that!

Yeah, Kingdom Come is the only one of these games i think might please it's audience. It's not my cup o'tea personally, but it might succeed with it's fans.

Outer Worlds is good....Hub worlds are the best. Deus ex, bloodlines the original etc.
Dragon Age Veilguard looks like it won’t have meaningful loot and will the most generic rpg ever. After playing fantastic rpgs with meaningful loot like Baldurs Gate 3 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, I fail to see how this game will impress me in anyway. Heck even God of War Ragnarok, a game that’s not an rpg seems to have more meaningful loot and rpg mechanics than Veilguard. It’s a pity. Oh well, back to BG3 I go

Does Veilguard even have an inventory system? Or do you just find health and mana potions and the occasional quest item like a key or other McGuffin?
Electronic Arts and Paradox are on my no-buy list because of problems such as DRM and the requirement to have an account with the company (EA), and a history of botched launches, DLC spam, and microtransactions (both companies). Even if, against all odds, Veilguard and Bloodlines 2 are good, I won't buy them because of this. I don't think I'll be missing much, as they aren't what I am looking for. Until the runaway success of Baldur's Gate 3, it seems like the big companies thought old school CRPGs were dead, and they all moved on to generic action games, because that was supposedly what sells. I think they are at least partially right; generic action games probably will sell, at least to some extent, but they aren't satisfying for the hard core RPG audience, which is larger than these companies realize. Unfortunately, with Avowed, Obsidian went down this same path, so I'm not particularly excited for it, and I'll wait and see before I consider buying it. I'm really tired of generic action RPG-lite games, and if I never play another one, it will be too soon. What I really want is a proper Pillars of Eternity 3, but that was not in the cards because that style of game was supposedly out of style. Hopefully, in the post-Baldur's Gate 3 era, Obsidian will be able to rethink this and get back to their roots - that is, unless Microsoft shuts them down because they can't produce a massive live service hit that will bring in loads of money.
POE3 is only getting made of Avowed does well enough. Otherwise they're done with that universe.
So Bloodlines 2 did away with the character creator. That sucks because originally they said you could create your character and pick his/her occupation Police, Fireman etc etc and pick a Vampire clan if I'm not mistaken. Sounded really interesting, too bad they did away with that, guess I'll pass on it then.
Love the points being made here. I absolutely love Pillars 2, and hoped the writing was going to be good at least in Avowed.

Avowed is dead to me, unfortunately. I loved Obsidian (Alpha Protocol NEEDS a sequel!) but I refuse to buy an Xbox. Also, it looks a little too much like "The Outer Worlds" which was a little mid to me; too cartoony with hideous character models (especially the women) and leaning too hard into the anti-capitalism/satire rather than a deep emotional investment.
Dragon Age: VG is also dead to me. I pre-ordered and played the original three. The character reveal was a slap to my face; cartoony Overwatch/Fortnight, ugly female companions, forced diversity with Asian and black elves, and WHATEVER the hell that Quanari warrior is. Add in once again going action over tactical and it is a hard pass. Besides, per the self described "Queerosexual Gendermancer" director, the game is "inherently queer" so not meant to be played by 95% of the audience. Given how many OG's have left, this isn't Bioware anymore.
Bloodlines 2 has lost my interest. It needed to be a deep RPG with tons of dialogue options and customization. By going with a spoken protagonist (which I do like, I just wish that we could get that WITH the classic dialogue system) who seems to be fixed kills quite a bit of what made the original so enjoyable. It might be decent but will not live up to the original (for all of its flaws). It has gone through too many hands and too many iterations.

Vampire Bloodlines 2 and Dragon Age share a number of similarities:
- iconic classics RPGs (Bloodlines 1 and DA: Origins) which had strong, dark themes that were both funny and well-written;
-These licenses are now pre-empted by a handful of activists and fans who hope to unscrupulously push their queer agendas into future games, and don't really care about the legacy of these licenses.
-The sequels of these famous RPGs become "action RPGs" with correct but soulless graphics, simplified generic combat, voice acting, and dialogue wheels which give a vaguely RPG aspect but which do not change anything in the story Game ;
-The Diversity Equity and Inclusion specifications are omnipresent and supported by the minority of activists who become the biggest defenders of the questionable choices of these studios;
To be fair Bloodlines 1 was also an action RPG. The combat, however, wasn't the main focus or why people liked the game. Partly due to how clunky and imbalanced it was.

Out of all these I'm mostly impressed with Avowed. It looks like a real fun rpg game with very gorgeous, stunning and eye-catching art style. Good it's not a large overwhelming empty open world rpgs like all other major games and thanks to developer for making Avowed into multiple large open zones with different environments, biomes and vegetations. This will make this game unique and standout from so called large open world realistic dark fantasy rpgs.
Buggy or not! New Vegas is the best (FPS-Fallout!), 3, 4 and especialyl 76 don't hold a candle to it! It was ambitious, it was well writen etc. - all the things BADthesda can't do, despite having years more time and 10+ times the budget and people working on it (so a lot more available man-hours, too!)
Inquisition seemed like they'd made an attempt to go back to an rpg. My only complaint was combat became a waste of time like a Diablo clone. Spam the different coloured lasers as the cooldowns finish
Fromsoftware? I would not call their crappy "You need to not have a life to succeed at playing our games!" RPGs! Witcher 3 is more of an RPG (despite the fixed character) than a Souls-Like!

Considering how good pillars of enternity 1 and 2 were to play, I would be gutted if avowed wasn't to the same standard with its story and characters etc.
Now the four active skills they give us in Bloodlines 2 doesn't seem THAT bad after DA gameplay reveal.

Inquisition is an exceptionally good game, and one of the most expansive and content rich western RPGs ever made, easily going blow for blow with BG3 and ever surpassing it in quite a few directions. You consider it mediocrity because you allowed your opinion to be formed by internet echo chambers. The Veilguard on the other hand looks to be abysmall dogshit
Very expansive and rich content. Like collecting shards all over the map or closing rifts or killing dragons or collecting meat for hungry soldiers. Inquisition has nothing,all side quests were shit(hell DA2 reusing assets and all had better side quests)at least the story for Inquisition was decent and trasspaser DLC was bad the ending scene was just the good part.

I think DA:I was fine, maybe a bit too big and bloated for it's own good. A good game just not worth playing more than once if time is scarce for you
i'm not protecting bioware, i didn't buy inquisition because of woke things in it but i wonder what is the difference between inquisition and veilguard? the only difference i see the graphics and artstyle tbh.

I think Bloodlines will hit the hardest, because so far all the games have been really good. Dragon Age has only had one good game. DAO. After that it has been subpar to medicore.
Have to 100% disagree on Veilguard. It seems to be a very vocal minority making it seem as though the game has much more negative sentiment than it actually does.
As far as the gameplay looking bad, maybe if you only prefer rigid turned based combat. To me this looks like the best DA combat out of any of their previous titles which have been mostly pretty bad so far. It looks like we’ll get some solid choice and consequence so as long as the writing it good, it will likely be received very well and sell very well.
They’ve been clear that it’ll be more linear and certain people will dislike that, but besides that it has a lot of potential to be GOTY for 2024.
Yeah, especially with the game director. Ideologically very aligned with the journalist class and politics do play a significant role with GOTY as well.
They take the worst story of the lore - dreadwolf and the worst char ever made -Solas and you hope for "good writing" ? You can not be serious. Just say you like the looks of companions. OMG. As for GOTY its most likely Palworld.
@@Vera-yu9ehdoubtful that an unfinished Pokémon ripoff that can’t run for more than 5 minutes on Xbox without crashing will be considered for anything. It was forgotten about within a couple weeks after release. They might eventually do something with it, but right now it’s hot garbage

Some of the most embarrassing failures. Not a good look. Avowed has a good chance to be decent, if not great. But it's not gonna be on par with BG3, though.
The basement dwelling incels all over UA-cam and Reddit aren’t a great representation of the gaming market. Both will likely do well both critically and financially.

@@maesterdrew8606 That sounds like major cope from you and @Deathcoremaniac, especially for DA which has more red flags than a minefield. It is easy to do well critically, just appease the journo's and their ch3ckboxes. Doing well financially is much harder, and Bioware always struggles with due to their lack of creative direction. The game looks like a generic, bland, safe, action-tourist mobile game and the creative director is a "qu33rmancer". Lets keep it real, the game will likely flop.

If you're an average girl, that's understandable. They have no clue what functionality or durability is, so they choose things based off visuals alone.
