      I was born in Bos en Lommer and live now in the MB. Lived in de Kinkerbuurt for 2 years but back in MB since 1999. But those neighborhoods are ok with me. Of course it would be fun to have so much money that I can afford to live on the Prins Hendrik laan.

    I am glad you like Amsterdam. I was born and raised here. Worked in de pijp between 1972 and 1976. There was a lot of small industry back than. I worked in a printers office. On the second floor above the printers office lived "aunt Miep". No posh 'R' to hear back than. Just plain old Amsterdam dialect and Amsterdam humor.

    Whats important to consider is of course that De Pijp is in Dutch also a synonym for a bj. The local culture embraces this and the local newspaper is simply called De Pijp Krant, which litterally translates as the bj paper. Originally the area was called after a pipe because people would flow through the area's main roads to the city centre like smoke. Had to look that one up thought, nobody knows that.

    • @dr0pa
      @dr0pa Місяць тому +1

      You are talking shit, you mean “pijpen” that’s a BJ but de pijp means “the pipe” (flow pipe) they did give this name to the place because allot of people used this place/streets for transport to the city center.

    Please go live somewhere else then Amsterdam. The large influx of expats has drastically changed this city. Housing prices have exploded for locals (teachers and policemen can't afford anymore to live there, expats get a tax break the teachers don't get), the participation to the community has reduced (less volunteers at sports and HOAs, low commitment to learning Dutch, more car focused).
    I am a volunteer at a sports club. There expats bring there kids, but they help considerably less with volunteering. In out apartment complex are a lot of expats. They never volunteered to be part of the HOA board. We need to talk English in a lot of locations in the city. At our local school expats bring more often there kids by car increasing the dangers to the other kids coming by bike.

      If you watch my other content you'll see I just bought a home here, so we are here long term :) I acknowledge your perspective, but I encourage you to read more before spreading unwarranted hate like this. I did not get the tax ruling, but it would have been nice, given I have to divide my life savings by 20 to live here (euro vs. rand). If you wish to have an open mind to new information, you can refer to this article (one of many): www.dutchnews.nl/2024/03/stop-inciting-foreigner-hatred-un-housing-rapporteur/. My husband attended a buurt discussion last week and it was the Dutchies who were upset over the reduction of parking bays. As for volunteering, I can't comment, as I am not involved in any programs that require volunteer work. Sorry about your frustrations, but I love this city, I respect this city, and I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to make it my home.

      The city smells like this, because people like you come by car to the city.

De pijp is one of the more expensive areas in Amsterdam supposedly, so I don't know why you're saying I couldn't afford to live elsewhere? We CHOSE De Pijp by recommendation of a Dutch rental agency who guided us on where to look based on our age group and lifestyle. Also, I don't think this makes a difference to your comment, but I'm not an expat I guess. I am here for the long term. Not just a fleeting 3 years. The Netherlands is our home 😊

      @@michelle_kahn Be aware people living outside Amsterdam will try to convince you their place/city is much much better, They don't like it when expats/tourists go to Amsterdam and ignore them thus to get attention they resort to trolling. And in general love to show their dislike for everything in Amsterdam you will hear leftish / woke / arrogant / full of drugs and prostitution a lot when they describe Amsterdam. But you never will convince them it's just jalousy... That there are expensive things in the pijp is true, but prices in supermarkets are the same everywhere in and out of Amsterdam. They also have a problem with the tax cuts given to skilled foreigners that come to work here, i guess you are one of them ;-) And some people living or those that want to move there frown a bit on those tax cuts too. As it is indeed caused an increase in housing rentals and they can't afford it anymore. You know the usual in cities with mass tourism and large expat communities. have fun there born and raised here in Amsterdam. One other thing for the love of god don't ever mention Trump if you want to be liked by the majority of the locals they in general have a strong dislike for him.
