Aishwarya is not just beauty but she has proven how amazing she is for acting and portraying her own touch when dancing. She is what attracted me to bollywood back in early highschool in 2012. By far, my favorite bollywood actresses!
Aishwarya has been trained in Indian Classical dance (Bharatanatyam) and Madhuri Dixit has been trained in another classical dance form (Kathak). That's why Aishwarya Rai is an amazing dancer because she has the base of a classical dance.. it's like learning the ballet in the west. And this particular song has Kathak dance style which the courtesans in the North used to do which is why it reminds you of Madhuri in Devdas . And this song has been choreographed by the Maestro of Kathak, Pandit Birju Maharaj, who's also whom Madhuri Dixit learned from.

After Madhuri Dixit, I would say Aishwarya Rai is a great dancer and she has also trained in classical forms of dance. Madhuri is a trained KATHAK dancer. Aishwarya is a far better dancer than she is an actress. I just feel she comes alive when she dances and Aishwarya is so graceful and elegant when she dances. I can watch her dance all day! 😍

This classic style of Mujra dancing is a mixture of different dances mainy kathak. During the time this Urdu novel is set mujra was a big thing in india and Pakistan (then india). Especially during the time when the mughals ruled. This novel focuses on the muslims during that time.
btw,she never had sex with a client ;) She fell in love with her first client-a rich guy,played by her now hubby Adhishek Bachchan.The end was very sad-she was accused wrongly by him that she slept with other clients(kind of hillarious,having in mind that was her job ;) ),especially with one guy(who lied to him afterwords ,"proving" he slept with her,telling him about a birth mark in her private parts,as he saw her naked,but he never had her-as she was extremely unwilling).So Abhishek's character pushed her away because he thought she was unfaithful to him.And she was rejected also by her original family,from wich she was stolen,when they learned she was a courtesan(even though she never slept with otherone than Abhishek's hero).So at the end she withraw from everything,living in sadness and rejection.

Aishwarya Rai is an excellent and expert danseuse. No reason to see her performance as of any lower level. Well she comes much later than Ms. Madhuri Dixit and perhaps as a next generation to Madam Rekha ji. In that sense she is less experienced. Otherwise she is perhaps the last Bolly actress to present such classical and authentic dance number.
... according to the book by Mirza Ruswa, she first performed quite late for her profession - at the age of 15, and the kotha (courtesans' home) madam didn't have plans to promote her... after her bold and successful performance - she, even not a beginner, was performing after a famous Delhi courtesan - Umrao got her own room, the servants and some space to perform.

Yes, this is a pleasant enough song, and Aishwarya Rai is on point as a dancer, but it does seem a bit flat. If I may make a suggestion? This is a bit left of field, but Sridevi in the film Khuda Gawah acts her socks off. It's set in Afghanistan, and is full tilt Orientalist: Sridevi's character is this fantastical mix of Princess Jasmine and Xena Warrior Princess, and Amitabh Bachchan (whom she plays opposite) is quite dashing on horseback with his scimitar. The language, too, has this great Shakespearean quality to it. The first half of the film is excellent, the second half very much not, but I urge you to watch it nonetheless. The opening scene recalls something of 'Lawrence of Arabia', and the moment Amitabh first meets Sridevi is brilliant. Though I personally am fond of the scene in which Amitabh takes his leave of Sridevi to start his quest to win her hand: he asks her for a smile and, imperious though she tries to act, cannot help but relent. I defy anyone to resist melting in that moment, too! Please check out the songs Main Aisi Cheez Nahin, and Tu Mujhe Qabool.

all the songs from umroa jaan are beautiful..they really are..and aish really shines in each one.. Bollywood cinema is against (its gotten a bit more loose over the past few years) any actual intimate scenes,from sex scenes, right down to a peck on the lips..so i feel thats what the songs through the films are,rather than packing it with steamy sex and inuendo,they have the two forlorn lovers showcase their love in a more appropriate way...So basically when your watching songs in hindi films, your watching a sex scene..And personally i think i like it so much better..funny tho,i dont like MUSICAL films..weird much?

This was a poor remake of the original 80s movie starring Rekha in the leading role. That movie is a cult classic of Indian cinema. And that’s why this remake did not do well. Just imagine comparing the original Gone with the Wind with the tv series that they remade with Timothy Dalton. Cult classics should be left alone.
well I watched first the Ash's version.And she is my all time fab of course.So the Rekha's older version was unwatchable for me after that.Sorry.Something like Raavanan and Raavan.After watching the Tamil version with Vikram,the Hindi one was ... nope. 😎 BTW,Rekha herself praised high Ash'es Umrao Jaan.They both respect and love each other dearly,praising each other every time they have opportunity.There is a video of Rekhaji telling the story how she met this stunning girl with moonface (Ash) on the street,hugged her and told her she will be a big star soon ;) Nowadays they are really close friends.You know also the father in law of Ash,Amitabh Bachchan ,was the big love of Rekha (he was married already,unfortunately)..
just my 2 cents to the conversation. I think in their aim to differ from the original, the team took the story in a direction that doesn't sit well with the original. where Rekha's Umrao was bashful, innocent and bright eyed, Aishwarya's Umrao feels a little more aware, saucy and in control. Even the romance in the story, Rekha's version had pain but Aishwarya's version had angst. That's why those who know the original, do not favour the new one. Conceptually speaking, some of the moves Aishwarya did, would have been frowned upon because it was too 'modern' I would say. But at the end of the day, they are both derived from the same book but took a slightly different approach to the characters. My preference of course is the older version but I can see why some people like the newer version. I'd recommend 3 songs to complete the Umrao Jaan experience 1. Jhoote Ilzam - New Umrao Jaan 2. In Ankhon ki Masti - Old Umrao Jaan 3. Dil Cheez Kya Hai - Old Umrao Jaan Exactly in this order. So that you don't have a disconnect 😊
