I remember this game and still believe that the first red card was doubtful, the second one was unnecessary, and the penalty was made up. Argentina’s tactics that night were predictable. From the start they were always going to play negative and hope for penalties. It had gotten them to the final. Caniggia was a massive loss. That and also the fact Maradona was not fully fit.

As a German, admittedly I am biased, that being said: I think of myself as a sporting person and aside from winning always look at the way the victory (or loss) came to be. I must say that this was the day when I lost (most) of my admiration for the Argentinian team. They gave me even more reason in the 2006 quarterfinal in Germany when they caused an outright brawl after loosing in penalty kicks against Germany. But the (to date) lowest point was during the 2014 final in Brazil when they all but slaughtered Schweinsteiger who was bleeding from his face, was purposefully fouled numerous times and I believe never recovered from the beating he took that day. Argentina has produced some of the finest players over the decades, they do not have to play dirty and an important quality of a true champion is to keep one's cool in the face of adversity.

However why would Sensini dive in like that when the Voeller is heading away from goal? And, you've already escaped one legitimate pen call just minutes earlier. Just usher him to the byline. The red card was right, Monzon disregarded completely the ball and his tackle could have been very harmful.
If Klinsmann hadn't jumped he could have been severely injured.

As a German, admittedly I am biased, that being said: I think of myself as a sporting person and aside from winning always look at the way the victory (or loss) came to be. I must say that this was the day when I lost (most) of my admiration for the Argentinian team.
They gave me even more reason in the 2006 quarterfinal in Germany when they caused an outright brawl after loosing in penalty kicks against Germany. But the (to date) lowest point was during the 2014 final in Brazil when they all but slaughtered Schweinsteiger who was bleeding from his face, was purposefully fouled numerous times and I believe never recovered from the beating he took that day. Argentina has produced some of the finest players over the decades, they do not have to play dirty and an important quality of a true champion is to keep one's cool in the face of adversity.
