Over 40 years of teaching. That’s amazing! What an important role you’ve played in so many lives. Congratulations on such a long and important career and wish you a happy retirement! I loved Nancy Drew as well. Really looking forward to this channel! Welcome to booktube!
Welcome to the BookTube community, Pat! Glad you decided to join the party. No reason to be scared. You'll find that the majority of folks here are supportive. Best of luck with your channel - I look forward to watching more of your videos. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Welcome to the Booktube community, Pat! After working in television and advertising, I was a teacher, instructional coach, and now a Title 1 tutor (reading). I love Stephen King! ❤ I’m technologically challenged; however, I have learned a bunch since starting my channel. I always have a book with me, too. You just never know when you’ll be stuck waiting somewhere. Subscribed! 😊

Greg, thank you so much! I love your Monday night show, and last week, everyone was so encouraging when I said I was getting ready to start, so I thought it would be okay if I mentioned it last night. You have been so helpful. Thank you!
Hi Pat 🙋🏻♀️, Lovely introduction to UA-cam 😊. 40 years of teaching! Fantastic! Pat, I hope I am not stepping over a line, but I love the way you speak about Teaching ❤! I can still hear the passion & joy in sharing knowledge. Books are such a gift! It says so much that your students keep in touch. I taught for close to 22 years when illness caused me to leave. I miss it! I admire the diversity in your reading . I also remember going to the library & the record store 😅. Congratulations Pat! 🎉So glad you decided to start a channel.
Hi Kelly. Thank you for this lovely comment! So very kind of you, and no, you're not stepping over any lines! Thank you for telling me that you can hear my love of teaching in my videos. I have missed it a great deal, too. I probably could have stayed a few more years, but that's a story for another day. BookTube has actually helped me a great deal to cope with suddenly not teaching anymore. I'm very sorry that you had to leave teaching due to illness....
Congratulations on starting your channel! I have subscribed.I loved hearing about your teaching experience and shaping young lives. I had a third grade teacher who changed my life because she introduced me to some of my favorites still in the same year(The Secret Garden, Narnia, Summer of the Monkeys). I know that background will be beneficial!
I'm so excited to see more of your videos! My family was also a 'reader family' and it's been so fun to read alongside my parents and give book recommendations and talk about them
Thank you for this lovely comment, Ros. Getting involved here has been a godsend in many ways as I had been sort of at loose ends after teaching for almost 40 years and then suddenly not! Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊
Welcome to Book Tube and congratulations on retiring I truly hope you enjoy years to come. Reading books is a way to share lifetimes through infinite possibilities.... Then a movie shatters my mental health causing a mental breakdown. Hypersanity is having a mental breakthrough reaching new heights. Continue your passions.
Thanks to Kim @middleofthebookmarch, I’ve discovered your channel. I am excited to catch up, and because I’m kind of an*l about my habits, I’m starting at the beginning. 🥰 I was drawn in by “retired educator” as I, too, am retired from teaching. Only 24 years, but a great career, nonetheless.
Ah, another teacher! Wonderful! Welcome to my channel. I'm so glad that Kim sent you here. I hope you find some things of value here. Thanks for viewing and commenting!
Hi Pat! Your channel just popped up on my feed. I retired about nine months ago. I am a registered social worker by trade and retired after thirty-eight years! I have been resting a lot and books will become very significant in my retirement, too. I have been reading always and still have my first purchases from the Scholastic book catalogues from elementary school. I share many of the same genres that you enjoy. I am following your channel from Alberta, Canada. I have subscribed and look forward to your updates. I recently read a mystery by Shari Lepena titled Everyone Here is Lying. It was a quick read and you may enjoy it. Happy reading! 🇨🇦🌸📚
How wonderful to hear from you! Congratulations on your retirement! What a huge accomplishment! I hope you do get some rest and then, when you feel like it, see what else you might like to do with your new free time. Thank you so much for subscribing and for commenting. I’ll look forward to getting to know you better!
Welcome to booktube! I have so many fond memories of my English teachers from high school so looking forward to having your English teacher thoughts in future videos!
Welcome to BookTube, Pat and congratulations on your retirement from teaching. :) I’m sure you have inspired many students over your years of service as a teacher.:) I was an avid reader as a child and during my teenage years, but fell out of reading a bit in my 20s and 30s. Now that I’m in my 40s and my kids are a little older, I have rediscovered how much I love to read and how much fun it is being a part of this booktube community! I agree, everyone has been so kind and welcoming. I know what you mean about being a little overwhelmed with the tech aspect of making videos. I agree, I think you will learn a little bit as you go. I just use basic equipment like my cell phone, a tripod, a lapel microphone and a ring light I got off of Amazon. I do a little extra with my vlogs as photography is an other hobby of mine, but for regular videos, that’s all I use! For my editing, I just keep it simple on iMovie and to be honest, I really enjoy regular people making simple videos in their homes as opposed to heavily edited videos. For time management, I have found that batch filming a few videos in one sitting really helps so I have backup videos ready to go if I know I have a busy week ahead. I definitely struggle a little bit with watching booktube versus reading during my spare time, but I try to keep time limits on my viewing, so I don’t feel too burnt out! I am excited to hear you talk more about books as you begin your channel. I just started a reading project where I am trying to read the 100 greatest classic novels of all time and I am working my way through my first one (#100), which is Clarissa by Samuel Richardson. It’s a big one! 😂 I’m really enjoying it so far and since this is my first time reading classics (besides what I read in high school), I’m excited for all the wonderful novels ahead of me. I’m really glad I found your channel and I’m looking forward to getting to know you more on Booktube!
Thank you SO MUCH for this generous and detailed comment. Everything that you are saying is so helpful. I know I'll figure out a few basic things that I need as I go along, but I really feel quite inept! I have a former colleague who teaches a video/media class. I think I will reach out to her, too. I don't know how to edit or make thumbnails! I know what you mean about enjoying the videos of regular people in their homes. I do too. I LOVE your 100 Classics project! How wonderful! Thank you again for being so generous with your experiences! I'm looking forward to getting to know you too!
Hi, Pat! We're so glad you decided to start a channel. From an oldie content creator to a newbie, welcome aboard! Looking forward to hearing about your reading passions and getting the occasional recommendation in the coming year.
I don't have a channel, but relate to so much of what you shared! I retired from teaching music in 2020 after 36 years...4 years later am still trying to get used to all the free time. I too started with Bobbsey Twins and Hardy Boys, along with Boxcar Children. And I still read children's lit and YA. Another common area we share is limited tech expertise. At any rate, you seem like a lovely addition to the community. Thanks for being brave enough to do this!
Thank you for this lovely comment! Congratulations on your long career! I am sure that you touched many students' lives in that long time. I just finally decided to take the plunge here after watching book tubers for the past year. We'll see how it goes. Thanks again for watching and for commenting.
I love everything about this, this video, your answers, your delivery. I love that you try something new after retirement, keep learning new things, giving it a shot even though there are still things to figure out. What a role model and I’m so jealous of your students that have had you as a teacher. The fact that you read books intended for a younger audience to keep up with the younger people in your life says so much about your values. So often, kids are just kind of put to the side as if they have nothing to contribute to the conversation, so to enter their world to have common ground with them shows that you value their perspective and experience which is priceless for someone growing up. Or anyone really, but especially then. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that, but maybe this makes you feel seen in that respect as well. Which is just as important. New subscriber here, and fellow newbie, cheering you on!
Oh my goodness! What a lovely comment! You have no idea how important your words are to me right now. Thank you for this response! And welcome to you too! 🥰
Hi Pat! So happy to have found your channel and I’m looking forward to more of your content! I am recently retired (registered nurse) and like you, Booktube has become a wonderful part of my life. Good luck to you! 🍀
Hi Lisa! Congratulations on your retirement! I have deep respect for the nursing profession! Thank you for watching and commenting on my Newbie video! Looking forward to getting to know you better.
Happy to have found your channel! Some of my favorite and most memorable teachers when I was in high school and college, were English teachers, even though it was not my major. Welcome!🙏
Pat, good luck and congratulations on the launch of your BookTube channel! You mentioned "The Snowy Day' as the first book that you borrowed from the library with your mother. I loved reading that to my 2-year-old son countless times at bedtime. We can only imagine how reading books (or hearing them read aloud) can spur the imagination and excitement in young minds. I look forward to your Chats about books of various genres!
Don! Thank you so much for watching and for leaving this lovely comment! I love that you read The Snowy Day with Nick! It's such a treasure. Thank you again for subscribing and for watching and commenting!
Hi !!! Your video popped up on my you tube suggested videos and I'm so glad. I absolutely agree that reading, and talking about reading connects us. I learn so much about the world from reading. What a beautiful testament to your career that so many students still keep in touch. I look forward to catching up on your other videos !
Welcome Pat! Always wonderful to see new Booktubers taking the plunge. This is a wonderful community to be a part of. And it’s SO awesome you were an English teacher. That was the one subject in school I always excelled in. I originally majored in English in college, but then switched to Communications. So great you followed your passion. Look forward to your insights! All good questions. I’m still figuring out how to budget my time lol.
Welcome, Pat! My boyfriend is a teacher and he talks to his colleagues about what he's reading all the time. I'm looking forward to seeing your channel grow!
Welcome to Booktube! I've had a channel for almost 4 years and as far as budgeting time goes.....Try to have a set day or days for your videos to come out and plan around that. Set aside some time for filming, maybe an hour or two if you're doing reviews or in depth videos, half an hour for tags or TBRs. Editing is the longest process but I find it's helpful to spread that out over a couple of days and to do it in stages. I use a pretty basic editor (OpenShot) which takes a little bit of trial and error to learn but it's not too complicated. Technology is also a struggle for me😅so you are not alone there. I also read across a lot of genres! You really do have a kind teacher vibe, which I think is such a wonderful thing to bring to this corner of the internet 😁 Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Thank you for this lovely, helpful comment! I'm spending lots and lots of time planning and researching and preparing each video, which has been fun for me. Editing is still a mystery. I have a paid subscription to YouCut, and almost every time I go to upload a video, I get an error message and it won't upload. I also have Canva. What I need is a younger person (I'm in my mid-sixties) who really knows how to use these programs to sit with me and show me some basic editing skills. I've reached out to a younger colleague of mine, and she's offering to help when school gets out. She's a little overwhelmed right now. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your expertise! Much appreciated!
@@BookChatWithPat8668 Ahh I see. I hope she's able to help you out the editing! It's possible you're getting an error message because it's not recognizing the video file....don't quote me on that because that's not a program I've used but just a guess!
Welcome to Booktube Pat! It's great that you've gotten into Science-Fiction (hooray to Michael for hooking you in!). Great video, happy to have you join this community - looking forward to more :)
Great video. Nice to hear your former students keep in touch, says a lot about the impact you made 👍 UA-cam is definitely a major learning curve, lots of interesting adventures for sure.
Thank you! I have to say that the world of social media, for all of its pitfalls, has allowed me to keep in touch with students from throughout my career. That's been really wonderful. Oh, you're not kidding about a major learning curve! And yes, many interesting adventures--most of them very good and a few really shocking and disturbing. I wasn't entirely prepared.
I loved the Boxcar Children, and the Bobsey Twins, Nancy Drew, and the Hardy Boys. I also read The Happy Hollisters and Trixie Belden too. The Boxcar Children and Hardy Boys were probably my favorites.
We grew up with the same books, but adding the Little House books, too. For my 10th birthday my uncle gave me my first adult book, “Shogun”, and it was massive. I read it and that was the end of being willing to read kids books. 😋
Hi Pat, welcome to the party 😊. M-J sent me here, and after watching your newbie tag I had to subscribe. I love to see more 50+ booktubers, we're still a minority here, but I think we've something to tell. Also always great to see somebody with a professional background how to approach literature. Can't wait to watch your other videos. I'd be curious to hear you talk about German classics and to learn which ones are your favourite ones (and why). Best regards from Germany, - David
Thank you for watching my first effort and for leaving such a lovely comment. I subscribed to your channel as well on Saturday, I believe. I'm definitely still trying to find my way here, but I agree that it is good to have some older voices here as well. Thanks again for this comment.
@BookChatWithPat8668 Thanks a lot for the kind reply. I think one of the greatest advantages of booktube is that we ca find our very own and unique way, there's no need to stick to any predefined formats or style, - we can just do 'our own thing' here, - no need to fulfill anybodies expectations. It may take a bit of time, but people who love and appreciate your style will find you 😊. Best, - David
@@polyglotreading You are right, David. I'm a little rattled this morning by a couple of comments on one of my videos already. This is a whole new world to me--having my videos out there--and I think it will take some time for me to figure this all out. Thank you for being so kind.
Pat - I am caught up with all of your videos now! Which I have enjoyed tremendously! Thank you for the poetry! ☺️ Would you ever consider hosting a book read along and discussion specifically for your channel? I’ve just finished reading The Frozen River - I have many of your recommendations on hold. I am also a diverse reader and retired Educator - now a textile artist. Happy reading weekend Pat! ❤️🇳🇴📚
What a lovely comment! Thank you so much! You know, just this week, when I asked sort of offhandedly in one of my videos, if anyone wanted to read John Irving with me, a bunch of people said they would love to! That got me thinking that maybe I should try to organize some kind of read-along. I’m still so new at this world of BookTube, I still get totally overwhelmed by it. But, to answer your question, yes, I am just starting to consider doing something like that. A discussion to be continued, for sure. Thank you again for this lovely comment and for watching my videos. 🥰
@@BookChatWithPat8668 Sign me up Pat! It would be so lovely to read along and then log on for an in depth discussion! You’re doing wonderfully! It’s about you, the books and your insight! Which is so fresh, intelligent, and insightful. Very relatable and enjoyable. Keep it simple! Your content is rich and inspiring! Always something wonderful to look forward to! 😊📚After your Ray Bradbury poem - I was so inspired to dig more into the deeper meaning of that poem. So much to ponder still!
@p4chennorway well, thank you for the encouragement! Will keep you posted. I hope you were able to find Bradbury reading his poem at that symposium. I think I posted it some months ago in a community post. It moves me to tears. By the way, I’m Patricia Ann too, but with no “e” at the end. 😊
Hi Pat I think I just became subscriber no 27. I feel pretty sure your content is going to be good with all your teaching and reading experience behind you
Hi Pat. It was great getting to know you through this tag. I'm curious about your experience with poetry, both in the classroom and as an independent reader.
Thanks for the lovely comment! I'd love to talk poetry with you! My second video was a Poetry Thursday video on Ross Gay. I think Poetry Thursday used to be a thing here, so I figured maybe I could do a couple and see if there is any interest. As an English teacher, I incorporated poetry into all of my classes. For the last 11 or 12 years of my career, I also taught AP English Lit, and so teaching poetry was a really important part of that class. I also ran a literary magazine for about 25 years of my career, and a big part of that was encouraging kids to write poetry...and to read their poetry at events. Additionally, I used to take kids to the Dodge Poetry Festival every other year where they offered a special students' day. I can tell you more about my personal favorite poets in another communication. You are a poet? I'd love to hear about that.
It sounds like you gave your students a wonderful experience with poetry. How wonderful that you had access to the Dodge Poetry Festival! I have The Language of Life book by Bill Moyers based on a program about the Dodge Poetry Festival. I'll read a few poems from it later this year. I'm more a poetry reader than a poetry writer. @@BookChatWithPat8668
When I first started taking kids to the Dodge Festival, they only allowed us to bring six kids. By the time I retired, they allowed us to bring 24 kids and three chaperones. It was an incredible experience for kids to spend a day hearing living poets. They could also buy books and get them signed. It was an incredible experience for everyone. Dodge always devotes Friday of the Festival to high school students. Very cool indeed.
Kudos to you for being bold and brave and jumping in - very inspiring! Love the idea of a graphic novel course - that must have been really cool. What are you listening to?
Really enjoyed getting to know you with this video Pat! Since you’re enjoying sci-fi and YA, I wonder if you’ve read the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman?
@@BookChatWithPat8668 ok great! I think you would like it. It’s very unique and thought provoking. I just recently finished the trilogy, and it’s definitely a favorite.
Welcome to booktube. I have a mystery reading question. I have heard that people will read the ending first to then go and read from the start to see of they can pick up the clues along the way as to who did it. Do you do this?
Fabulous Newbie Tag - welcome to BookTube - great you're getting into SF, it must be exciting venturing into a whole new field.

Welcome!🙏
Aww. Thank you so much! That’s very kind of you to say. 😊
Thank you so much for this lovely comment!
Thank you so much for watching. I’m sure you were a great student of English! 😊

Hi Pat. Welcome and thank you for joining. English teachers are the best
Thank you, James! I'm happy to be here. I'm really enjoying your channel. Thanks for the welcome!
Thank you, Fred! You are such a treasure. You subscribed before I even had a channel. Thank you, my friend! 😊

Welcome to booktube, Pat! 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!
I just started myself but would still like to welcome you. I hope this gives you the fulfillment you're looking for.
Thank you so much! I hope you’re having a good time developing your channel too!
Hi Pat, another of the “Class of ‘24” here, best of luck with the channel!
Thank you! Best of luck to you, too. Your videos are awesome!
Welcome!! 📚❤️
Thank you so much!
I loved all of those children's series! Thanks for commenting!
Welcome to BookTube!! I love how much you love books and have helped so many kids love books, too. I look forward to more of your videos!
Thank you for this very kind comment!
We grew up with the same books, but adding the Little House books, too. For my 10th birthday my uncle gave me my first adult book, “Shogun”, and it was massive. I read it and that was the end of being willing to read kids books. 😋
Wow! Shogun at age 10! Very impressive!
Hi. Excited to subscribe to another reader’s Booktube channel. Looking forward to the discussions. 👍🎉

Thank you so much!
Hello 👋🏻
I am eager to see what you have in store for us.
Thank you so much for your comment! Hope I don't disappoint!
Given that the tide in schools (at least here in the South) has been against arts education, that's a huge victory.@@BookChatWithPat8668
I guess it was.
Kudos to you for being bold and brave and jumping in - very inspiring! Love the idea of a graphic novel course - that must have been really cool. What are you listening to?
It was a great class. I’m not sure if it’s running now though. Entirely new English Dept. these days….
Really enjoyed getting to know you with this video Pat! Since you’re enjoying sci-fi and YA, I wonder if you’ve read the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman?
Hi Chas. Thank you! No, I haven’t, but I’m always looking for new recommendations! I’ll add the Scythe series to my list!
@@BookChatWithPat8668 ok great! I think you would like it. It’s very unique and thought provoking. I just recently finished the trilogy, and it’s definitely a favorite.
@BookishChas then I will definitely read it! Thanks, Chas!

Welcome to booktube. I have a mystery reading question. I have heard that people will read the ending first to then go and read from the start to see of they can pick up the clues along the way as to who did it. Do you do this?
Hi Montie! I don’t read the endings first in mysteries or any other type of book. Do you? Thanks for the welcome! 😊
