We lost our gennaker on the Indian Ocean - Crossing to South Africa 2 - Sailing Greatcircle (ep.321)

- Well it is kind of interesting to be pushed to the max to choose an optimal weather window and routing when crossing an ocean. This time it's only 1400 miles, but still a significant amount of water to cross. Changing forecasts and approaching weather systems add to the pressure but also to the reward when you manage to arrive in one piece. That we didn't do completely.

Wow, what an adventure you had in the Indian Ocean! Losing your gennaker must have been quite a challenge, but I have no doubt that you'll always find a solution, just like you always do. Your channel is truly fantastic and I appreciate the real sailing content you provide. It's great to see your determination and problem-solving skills in action. Stay safe and keep enjoying your amazing journey! Sending you warm greetings from Austria. Can't wait to see what's next!
Hi from East Tennessee USA! Well I spent the last few days binge watching your videos, looks like I’m caught up unless I decide to watch them all again, 😊wow I really enjoyed it and I might add your storytelling skills are amazing, feels like I’m along for the ride without doing any work 😂,
Did you really watched ALL of them? Respect….
Where did you start?
Happy you made it. Pfiew, you’ve concurred the tricky sea! This episode was spannend🫣So lovely to see the harbor. Set many footsteps in that area. Hope you have a great time❤
You guys usually find a way to solve these problems just a fantastic channel.
Star Link, what a great Thing to have on a boat, only 8 Min. after you posted the Video, I am able to watch it 10000 km away.
I hope you new sail(s) arrive soon. And new furlers should be added. As much as you guys use the different sails and furlers, its always good to repair or replace them when possible.
Yes that’s why we brought a spare furler in the first place. I guess redundancy is key on a world tour
Nice episode. Pity you guys didn’t not get up to Madagascar, Seychelles, Mayotte, Kenya, Zanzibar/ Tanzania and Mozambique. Some of the most beautiful parts of Africa. We spent a year sailing that region in 2020 before heading to Richards Bay then PE and then Cape Town for the end of 2021. 22 we left Cape Town and crossed the Atlantic to Brazil then the Caribbean where we sold our cat after buying a new to us Cat in Thailand. We have been sailing between Thailand, Malaysia and Sumatra for the past year and will head to Borneo and then Raja Ampat this year.
I know you guys are already in Cape Town and hope you had a great passage down. We had our fastest 12 hours ever going through the Transkei coast with only an Asymmetrical spinnaker doing 191nm in 12 hours on a 40 ft Leopard. We were surfing waves at 18 knots which for a 40 ft is exceptionally good.
Yes choices choices. Being in a rally has advantages and disadvantages but we’re pretty happy with our pace compared to other rallies.
beautiful videos and good music. I recommend listening to Paul Hardcastel
Well done, sitting in cold Winter in Austria I Like your Channel, stay save, Arno
We’re looking forward to be in the snow again next year and cool down a bit 😎
Good timing , Can be a bad bit of water along there
Hi guys, excellent videos once again, much enjoyed, thank you 👍😊❤️
Fascinating episode!
Lovely, glad to see you got there safely.
Indian 🌊 ocean is tricky
A real sailing video. Thanks so much
Like most of them or?
Well done. In spite of loosing the genn you were able to make enough speed to use that rather narrow weatherwindow. 👍👍. You better check all your gear twice for the next leg. 😘
Great journey. Congrats.
Oh cool, that's my parents' yacht at 21:55 😄😄
Beautiful boat! It’s based here in Richard’s Bay or?
Thank you, my dad has been working on it himself.
They are based in RB for the time being, but they'll be heading off around the world sometime next year (so soon!)
Wonderful ocean journey👍😃
👍
Always looking at the top of the mast to see your colours ❤
Where are you now then?

Good job. Welcome to Momma Africa. Look forward to see you maybe up in Luderitz, Namibia before leaving Momma Africa again.
I’ll have a look at the map but we’re certainly coming to Namibia
Working hard for that passage.
😀👍👍👍❤❤
That IS one way to clean your Gennaker I guess . Better luck for the rest of your journey. Be safe.+
Hi guys, like always enjoyed the video)
Question - your starlink is together with the solar panels. It should be problems with the shadow - or not?
It might have some influence indeed, but we haven’t seen the whole davits group fall to zero yet. Choices choices…
Welkom in Suid Afrika. Ek wens julle 'n aangename verblyf toe in ons land
Baia dankie
Love your channel. Thinking about getting an Outremer 45 and have a few questions. What is your average speed over ground while making a passage? What kind of weight tolerances does your outremer have? Thanks!
This must be my fastest reaction ever, looking at the Durban skyline being advised not to cross the railroad 🤣
Our average speed on crossings is between 9 and 10 knots and the 2 45’s in our rally hardly go slower. The 45 is much lighter and has less payload than the 55, you should ask a 45 owner for the specifics. For instance Endless Joy, you can find them on Insta and there almost new boat is for sale as they ordered a 55 as well.
i know youtube doesn't oay that well whats that a 2.5 million dollar yatch?
Round the ends of the tape it stops it peeling
Yes we did that but apparently not enough. On the code 0 there’s also different material in a wave form along the edge where the Insignia doesn’t seem to stick on as good
Why did the Karver furlers fail??
Profurl nexus 6.5. In my opinion they fail because of a bad design
Thanks for your reply 👍What will you replace them with??@@CatGreatcircle
@geniexmay562 still discussing with Outremer their design office still thinks the Profurls are any good despite problems on several boats
Try a harken! Won’t do any worse..
@deepeddysf we love Harken (and Peter for that matter) but “won’t do any worse” is not what we’re looking for 😎
@klmKL890 noted
Mvg Steven
No worries Steven, it’s just that 95% of our viewers doesn’t understand Dutch and it makes sense to support a big majority like that even if we’re not a commercial channel. And we’re used to speak English the whole day anyway to our crew and the rest of the fleet (or even French unfortunately…).
