Usually in those big lawsuits where the companies pay out to a big group of people it’s like a sign up and the higher up you are in the lawsuit the bigger percent you’ll get. I always sign up for these big suits and usually will get a check for anywhere from $3.46 to $9 years later lol

Love the pod! I wanted to comment- I’ve had a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) that randomly happened a few years ago. So it’s important to keep an eye on my blood oxygen level to make sure that it’s at normal levels. I realize that most people don’t need to worry about that issue but I wanted to post it because I know that there are others like me.

Dod they say the sensors are wrong? The Apple watch is just as accurate as Polar H10, which is the standard for Heart Rate. Now the SpO2 is a different story. Oh, Dr Mike is not an expert on medical tech.

Great coverage on the Google law suite. Have a few points here though, & would love to hear about each of your views in the future…
    1) with all the impacts of this case on Google, companies like Samsung will eventually roll out features like 20% commission on their play store. How do you see Google reacting to that market behavior
    2) you are discounting what this has opened up. Now, countries like India are prioritising Indian developers & content. Companies like Paytm & PhonePe are building app stores in collaboration with the startup community to prioritise Indian products & services, even in categories like social media. The point here being, apart from growing the community, this would also ensure a fair share of Indian money comes back to the community, than seeing a big chunk go to an international tech giant, which may be tricky to cover via direct taxes. Your views?

I have a famuly member with health issues that bought a Series 8 or 9 apple watch specifically because the blood oxygen monitoring, its not 100% but it's honestly really good for what it is, and has hrlp them greatly with monitoring their condition. If apple just disabled that feature, it defeats a large reason why they bought the watch.
Should apple disable the feature, they need to either give people the option to get a refund, or some sort of credit.

You are underestimating the importance of the blood oxygen sensor because you have no personal use for it. However, as someone who had lung clots a few years ago, it’s one of the reasons I bought and wear an Apple Watch today as I have to monitor my oxygen levels constantly. It’s too inconvenient to carry a monitor in my pocket. I know at least three other people with health related issues who use that feature on the watch heavily. If Apple were to discontinue the feature after I purposely bought the watch for it, I would expect a refund from my watch and I would switch to something else that offers it.

@@glittery_ponies2035 it’s not about competing with a medical instrument. Sometimes all you need is to know if your levels are going up or down before going to whatever meter you may have. Having it on the watch helps prevent you from having to carry around a meter in your pocket all the time. it doesn’t replace a medical meter, but it does add convenience and yes again, some people buy the watch for that reason.

i'm not the tech expert, or a lawyer, or anything, but... Apple makes their own hardware and software, so it's their proprietary product/platform as a whole. it was like that since forewer. people who buy apple products know what they sign for. and developers never developed apps to sell outside of appstore. so they can do whatever... google , on the other hand, is not. that's the first reason. second reason is that android kinda always was and kinda "advertised" itself as an "open" platform... but, in fact, in recent years especially, it's not so anymore. when i try to install something that is not an google store from apk file i get an error. that's defeat the whole purpose of an open system. so if a developer developes an app for android, and it's simply aren't compatible to your phone because it's not on play market - it's gating.

@@davixpixie243 Not exactly what I was saying. Google wasn't competing as much as they were making an uneven playing field. Apple takes a 30% cut, period. This allows big apps and small apps to pay the same "apple tax" and reach the same demographics. Google on the other hand claims to have a 30% cut across the board but unfairly discounts some applications. That isn't exactly encouraging competition since some applications have an implicit advantage. Hence why Google lost their lawsuit and Apple didn't

It may not be medically accurate but the oxygen sensor is good for people with COPD to casually keep an eye on trends and I hope Apple does not see it as a throw away feature, like these guys suggested. I think it is important not only to them but athletes and rock climbers among other people for use. It will not replace a medically accurate fingertip sensor when one needs very accurate measurements but is indispensable for understanding trends and tracking generally well being so Apple, if you are listening, please do not listen to these guys. You must do whatever it takes to keep the oxygen sensor

This google lawsuit seems reasonable, though I wonder how it will affect security. My bigger question is, isn't Apple even more anticompetative in terms of sideloading and app store pricing?

    • @tedzards509

Probably Apple is lobbying hard by claiming that the consequences are not implementable on their system and "security issues"™. As they just outright disallow anything not Apple instead of having deals its a different enough situation?

Yes they are, but because the app store is only on apple phones they don't consider it as a platform. Which means it won't be judged like the g app was judged.

As an anemic person, the blood oxygen sensor on fitbit is what helped clue my doctor into ordering me an iron infusion. I was exhausted and barely functional for the 2 months leading up to the infusion. Most people may not benefit from the health features, but for people with known conditions, it can help a lot.

You guys mentioned that you’re not sure why the temp sensor feature exists. From what I’ve read that actually has been revolutionary feature for a lot of women when it comes to cycle tracking especially since the Natural Cycles app for example got FDA (and European) approval recently to integrate with it. Meaning it can now act as an approved method of contraception and fertility tracking as well.

If Apple did the software method they’d likely create a different sku exclusively in software and watchOS just sends a version of watchOS without the blood oxygen app to users, sort of like how the iPhone XS Max has a device sku exclusively for china(fun fact about this sku: iOS 16.4 can be downgraded on this sku but not the global sku).
They have no reason to remove it from existing customers and that could lead to legal problems if they removed an advertised feature even if people didn’t use it, similar to the Other OS feature on the PS3 which the class action won.

Ok my theory for the Pixel 8 pro temperature sensor is that they at first intended to add a LiDar sensor but something happened, either they couldn't find a supplier or they ran into patent issues or maybe they just couldn't find a way to integrate it into Google Apps but they already had the Pixel 8 pro housings made with the hole on them and just had to find something to fill it with which could explain why the thermometer app seems like they made it during a lunch break.

To play the devils (googles) advocate, they do provide their proprietary operating system, so I think expecting to have their services used as a form of payment makes sense (also why the crack down on the store while the play services will keep existing). Now that they wont be allowed to do that, theyll likely have to find another way to profit off of developing Android.
If any company is not okay with having to pay the price, they can use the AOSP and wont have to ask for permission to load their store.

It did feel a little hard when the same rules don't apply at all to other store fronts like for apple....
I mean, android is 100% open source(aosp). Any OEM can do it without the play store. I don't like google too much but apple is at like 88% of young users in the US and they get to keep their monopoly intact?

You already have a very capable robot... a car. Tesla will have the car position itself over the charging pad then either the car will lower or the pad will most likely raise itself for that optimal wireless charging.
The Roomba has been self charging for over a decade and this method is perfect. If a car can parallel-park itself then it can pull up forward to a charging port, exposing contact pads from the "bumper" using IR sensors to guide itself in like the Roomba.
Think about it... since the 60's we have been pumping combustible liquid through a rod at 35,000 ft while traveling at 375 mph.

    Installer rights to preloaded apps
If you opened up the pre-installed Samsung Appstore app for the first time, you would be directed to the settings to allow it to install apps before it could actually do that.
So they are just saying when you get the phone, Samsung will be able to have the Samsung Appstore on your device with that setting already toggled on.

What if Apple spends 2 billion to fix this issue? Won't touch apple 🍎. Apple will collect all these costs in next iPhone series from their zombie costumers. I am well sure all money they lose will get top up with iPhone 16 series prices. Regardless of iPhone prices Apples zombie costumers will line up and empty their credit card in the store 😅😅😅 wait and see iPhone 16 prices 😅😅 and if you own any of those watch if Apple stop letting you use that sensor then you can also sue Apple because you have paid for that future.
